The scourge of Mesothelioma is one that we’ve never found an answer to. Associated with asbestos exposure, the question these days is whether it is still a risk given the large amount of litigation and partial asbestos ban that have been in place since the late 1980s? The answer might surprise you.
Mesothelioma is one of the odder cancers you will find. It gets its name from the organic geography where it can be found. The internal organs in your chest area must move to function. This can cause friction, heat and trauma. To keep it from happening, the body has a material known as mesothelium. It is a two layer sheet that surrounds the organs and lines the chest and abdomen. The layers have a lubricant between them, which creates a moveable surface so the heart can beat, the lungs fill, and so on without any problems. Mesothelioma is the cancer of this lining. Colon cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in the colon and the formation of tumors from these cells. Despite the presence of polyps in the human large intestine, presentation of colon cancer symptoms at an early stage is very low. In some cases, it may not even manifest symptoms. Today, colon cancer is the second leading malignancy in the United States and the fourth worldwide. The combination of these facts gives rise to the importance of colon screening methods aimed at determining early stages of colon cancer.
There are a number of screening methods available for colon cancer detection. These tests are done alone or in combination with other tests in order to distinguish colon cancer from other intestinal diseases. Hereunder is a list of these screening and detection procedures. Leukemia literally means ‘many white cells in the blood’. The white cells are part of the body’s immune system, and there are several sub-groups of white cells that have different sorts of roles in recognizing and dealing with ‘invaders’ such as bacteria and viruses as well as other types of foreign protein. All of the blood cells originate in the bone marrow and leukaemia which is also known as blood cancer is a disease where the bone marrow produces large numbers of abnormal white cells. This means that the normal marrow is pushed into smaller and smaller areas. This results in fewer normal cells being produced and gives rise to some of the symptoms. It is possible to have chronic leukemia for months or even years without knowing it. The symptoms are varied, but many people notice different symptoms like tiredness, bruising easily (often without having had any blow or fall), repeated infections, enlarged lymph glands, weight loss, night sweats, fever. These are most common symptoms appear when patient suffers from chronic leukemia. Chronic leukemia is a slowly progressive form of leukemia and tends to involve more mature cell types. It may not need treatment immediately, but if treatment is required it is usually chemotherapy, given in the form of tablets. The cause of leukemia is not known. Older people with early stage CLL have a normal life expectancy. Continue reading ‘Chronic Leukemia Surgery – Manage it in India’ »

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women in the US. According to the American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates, there were over 108,000 cases of colon cancer and almost 41,000 cases of rectal cancer in 2009, causing almost 50,000 deaths.
Overall, the lifetime risk for developing colorectal cancer is about 5.3% or 1 in 19. Men are slightly more likely to have it than women.
According to a study from the December 2009 issue of International Journal of Cancer, if you want to reduce your risk of colon cancer you need to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables and drink more tea and red wine. The authors followed a group of 120,852 men and women who were 55-69 years old at the beginning of the study. Every participant filled out detailed dietary questionnaires, indicating how much of different types of foods and beverages they consumed. The reason for the study was to see if there was a link between diet and cancer and also whether certain types of food could reduce cancer risk. Bowel cancer symptoms include a wide range of undesirable signs, some of them include frequent and regular abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. If these things are left untended one may even go as far as to experience bleeding in the anal orifice or hints of blood in the stool. Feelings of pain while defecating should also be given attention to as it can also be a sign of a developing tumor.
Bowel cancer, also known by its other two names, colorectal cancer and colon cancer, describes cancerous growths that stem from the colon, rectum and appendix. Most cases begin with adenomatous polyps found in the colon. Although these mushroom-like growths are usually benign, they can sometimes develop into cancer if they’re left unchecked. In Stage III prostate cancer, the cancer has spread beyond the prostate gland. It is now affecting nearby tissues but has not reached the bladder, lymph nodes, rectum, or other organs and structures of the body. Surgery and radiation therapy can be an option for Stage III prostate cancer, depending on the case; however, normally they are less likely to work at this stage.
Possible Treatment Options
Radiation therapy or surgery may not be an option at this stage of the cancer; it depends on the patient and that particular case of cancer for the doctors to decide. They still could be possibilities in some cases. In others, a combination of different treatment options could be prescribed. Below is a list of possible treatment options for Stage III cancer of the prostate.
• External radiation therapy (XRT) in combination with Hormone therapy
• Hormone therapy by itself
• Radical Prostatectomy
• Watchful waiting
Watchful waiting will normally be used in patients who are 70 years old and older. This type of usually grows at a slow pace, so in older patients many doctors may prefer to use this technique to see what the cancer is going to do and whether treatment is even necessary. Most of the time, we worry about curing a disease after it has been diagnosed rather than having taken active steps to prevent it. It’s not too hard on your health if this approach is taken on minor illnesses, but if you are afflicted by life threatening diseases like cancer, the treatment itself takes such a toll on your health as much as the disease itself.
It makes much sense to take positive steps towards prevention of diseases rather than just cure them. Especially with breast cancer, most women start thinking about the disease only after they have developed it. Once you develop it, the treatment process is painful and long drawn out, not to mention the severe emotional impact. The good news though, is that it is possible to lower the risk of breast cancer by following a healthy lifestyle.
The benefits of exercise have been talked about time and again and not without reason. Exercise remains the best method to prevent almost all diseases. A healthy body is highly resistant to any illness that attempts to take over. Consistent physical activity, even if it is moderate, significantly reduces the risk of breast cancer in a woman. Routine tests like pap smears and mammograms are important, but don’t rely on tests alone to protect you from cancer. It’s just as important to listen to your body and notice anything that’s different, odd, or unexplainable. You don’t want to join the ranks of cancer patients who realize too late that symptoms they’d noticed for a long time could have sounded the alarm earlier, when cancer was easier to cure.
1. Wheezing or shortness of breath One of the first signs lung cancer patients remember noticing when they look back is the inability to catch their breath. “I couldn’t even walk across the yard without wheezing; I thought I had asthma, but how come I didn’t have it before?” is how one woman described it.
2. Chronic cough or chest pain Several types of cancer, including leukemia and lung tumors, can cause symptoms that mimic a bad cough or bronchitis. One way to tell the difference: The problems persist, or go away and come back again in a repeating cycle. Some lung cancer patients report chest pain that extends up into the shoulder or down the arm. Continue reading ‘For Women Only – Cancer Symptoms You're Most Likely to Ignore’ »
