One of the many side effects of chemotherapy is that it weakens your immune system which is our repair system that keeps us health. So your main focus when undergoing chemotherapy should be to support the immune system by making some changes, especially with your food choices. There isn’t a drug or a pill that will strengthen this system but only naturally way to achieve that.

One of the many advantages of looking after the immune system during chemotherapy is there will be fewer consequences from the many side effects this treatment has. Also since all cancers are first caused by an immune system that wasn’t functioning properly and allowed cancer cells to develop, doesn’t it make sense to learn about it and what you can do to assist it?

Firstly avoid doing anything that further weakens the immune system so cut down on alcohol, give up smoking which includes avoiding passive smoke, eat less dietary fats that are in fatty meats and butter, cheese and cream. Don’t use chemicals such as fly sprays, hair dyes and personal care products, especially under arm antiperspirants. All these are damaging to the immune system. Cancer can be triggered by many different influences, including penetrating radiation such as X rays, neutrons, and alpha-beta-gamma rays emitted by radioactive substances. Biological effects of radiation have been studied for nearly one hundred years. The first such effect, but not cancer, was observed on Pierre Curie, husband of Marie Curie. After carrying a strong radioactive source in his watch pocket he noticed a red spot on his skin, below the source.

The probability of cancer depends on the dose of radiation received. The purpose of this article is to describe effects associated with different doses. The unit of dose is Sievert (Sv). It is defined in terms of energy deposited in a body by penetrating radiation. As a nuclear physicist, I was often exposed to penetrating radiation. Each time I carried a small dosimeter of one kind or another. Smaller doses are expressed in millisieverts (mSv). The old unit of dose, rem, is still widely used by doctors (1Sv=100 rem). We have within us, the seed of who we might be and that can only grow through the nurture of knowledge. At time of terrific threat, we see life with great clarity. In that instant our life passes before us, and all the regrets, hopes and yearnings, that form our personality, present themselves for inspection. Our future is, in that moment, a possibility or an impossibility, depending on the decision that implants itself, right then, as a seed in our mind. The decision we took in that moment, has brought us to this place. The decisions we take now, will set the course of our future direction. Now is the moment of power in our life and knowledge is the fuel.

The various cures for cancer

The more we dig in this field of cancer, the more “cures” we find. I once asked an oncologist why he had not informed us of a particular protocol. “There are too many,” he said without looking up from his notes “if you wish to follow this or that fad, then do so, but I will only offer tried and tested regimes, within the medical framework.” At the time, I was discouraged by his disparaging use of the word “fad” and it was much later, in searching for our particular “cure”, that I slowly came to the understanding that his world and ours, were not too far apart, but it took me a long time to come to such conclusion. Not that I agree with chemotherapy in all cases, nor do I necessarily agree with the medical protocols chosen at the expense of a gentler, natural approach, nor even that an exclusive natural approach should be followed at all cost. Research has shown in some cases that a natural, nutritional approach is no less successful than some chemotherapeutics. Why then would a learned doctor choose a regimen that is guaranteed to make the patient ill, when other natural options are available? Continue reading ‘Cancer Management – Greatness Is Within Us’ »

Chemotherapy and radiation treatment often times leave cancer patients with side-effects that severely impact various aspects of their quality of life. In this post, we’ll touch upon some of the dietary, physical and social options available to battle the side-effects induced by chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatment.

Dietary Side Effects

Loss in appetite is a common side-effect experienced by patients who undergo chemotherapy. This loss in appetite results in a decreased protein and nutrient intake making the patient’s road to recovery more difficult. According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer patients complain that certain foods like meat may be bitter or taste metallic. A patient’s sense of smell may also be affected due to chemo treatment attacking healthy cells as well as diseased cells. Usually, these changes in sense of taste or smell will return to normal once treatment ends. Continue reading ‘Options to Battle the Side Effects of Chemotherapy Cancer Treatment’ »
