The colon is the part of the digestive system where the waste material is stored. The rectum is the end of the colon adjacent to the anus. Together, they form a long, muscular tube called the large intestine (also known as the large bowel). Tumors of the colon and rectum are growths arising from the inner wall of the large intestine. Benign tumors of the large intestine are called polyps. Malignant tumors of the large intestine are called cancers.

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), the lower part of your digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of the last 6 inches of the colon. Together, they’re often referred to as colorectal cancers. About 112,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer annually, and about 41,000 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed each year, according to the American Cancer Society.

Most colorectal cancers begin as a polyp (say “pahl-ip”). At first, a polyp is a small, harmless growth in the wall of the colon. However, as a polyp gets larger, it can develop into a cancer that grows and spreads.

Common Causes of Colon Cancer

Most colorectal cancers arise from adenomatous polyps—clusters of abnormal cells in the glands covering the inner wall of the colon. Over time, these abnormal growths enlarge and ultimately degenerate to become adenocarcinomas.

Adenomas: These polyps have the potential to become cancerous and are usually removed during screening tests such as flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.

Alcohol: Research has indicated that alcohol increases colorectal cancer risk. Research has also shown that it lowers it, or that it has no effect at all. So which is right? All of it may be. The key appears to be what kind of alcohol you’re drinking.

Inflammatory polyps: These polyps may follow a bout of ulcerative colitis. Some inflammatory polyps may become cancerous, so having ulcerative colitis increases your overall risk of colon cancer.

Age: About 90 percent of people diagnosed with colon cancer are older than 50. Colon cancer can occur in younger people, but it occurs much less frequently.

Environment: Research has shown that environment can play a big part in colon cancer development. Where you live, who’s around you, your occupation, and even when you work may all influence your risk of developing colon cancer.

Diets high in fat are believed to predispose humans to colorectal cancer. In countries with high colorectal cancer rates, the fat intake by the population is much higher than in countries with low cancer rates. It is believed that the breakdown products of fat metabolism lead to the formation of cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens). Diets high in vegetables and high-fiber foods such as whole-grain breads and cereals may rid the bowel of these carcinogens and help reduce the risk of cancer.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC) syndrome is a genetic condition characterized by early-onset colorectal cancer (i.e., develops before age 50) and multiple colorectal cancers. This syndrome also may be associated with other cancers (e.g., cancer of the small intestine, endometrium, stomach, and renal pelvis).

Smoking: Smoking may increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer by as much as 40%. Smokers may swallow some of the cancer-causing chemicals and this may be an explanation for the increased risk of colorectal cancer in smokers. Some of these substances are also absorbed into the bloodstream thus causing increased risk of many cancers.

A human body is made-up of many organs. An organ system is a group of related organs working together to provide a common function. There are a number of organ systems in a human body such as the skeleton system, the nervous system, the muscular system etc. One of the most important organ systems of our body is the digestive system. The colon is an integral part of the digestive system. The digestive system processes nutrients like, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, fats and water from the food and helps to release waste material out from the body. If you are well into your 50’s and you neglect to get proper health care and nutrition, and do not have regular scheduled colonoscopies than you seriously increase your risk of developing colon cancer.

There are a number of precautionary measures that ensure a healthy lifestyle. We should adopt these measures regardless of our age so we can protect ourselves from colon cancer and other deadly diseases. In order to maintain a healthy digestive tract you need to have a healthy and a well balanced diet. Through a quick and simple research you can determine the right amount of calories that is recommended for people with your particular height, weight and size, and also the healthiest way of taking those calories. We should make sure we have an intake of green vegetables like spinach and broccoli, along with the right amount of protein, fiber and calcium. We need to determine which foods contain which vitamin, mineral, and nutrient that are body needs, consume the right amount along with a good multi-vitamin.

Another important safety measure is to have regular flushes of your digestive tract which includes the colon. There are a number of cleansing and detoxifying methods used to clean our digestive system. Many people use different supplements, specific herbs (herbal colon cleansing) or even fasting to cleanse their system. One simple and natural way of flushing your system, removing the toxins and boosting our energy levels is by having water.

Water is probably the best way to cleanse your digestive system and the rest of your body. In order to cleanse our bodies efficiently, we need to drink at least 8 6-ounce glasses of alkaline ionized water every day. Alkaline ionized water is water that has gone through a water ionizer. A water ionizer can be attached to your kitchen tap and provide you with a simple and economical way of getting pure, healthy alkaline ionized water. Unlike tap or bottled water, alkaline ionized water has anti-oxidants which provide numerous benefits for our body. Anti-oxidants help in the flushing process and also help oxygen reach our organs and the entire cellular system faster. This gives the body more energy and makes our bodily functions run more efficiently. Anti oxidants are also known to play a role in slowing the aging process and preventing heart diseases and strokes. Alkaline ionized water is known to help with other types of cancers, fungal and skin diseases, arthritis, heartburn, high blood pressure, headaches and relief from cancer treatments.

By having alkaline ionized water we ensure an endless supply of anti oxidants to our body.

By adding a few table spoons of salt in some warm alkaline ionized water, we can produce a crude enema. If you have a large glass of salted alkaline ionized water after skipping a meal just before, the body will flush many dangerous toxins out. Statistics show that in 2007 the death toll from colon cancer was 52,000 in the U.S. alone. Every year hundreds of thousands of people die from colon cancer throughout the world. These simple and easy tips can help us reduce the risks of developing colon cancer and other serious diseases.

I have just met up with a long time friend of mine, only to find he had spent time in hospital undergoing surgery after a diagnosis of bowel cancer. My friend Tom, whose knowledge about cancer of the colon was limited, naturally accepted all the treatments recommended by his health professional.

Tom had surgery in which they removed a section of his colon and his surgeon informed him afterwards that he had got it all. What Tom wasn’t told was they had got all the cancer they could see but because individual cancer cells are only visible through a microscope there were possibly thousands of rogue cells left behind. He also wasn’t told the surgical removal of cancer doesn’t address the reasons why the cancer first grew so it won’t stop it growing again in the future or shifting to another location.

Tom asked about a change in diet, could it help but was told he needn’t make any as they didn’t think what he had eaten had anything to do with his cancer. Nobody knew to tell him, the most powerful weapon to overcome any cancer is the food you choose to eat everyday. He also should have been told the connection between refined sugar and cancer. It had been discovered back in 19:31 that cancer cells survive by a process of fermentation and the food item that fuels this process is sugar. Eating refined sugar when you have cancer is like pouring gasoline onto a smouldering fire, it accelerates its growth.

He asked about exercise and once again got a negative response. We need exercise everyday to keep our immune system healthy. All cancers are a disease of a weak immune system which has been weakened by the way we live, especially with our sedentary lifestyle. Our immune system needs muscular activity to keep it working efficiently because it doesn’t have a pump like the heart. So with a sluggish immune system it’s not going to remove any cancer cells as they reappear again in the future.

There are many other important pieces of information my friend needed to know to aid his recovery and it’s a sad fact that our medical professionals who are in charge of our health and healing don’t know these facts. That’s why doctors get cancer as well and we have had a few examples here where I live. Their treatments of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy only attack the cancer growths and do nothing for the long term survival of any cancer patient.

All cancers were a rare occurrence 40 to 50 years ago where as today 1 in 3 people living in an industrialised country are being diagnosed with the problem. Cancer has many causes and it’s not hard to find these causes when you carry out research into the cancer industry. Also our 3 orthodox treatments all damage the immune system, the very mechanism that keeps us health, disease free and cancer free.

The problem of getting information about cancer lies with the training of our health professionals. They are solely taught drug based medicine which is only a money orientated system of treatments. Also we don’t have cancer prevention today and that is why it is growing at an alarming rate.

After skin cancer, breast cancer and lung cancer, Colon cancer is the fourth most common cancer type occurring in women across the globe. There are many types of colon cancer: Carcinoid Tumors, Lymphoma, Melanoma and Sarcomas. However, the most common of all the colon cancers is Colon Carcinoma.

A colon in the human body is a long, coiled tube shaped organ, which helps in removing water from the digested food. It is also called the large intestine or the large bowel having four sections: Ascending Colon, Transverse Colon, Descending Colon and Sigmoid Colon. Colon cancer is a type of cancer, which forms in the colon tissues. It is often referred to as colorectal cancer. Colon cancers usually are adenocarcinomas, which mean that they begin in cells releasing mucus and other type of fluids.

Who Are At Risk Of Having Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer is responsible for most of the deaths elated to cancer, but doctors say that an early diagnosis can reduce the risk. Immediate action can also lead to full cure of a patient. The risk of having colon cancer increases, if you:

1-Have cancer elsewhere in your body

2-Have a personal history of breast cancer

3-Have a family history of colon cancer

4-Have colorectal polyps, crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis

Apart from the above stated reasons, the risk of having colon cancer also depends on your diet. Doctors say that chances of colon cancer may increase, if you are having red meat and a high fat with low fibre diet. Some genetic syndromes may be also responsible in developing colon cancer.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

There are several symptoms indicating the presence of colon cancer in your body. Some of them include blood in your stool, narrow stools, tenderness & pain in the lower abdomen, unexplained anaemia, sudden weight loss, constipation, diarrhoea, intestinal obstruction and changes in bowel habits.

Take Immediate Action against the Menace

If you feel that you are having any of the symptoms, contact your doctor immediately. There are many physical exams, which needs to be done on your belly area. There are also imaging tests that are extremely helpful in diagnosing colon cancers. Again, tests similar to sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy confirm the presence of colon cancer.

One more test of detecting colon cancer is the fecal occult blood test (FEBT). After detection of colon cancer, additional tests known as staging is done to check the exact area in which the colon cancer has spread.

Treatment of Colon Cancer

The treatment of colon cancer is mainly dependent on the stage in which it has been detected. The most common treatments for colon cancer are chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy. Chemotherapy medicines kill the colon cancer cells, radiation therapy destroys the cancerous tissue present and surgery may be done to remove the cancer cells.

If treated at an early stage, nearly 90% of patients suffering from colon cancer may survive for minimum of five years after diagnosis. And in cases where the colon cancer does not recur within a period of five years, the patient is considered to be fully cured.

With over 130,000 new cases identified each year, your chances are about 1 in 6, of getting the disease sometime during your life. If you have a primary relative, parent or sibling, with a hereditary form of colon cancer, your chances of getting colon CA is much higher. How much higher? In some cases, such as colon cancer associated with Lynch syndrome, the chances of developing hereditary colon cancer from a genetic donor parent
is a whopping 90-100%! (Lynch syndrome is only associated with about 3-5% of all colon cancer however). So, now that we have a group of patients with a known level of cancer predictability, we have news of a miracle drug that can significantly lower the risk of developing colon cancer. This drug is known as acetylsalicylic acid, or plain old aspirin.

After testing and following an 1100 person test group of patients with Lynch syndrome, researchers came to the conclusion that there was indeed a significant long term drop in colon and endometrial
CA. Half of the group was given a placebo, and the other half was given a daily dose of 600mg of aspirin. That’s equivalent to two adult aspirin tablets. After about 2.5 years, the data showed no significant difference in the cancer rate, but after 4 years, there were only 6 cases of colon cancer in the aspirin group. That’s in contrast to the 16 cases of persons with Lynch syndrome, that took the placebo, and developed colon cancer.

Therefore if we stunt the cancer cell growth and division, we stunt the development of tumors. There is still a lot of research and studies to do before your gastroenterologist or oncologist will recommend this regimen for you, but hey, its only aspirin.

Soda drinkers and coffee lovers will be thrilled with this news. A recent review finds that taking in high amounts of coffee or sugared soda do not appear to raise colon cancer risk.

Earlier research findings have been murky where coffee and cancer risk are concerned, though sugared sodas have been reliably linked to obesity and other health problems that are thought to increase the risk of colon cancer.

In this latest review researchers evaluated 13 studies including more than 730,000 subjects from all over the world. The studies lasted from as few as 6 to as long as 20 years. Of the subjects, more than 5,600 were diagnosed with colon cancer.

Colon cancer rates vary widely between countries, and experts suspect that lifestyle factors may well play an important role

The team found that drinking more than 6, eight-ounce cups of coffee a day did not increase the risk of colon cancer. This supports earlier research into coffee drinking and cancer.

Nor did drinking more than 18 ounces a day of sugar filled sodas, though these beverages have been linked to increases in risk factors for colon cancer (such as being obese and having diabetes), but there’s been little direct research on the association.

The researchers note that the number of heavy soda drinkers in their work was small, only 2% of the total, and this may well have impacted the results.

Surprisingly, there was a small but respectable boost (28%) in colon cancer risk for heavy tea drinkers (more than 4, eight-ounce cups of non-herbal tea/day). This too, the researchers caution, requires further study as there were not large numbers of subjects who drank that much tea.

The relationship is unclear at the moment, as tea is known to have antioxidants that are thought to help prevent cancer, but also polyamines that have been found to promote cancer.

The team also noted that their findings on cancer risk were not affected all that much by other factors such as smoking status, alcohol consumption and gender of the subjects.

In a commentary that appeared with the review, experts point out that sugar sodas are the drinks of choice for children in many countries, unlike either coffee or tea.

Sweetened beverage intake is generally lower among older people. These differences in exposure suggest that the intake of sweetened drinks may call for earlier intervention by health care professionals in order to ward off later disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer related death in the U.S., though the rate has been going down (thanks to better screening and treatments) over the last 15 years. This is why, as uncomfortable as they might make you, regular screening tests are one of the best ways to reduce your colon cancer risk. When caught early, patients can expect a complete cure.

Your doctor will tell you that a diet rich in fish oil and other food high in omega-3s is good for your heart – working to cut the risk of hardening of the arteries, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, sudden cardiac death and even heart failure. But now some new research hints that omega 3 benefits might also include cutting your colon cancer risk as well. This form of cancer starts in the large intestine and often brings no symptoms. Omega 3 fatty acids are found in fish like salmon, tuna and halibut, algae and krill, seed oils (walnut oil and flax seed oil) and leafy green veggies.

Work in animals and some small studies in people has found that fish oil supplementation can bring down inflammation, and might also have some cancer-fighting ability. To date, research looking at diets of larger groups of subjects has brought results that aren’t so certain.

In search of answers, researchers looked at the relationship between polyunsaturated fatty acid intake and bowel cancer risk in 1,503 white subjects (including 716 colon cancer patients,787 healthy controls) and 369 African American (213 with colon cancer, 156 controls) subjects.

Among whites, those who’s omega-3 intake was in the top fourth had half the risk of colon cancer compared to those in the bottom fourth. When the team looked separately at the two main fatty acids in fish oil – eicosapentaenoic acids and docosahexaenoic acids – they saw the colon cancer risk also fell with increasing intake.

Researchers also looked at whites and blacks together where they found a lower risk of colon cancer with increasing intake of omega-3s. A separate analysis of the black participants didn’t find this same relationship.

There was an “unexpected” association between the higher omega 3 intake and colon cancer in African American subjects, but the team suggests caution in interpreting this result. It might have been due to chance, though nevertheless they conclude further evaluation would be beneficial.

The team also found that subjects who consumed more omega 6 fatty acids in relation to omega-3s were more likely to have colon cancer.

People in the U.S. typically eat more omega 6 fatty acids (found in palm oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil) than the omega-3 fats. Omega 6 intake in itself didn’t affect cancer risk.

Our bodies can’t make omega-3 fatty acids on their own, so 500 milligrams a day of the components EPA (eiosapentaenoic acid) plus DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is what’s recommended for healthy adults. Getting good fats from food is the best way to go, as 90% of the nutrient (vs. 50% of the supplement form) are absorbed into the body.

If you do decide to use fish oil or other supplements to get the omega-3 you need, remember that even in the U.S., these products aren’t as regulated as they should be. Stay away from “too good to be true” claims, or products backed by research that isn’t printed in a respected, peer reviewed journal.

Reputable manufactures will point out the quality manufacturing processes they use, which all add to the omega 3 benefits. Know too that fish oil capsules can contain the same contaminants as fresh fish, and have been known to leave you with an unpleasant body odor. Never, under any circumstances, take more than the amount recommended on the bottle, and be sure to talk with your doctor before you begin any supplementing program to minimizes colon cancer risk.

Colon cancer is one of the most serious diseases of our time. For a lot of people out there, colon cancer is a death sentence. It is not anyone fault, things often happen in such a way that even if the cancer is detected in its early stages and every method of treatment is tried, survivability is not guaranteed. This is why cancer is so feared, even if the illness is in its light form, the sick person must make some significant changes in his life.

But all is not lost! Fortunately, modern medicine advances at a very fast rate and new breakthroughs come up periodically. There are some new trends in what you need to know about colon cancer. These include new treatments and ways to cope with the illness on a mental level. The first stage of treatment is to go through chemotherapy. That process is pretty much like putting massive amounts of poison into your body. This is very harmful but it could help a lot. The chemotherapy combined with a few specialized drugs could make the cancer go away for good. In recent years, in order to help patient with their cancer and chemotherapy ordeal, medicinal cannabis can be prescribed by an oncologist.

If chemo fails, there is the option of major surgery. The procedure is called colostomy and it is done by removing a part or even the patients entire colon and rectum. While this may take the cancer out of the body, the patient will remain crippled forever. The patient will need external help to be able to dispose of the body waste.

These are the new trends in what you need to know about colon cancer, they may not seem like striking options, but they will save a lot of lives.

There’s a new brilliant e-book, which shows you the recent discoveries in the field of cancer, and a new completely natural colon cancer cure, which anyone can easily apply, and it has been recommended by countless people who have beaten their colon cancer. To get it, please visit this link.

Eliminating colon cancer is actually a matter of eating the right foods – we all know that. It’s just hasn’t been clear exactly which foods make your cancer grow faster, and which put it in remission. Fortunately, the book linked above describes this in detail. If you are a colon cancer sufferer, and are looking for a colon cancer cure, you should try anything even remotely useful. Reading the stories of people, who have successfully beaten their cancer will both be an inspiration to you, and it will show you exactly what steps they took in order to put their cancer in remission.

The e-book showed above has all this great information, put into one place – the stories of cancer surviving patients, the cures they used, the bad effects they had from certain medical procedures, and so on. You’d be surprised how bad of an effect some medical procedures have on a patient. Chemotherapy for example is one of the worst things you can do – sure it kills the weakest cells in the body, but these are not always the cancer cells.

After you have used the colon cancer cure, and successfully eliminated the cancer from your body, you will suddenly feel like you can do anything. That’s one of the reasons why cancer surviving patients always say that if they could go back, and erase the experience of cancer from their memory, they will not do it – it makes them who they are.

There are 3 particular colon cancer warning signs that are very important. They are signs you should not ignore at all.

Why are they important?

Here’s why…A tumor that forms in either your colon or rectum normally grows quite slowly. Because of its slow growth, it doesn’t show any sign or symptom for a long period of time.

What happens more often than not is…when colorectal cancer is diagnosed, it is already at its advanced stage.

This is unfortunate because colorectal tumor at stage 4 is extremely difficult to treat. It requires more than 1 treatment and the survival rate is poor.

So, what signs should you look out for?

Be aware of the following colon cancer warning signs like…

Persistent Fatigue

Fatigue is described as the physical feeling of extreme tiredness or weakness. It can mean other medical conditions but if it is persistent, it can mean cancer.

It is one of the signs of late stage cancer of any type. However, in colon cancer, fatigue can be an early symptom. In fact, it can be your only symptom.

How does this happen?

Fatigue is caused by occult bleeding inside your colon or rectum. Occult bleeding is invisible — something you can’t see. Fatigue is also a symptom that is first noticed by you and nobody else.

Thus, fatigue is a very important symptom. See your doctor if you still feel very, very tired for more than a week or even after going on a vacation.

Persistent Diarrhea

Persistent Constipation

Both are unusual changes in your bowel habits. Why are they considered as unusual changes?

Here’s why…Let’s say you move your bowel once a day regularly everyday. But now you move it either 2 to 3 times daily or 2 to 3 times in a week. This is abnormal particularly if diarrhea or constipation happens persistently.

What does persistent diarrhea or constipation mean?

Persistent constipation alone means there might be a tumor at your rectum which is located next to your anus. A rectal tumor will cause an obstruction against the stool. You will experience difficulty in moving your bowel.

Persistent diarrhea and constipation that occur alternately mean a tumor at the left colon which is the descending section.

Why is this so?

The left section of the colon has a narrower circumference compared to the right section. The stool is semi-solid and the tumor if situated at the left section typically wraps around the colon. This leads to both diarrhea and constipation.

These are just 3 of the signs you should be aware of. There are other important colon cancer warning signs you should know about.

If you would like to read more about them, see Warning Signs of Colon Tumor.
