People use mouthwash to reduce tendencies of bad breath. Moreover, mouthwash has some properties which kill known bacteria residing in the mouth. It is one effective way to rinse the mouth and therefore, it promotes good oral hygiene. Twenty five percent of the Americans have halitosis, a chronic bad breath. About seventy percent suffers from periodontal disease which includes periodontitis and gingivitis. Therefore majority of the population found the release of mouthwash in the market very helpful. Aside from the mouthwash’s chief task to cleanse the mouth off any accumulating bacteria, it helps with their social activities. There are times bad breath tends to stop people from talking to others. But with the help of mouthwash, people tend to be more confident while interacting with others.

Mouthwash ingredients include thymol, eucalyptol, hexetidine, methyl salicylate, menthol, chlorhexedine gluconate, benzalkolnium chloride, cetylpyridinium chloride, methylparaben, hydrogen peroxide, domiphen bromide, fluoride, enzymes and calcium. There are also water sweeteners such as sorbitol, sucralose, sodium saccharine and xylitol. Some mouthwash has alcohol which takes up to 27% vol. The alcohol content gives an antibacterial effect. According to research, alcohol causes mouth to be dry. It also aggravates the condition of chronic bad breath. It decreases saliva, which naturally makes breath fresh.

A researcher from the Dental Journal of Australia published a report linking mouthwash to oral cancer. It concludes that there is enough proof that alcohol-based mouthwash increases the chance of having an oral cancer. Alcohol based mouthwash has acetaldehyde as its by-product. As Acetaldehyde is produced, it builds up in the oral cavity. The researcher believes it is carcinogenic, thus causing cancer.

However, some dental experts are still firm on their contention that mouthwash reduces mouth infection as it kills bacteria residing in the mouth. That until now, there is no extensive report released evidencing mouthwash as a cause of oral cancer.

Oral cancer happens when a cancerous tissue grows in the oral cavity. Oftentimes, oral cancer is commonly found on the tissues of the lips and the tongue although it may also happen in the floor of the mouth, lining of the cheek, gums and palate.

In 2008, around thirty four thousand Americans were diagnosed with oral cancer. People with oral cancer often experience a burning sensation whenever they eat spicy foods. As their condition worsens, they find difficulty to open their mouth. These are because of the lesions which are present inside the mouth as a result of the cancer. Smoking and alcohol are the recorded top reasons why people at risk of oral cancer. There is an even bigger risk when a person drinks and at the same time smokes heavily. Drinking and smoking have both a collaborative consequence on oral cancer. This is the reason why some recent study closely linked alcohol-based mouthwash to oral cancer. As an alcohol-based mouthwash is gargled, it leaves Acetaldehyde, which enables substances causing cancer (e.g. Nicotine) to get through the linings of the mouth with no trouble. However for now, there are still no extensive evaluations which can show valid proofs that gargling with mouthwash is harmful.

With almost tens of millions of candles being sold yearly and is believed to be worth Pounds125 millions, it can be said that candles are still very popular nowadays. With this huge number of candles bring sold and being burned and used, scientists and researchers ventured on the effects on health of candle smoke.

A recent study at the South Carolina State University found out that candle fumes, especially in closed and unventilated spaces, can cause health problems like asthma, allergies and even cancer. According to Amid Hamidi, the co-author of the research, candles made from paraffin wax emit fumes that pose health threats to individuals. However, he clarified that lighting candles in unventilated and closed spaces for a longer time can be the cause of these problems. He also stressed that occasional paraffin-made candles’ emissions can cause you no harm.

This study is based on experimenting burning candles in a small chamber for five hours. The chemicals released in the small chamber are then soaked in charcoal and were put under a spectrogram to identify the chemicals present. It was found out that paraffin-based candles have chemicals like toluene and benzene. Toluenene can cause dizziness and benzene is a known carcinogen, which incidentally is also present in tobacco smoke. The study also experimented with candles created from soy and beeswax. They found out that they are free from these hazardous chemicals. This study can be found in a publication of the American Chemical Society.

With the advent of these new findings, experts have this to say. Dr Noemi Eiser, the Honorary Medical Director of the British Lung Foundation, said and reassured the public that the occasional use of paraffin candles should not have health effects especially on lung health. Dr. Joanna Owens of the Cancer Research UK reiterates that no hard and direct evidence yet is linked with everyday use of paraffin candles. She also stressed that in terms of indoor-air pollution, a more concrete linkage with cancer is attributed to second-hand smoke. She also reminded the public that risk factors associated with cancer, such as obesity, unhealthy diet and lifestyle, inactivity, smoking and alcohol are the topmost concerns when it comes to cancer.

With these experts’ advice, it is important to note that candles – be it paraffin, soy or beeswax should be used with utmost care. So the next time you soak in the tub after enjoying an aromatherapy essential oils, make sure that you open your bathroom windows to have the trapped fumes circulate in the air. Making your room airy and well-ventilated is important especially after lighting even organic candles.

It is devastating for someone to be told that medicine has run out of options and there is no more treatment that can be offered. Some patients adapt to what they consider the inevitable. However some people fight tooth and nail to have a longer period of time before they die. They want to explore every option. Is this realistic? Are there any cancer remedies or natural cancer treatments that have been shown to work?

The official medical answer to that is, no, or medicine would be using them. However it has to be acknowledged that there are some people who, despite their medical prognosis, do much better than expected, and most medical people have no idea why that is. Much research has been done but few doctors know of it and even fewer believe that it is their role to tell patients about it.

I was talking to a medical professor about the research which showed that cancer patients who exercised did much better, on average than those who didn’t exercise and about other research which showed that psychological stresses lead to reduced immune function. He knew the research existed, but did not believe it was his role to tell people how to live their lives and so was very vague about the results.

When asked whether a woman with breast cancer would want to know that if she undertook three hours of moderate exercise a week she might cut the chance of future cancer problems in half, he just shrugged his shoulders. It was the same when asked if someone with high blood pressure might like to know that good social support helps regulate their cardiovascular system. He made some comment about such research coming up in the year 3 medical curriculum but there was no emphasis on it thereafter. It wasn’t his role to go into the psychosocial mire of people’s lives.

It was similar when we talked about diet. When presented with evidence that some foods can reduce the damage done by sunlight (hence a skin cancer preventive), other foods which reduced the chance of mutation damage, nutrients which helped the body attack the cancer cells, he drew himself up to his full height and said, “I very much doubt it.” He turned away.

What is really sad is that this doctor is one who believes he is open to research, open to alternatives and there to meet the needs of his patients.

To be fair, there is a huge amount of research out there. It is impossible for one person to stay up to date in regards to every aspect of medicine. This is even more difficult for the family physician or general practitioner who must cover all disciplines. Most of them make do with the guidelines given to them by governments and drug companies.

There is also the huge impact of the pharmaceutical companies who provide instant answers to dealing with the patient in the consultation. If the patient can leave the surgery with a prescription, in very many cases, both practitioner and patient are happy.

A great many when faced with matters of severe illness need to trust their doctor and just accept what they are told.

However there are a group who remember the few that do much better than expected and the cases of miracles they hear about in their religious tradition and on the TV. Many of these want to know, in detail, everything possible which might improve their outcomes. Sadly few medical professionals can tell them.

But now with the internet and the huge amount of information online it is possible for people who need to know to find out what they can do to improve their chances of recovery. I do offer a word of warning. It is not likely that there is just one herb, or highland berry, or magical elixir which will make the difference in terminal disease. It is much more likely that your cancer remedy will be a mixture of a healing diet, exercise, good self care, a useful psychology, social support and a connection to nature and place.

The fact that some people do much better than expected indicates that there is a physiological process by which cancers can regress and sometimes disappear altogether. So do keep hope alive and in the meantime explore what improves your quality of life. As one of the survivors in my research said, “Quality, quality, make every second count.”

Dr Harriet Denz-Penhey is an internationally recognized health researcher who has done groundbreaking research into patient self care in serious illness. The web site http://www.cancerremedies.org discusses aspects of natural cancer treatment and remedies for good general health.

On Oct. 15, CBC Radio’s program “The Current,” featured author Barbara Ehrenreich’s latest book, Bright-sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America

In her book, Ehrenreich takes a trenchant look into America’s obsession with presenting a “positive” image at all times and at all costs. Spurred by her own reaction to a bout of breast cancer, Ehrenreich came face-to-face with the near obsessive culture of positivity, which led to her questioning not only what purpose it serves, but how it came to exist.

Ehrenreich’s experience and advice from others, that she had to be positive to beat cancer, is a common experience for many cancer patients. Ten years ago when I was diagnosed with cancer, my own surgeon, just before the surgery, told me that he would do a great job but that I had to work on my positive mental attitude. This scared me even more, and led me to believe that my healing and recovery from cancer was solely dependant on my attitude. Ehrenreich had a similar experience, with many people telling her that in order to heal she should have one kind of feeling or approach and it best be positive.

With the myth busting powers for which she is acclaimed, Ehrenreich exposes the downside of America’s penchant for positive thinking: On a personal level, it leads to self-blame and a morbid preoccupation with stamping out “negative” thoughts. On a national level, some argue that it’s brought America an era of irrational optimism resulting in disaster.

As a life, business and results coach, who has cancer survivors in her practice, I firmly believe in the power of positive thinking. My doctor’s advice wasn’t bad. But like all things taken to the extreme, when it doesn’t allow for the full range and spectrum of human emotions, it can be limiting. And there’s also the danger that adopting a positive attitude to the extreme can lead to people living in that Egyptian River called “Denial.” Which, after something serious like a cancer diagnosis, can be a great place to wade in temporarily, I did it myself. But only in the short term. The happiest, most successful people are those who both have a positive mental attitude but are also realistic about their lives.

Food for Thought Determine which side of the spectrum you lean towards, are you too optimistic and wading in that famous Egyptian River, or are you pessimistic to an extreme? After determining this, spend the rest of the week altering your thoughts in the new direction you want to move towards. Over time and with practice, your new attitude will be your fallback position for everything in your life.

A significantly higher number of African Americans die from cancer than Caucasians – a recent study corroborates statistical figures that seem to remain almost unchanged from as early as 1981.

While the death rate for cancer has drastically decreased in the recent past, the gap between the death rate in Caucasians and African Americans still remains the same. African Americans seem to be at more risk to die from cancer than Caucasians.

African American women have a higher death rate than Caucasians women, compared to the percentage in 1981. For African American men, the higher death rate as compared to Caucasians men remains almost the same as before.

Estrogen receptive (ER) negative breast cancers are likely to be developed more by black women than white women. The ER negative breast cancer is more deadly than the breast tumors that are ER positive. Still, this biological disparity does not explain the advantage of survival that white patients seem to have when affected by cancer.

The difference in survival rates may have something to do with the socio-economic backgrounds of most of the African American and Caucasian population, according to experts. African Americans tend to be diagnosed of cancer at a much later and more advanced stage of cancer than the Caucasians. They may also not be able to afford high end treatments as the Caucasians.

The relatively poor education and awareness among African Americans, lack of access to advanced diagnostic facilities and even the qualifications of physicians who are likely to treat the African American population have been shown as possible causative factors for this gap.

The level of education seems to have the greatest effect on cancer survival on both the Afro-American and Caucasian population. To close the racial gap, African Americans are encouraged to have a personal doctor, to be more proactive about their health, diet and exercise, and to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Even biologically driven differences that cause disparity in cancer survival rates between white and black patients may be driven by factors such as poverty and culture.

The healthcare system also needs to ensure that adequate training and resources are provided to hospitals handling Afro-American cancer patients to bring down this gap. Research done on this area seem to categorically point to the act that if medical care were equal and if preventive care was emphasized more for black patients bringing it at par with the white patients, the disparity in cancer survival would largely come down.

Being diagnosed with cancer is devastating, there’s nothing like the impact of those three little words, “you have cancer.” I know this only too well as a 10-year survivor and as someone whose Mom, Dad, Aunts and Grandpa have battled with the disease.

At the time of my diagnosis I was shell shocked, as most of us are. I was even more confused by the variety of treatment choices offered me. Decisions about a lumpectomy or mastectomy, a TRAM flap or silicone or saline implants were all part of this challenging time.

While I’m a big proponent of having choice, after all, it is our body, it was one of the few times in my life where I would have loved to have passed off the decisions to someone else. But that wasn’t an option and so I made my own decision, after lots of reading and interviewing.

While no one had an issue with my choices, this isn’t always the case. I had a friend who chose alternative cancer treatments, to many of her friends dismay. My own Mom, after two brutual rounds of chemotherapy announced that she was done regardless of what her oncologist said. Her decision was incredibly upsetting to me, but as someone who had just gone through her own cancer journey, I felt strongly that the decision around her cancer treatment was hers to make.

In situations like these, what are the steps you should take to help the cancer patient through their treatment journey? The following nine tips will help you navigate this challenging time.

1. Realize that it’s not your treatment decision, no matter how invested you may be. The responsibility for their cancer treatment is theirs and only theirs to make.

2. Be open to expressing but not determined to have your opinion heard. It’s the cancer patient’s right to ask you for your opinion if they want it, not your right to offer unsolicited advice. Remember how you feel when people give you unsolicited advice when you don’t ask for it.

3. Acknowledge your own fears. It’s hard to be impartial if you’re fearful yourself. Determine whether the cancer patient is open to hearing your fears, or whether you need to go somewhere else to talk with someone who’s less involved and removed a degree or two.

4. Don’t feel bad if you’re not up to being the patient’s sounding board. It’s not uncommon for patients’ families and loved ones to be triggered by the cancer diagnosis and consequently emotionally unavailable to help. If you can’t provide the support needed, get the name of a therapist who can and refer your loved one to her.

5. If you feel like you can handle discussing their treatment options, ask if they would like help with the decision-making process. Alternatively, ask what other information they need and if you can get it for them.

6. If they are open to it and you’re available emotionally, review the pros and cons of the treatments being considered. Treatments are like medication, they have pros and cons, and side effects.

7. Trust their judgment. The patient is a better expert on their body and on themselves than others will ever be. Although you might not understand their reasoning, remember the old saying about not being able to judge someone until you walk a mile in their shoes.

8. Know that there’s power in having a patient choose their treatment. Studies on placebos prove that by choosing a treatment, the efficacy of the treatment increases in the patient’s mind, which is the place where all true healing really begins.

9. Whatever their choice, support them to the max. Your opposing their choices will undermine their chances of recovery by instilling doubts or fears about their plan of attack.

Letting the patient decide how much input you have into their cancer treatment is a supreme act of love, and often challenging to do. But by doing so you acknowledge their competence and a true understanding that these decisions are the cancer survivor’s to make.

There has been a long debate and conflicting studies on whether cell phones can cause cancer. This is one of the most important debates that affects everyone, since nearly all of use use cell phones. There has recently been a study over 10 years that has been released regarding this topic. It states that cell phones actually can cause cancer and tumors for those who are using cell phones for long periods of time.

This study directly conflicts with studies that have been released by cell phone companies and related interests. Of course, their study concluded that cell phones definitively did not cause cancer to long term users. One has to imagine whether these studies have been biased due to the group that is funding the studies.

If you think about it, I believe that it is possible for excessive users to possibly get cancer from using cell phones. Nowadays, cell phones are getting more and more technologically advanced with the advent of smart phones that can basically do anything that a computer can.

I have to believe that the emissions that are given off from my computer are not healthy, and so I can assume that it is really bad for our health if we hold up a smart phone next to our head for hours at a time. In order to take precautions, I would recommend that you invest in a head set. This should help you if you have to use the computer for long periods at time. The head sets will also help you when you are driving your car.

No one wants to get sick. But if we do, we often take a leave from school or take a leave from work just to get our health back. It is often better to preempt any sickness that is why we eat healthy food. There is a saying, “prevention is better than cure”, and it definitely is a wise saying. Medical costs are high nowadays and getting sick is a definite no-no. There are many healthy foods out there that claim to be such and one of them is asparagus. There are even reports that it can be used to treat cancer! How true is that?

Reports say that there are patients who have used it to treat and cure several sicknesses such as cancer of the lymph glands, cancer of the bladder, lung cancer and skin cancer. According to second century physician, Galen, asparagus is both “cleansing and healing”. Therefore, looking to this plant as having medicinal value is a wise decision to make. Furthermore, studies have shown that it is a source of low-calorie folate and potassium. Antioxidants are also abundant in its stalks. As you might have heard from various reports and studies, antioxidants are essential in preventing and curing cancer. Additionally, it has the added benefit of being rich in Vitamin C. Really then, asparagus is worth having as part of our meal.

On the other hand, there are skeptical people who claim that the asparagus cure is a hoax. Their main counter points are a) there are no scientific proofs that it can cure cancer and b) high intake of nutritional supplement can increase the risk of cancer. For their first point, while there are no “scientific method style” proofs that it can cure cancer, there are varied reports from around the world that it does. Man started out not knowing any proof but man was able survive and move forward with only trial and error knowledge. Asparagus can qualify in that category not as a trial and error but as a trial and success. Their second point makes a lot of sense. Anything not taken in moderation however good it is, is bad. So if you are going to try the “asparagus treatment”, make sure to take it in moderation but do it at regular intervals.

This article is meant to provide hope to individuals who are looking for a cure especially those with cancer. Cancer is not something easy to deal with and having a glimpse of hope is definitely a reason for rejoicing. You probably can consult with your doctor first before trying this out to check if you have any problems in trying out this treatment. If not, then by all means try it out to see the benefits of asparagus for yourself.

Learn more about the asparagus cancer treatment and asparagus as cancer cure by searching it in the internet using those terms.

Experts agree – eating a diet rich in fresh, natural, wholesome and minimally processed foods that include a daily selection of vegetables, fruits such as berries, chicken (preferably free range, organic and again, minimally processed), fish, legumes, nuts, limited amounts of fats, oils such as olive and canola and healthy starches (sweet potatoes and whole grains) can prevent cancer.

Here are the top recommended anti-cancer foods:

Greens – Spinach, chard, collard, turnip and a whole family of green leafy vegetables are rich in antioxidants that protect your body’s cell structure from damage caused by ‘free radical’ cells that can cause cellular mutation and lead to cancer. One study gave spinach the top ranking of vegetables for its ability to protect against cancer. Try and eat spinach or any one from the family of green, leafy vegetables daily. They are very versatile. Hate cooked spinach? Kale and chard to bitter? Try adding just a few leaves to a salad, sauté lightly with olive oil and garlic, add to soups and stews…it really is easy to get a healthy helping without being “Popeye”

Garlic – Garlic is full of a compound called allicin. Chopping, slicing or dicing a fresh clove of garlic causes this compound to undergo an amazing chemical change. All of these chemicals function as antioxidants that prevent many types of cell mutations that can be the beginning of a cancerous cell. Study continues but points to evidence that in addition to cancer, garlic can aid in the prevention of cancers of the prostate, kidneys, ovaries, larynx, esophagus, prostate and colon. The best way to consume garlic, especially if you not a big fan of the strong flavor is to slowly bake or roast with it. Cooking appears to increase its potency and effect and long cooking reduces the strong flavor into a sweet, smoky flavor. There really is no set amount to consume…just eat as much as you can daily. And if the flavor is just not something you can learn to like, there are a number of pure garlic supplements that will allow you to consume garlic without feeling ‘vampire-proof’.

Tomatoes – Tomatoes have one to the powerful antioxidants found to date called lycopene. Lycopene has shown a remarkable ability to fight disease. Lycopene is best absorbed by the body when accompanied by fats and is more available from cooked tomato products such as ketchup, pasta sauce, tomato soup, etc. This could be one of the reason that the Mediterranean Diets is one of the healthiest diets today. If you are not a fan of tomatoes or tomato products, you can get lycopene supplements that are now appearing at most drug stores and health food stores.

Cold Water Fish – Salmon, sardines and trout are rich in omega-3 fats. These fats have been found to have important anti-inflammatory benefits. Try and eat cold water fish at least twice a week. Wild caught fish appear to have more of the beneficial levels of omega-3 fats than their farm-raised alternatives. Not a fan of fish? Krill oil or omega-3 fatty acid supplements can provide you’re the protection you need.

Broccoli – Sometimes called nature’s miracle cure, broccoli could be the top of the healthy food list. Brocolli contains a substance called Sulforaphane and this increases the body’s liver enzymes that helps remove dangerous toxins from the body. Eat a half cup of broccoli daily. Raw is best as cooking does remove some of the beneficial nutrients. Quick cooking methods are a great compromise – par boil for 2 minutes, immediately strain and place in a ice-water bath to stop cooking. Then drain thoroughly and sauté with garlic, olive oil and red pepper flakes for a delicious and nutritious side for fish, chicken or sprinkle with a little parmesan, serve over slice tomatoes for a meal in itself.
