According to the Mayo Clinic, all three types of skin cancer are on the rise. These include squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and the most serious form – melanoma. The good news is that almost all forms are preventable by avoiding sun exposure or other forms for ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It is also true that early detection can result in successful treatment of even the most aggressive types of skin cancers.

So what exactly causes skin cancer?

Cancerous cells are most likely to form on parts of your body that have the most exposure to sun. The most vulnerable areas include your face, lips, scalp, chest, neck, arms, hands and women’ s legs. You might be surprised to learn that cell malignant cells can also develop in areas of your body that are rarely (or never) exposed directly to sunlight. These areas include between your toes, under your toenails or fingernails, the palms of your hands, and the genital area.

The risk of skin cancer is not limited simply to people with light complexions. But when dark skinned people do develop melanoma, they are more likely to experience it in parts of the body not usually considered to be sun-exposed.

There is also no standard time table for cancerous lesions to develop. Depending on the type of cancer, a skin lesion can develop slowly over many years or appear very suddenly.

Warning signs of skin cancer are usually visual. For basal cell carcinoma, you may notice a waxy bump on your face, neck or ears, or a flat brown scar-like lesion on your back or chest. Squamous cell carcinoma usually appears as a firm red nodule, or a flat scaly lesion, on the face, neck, ear, hands or arms.

Melanoma, which is the most deadly form of skin cancer, can develop anywhere on the body – although it is found most frequently on the trunk, head or neck of men and the arms or legs of women. Melanoma can appear as a large brown spot with darker speckles, or a mole that suddenly changes color or size or bleeds. Melanoma can also appears as a small lesion with an irregular border and blue, red, black or white spots. Shiny, firm dome-shaped bumps can also be a warning sign of melanoma, as well as dark lesions on the soles of the feet, palms of the hands, or on the mucous linings of the nose, mouth, anus or vagina.

While not all changes in your skin are malignant, it is best to have your doctor examine any changes that you notice. With early detection, most skin cancer can treated. And with proper sun protection, it can often be avoided altogether.

She is a big believer in keeping a portable sun shade in the car and never leaves home without her EZ Up Sun Shelter

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers that affect men. Just like Breast Cancer is a gender specific cancer affecting women, prostrate is limited to men. However, it is not limited in terms of the number of affected people it has as of now. Statistics show that one man out of every six in the United States is affected by Prostate Cancer. The beginnings of this cancer in men bring with it a variety of problems. Men suffer from various kinds of urination problems. There is excessive urination at night, and sometimes the urine is accompanied with blood. There is also pain during urination. Even sexual performance gets affected and there are problems during ejaculation.

While the detection of the cancer with the help of the symptoms during the initial stages is very useful, delay can cause a lot of problem. If the tumour is allowed to spread in the body for a long time, men can suffer from permanent bone pain in the pelvic area and the spine. The entire lymphatic system too gets damaged and can have severe effects. Therefore, the first and the foremost thing to be kept in mind for prostate cancer is to combat it as early as possible.

Treatments, irrespective of whatever kind they are, will obviously be more effective in the initial stages for the simple fact that the situation is still under control and has not worsened. However beyond that, treatments too at times can fail.

One of the most common treatments of Prostate Cancer is that of Androgen Deprivation, also known as ADT. Therapy under this is done with surgical castration. With the help of this treatment, the body stops producing testosterone. This helps a lot as testosterone gets converted to DHT, which is a cancer stimulant. And since there is reduced testosterone, there is reduction in the spread of the cancer too to its further stages.

Another famous treatment is that of Cryotherapy. This technique is based on the principle of killing cancer cells in the affected areas. There have initially been a lot of debates over the effectiveness of this technique. However it has come back to limelight in the recent times. But then there are risks involved too. With the use of this therapy, life saving chances can be good, but at the cost of sexual dysfunction, and some other complications.

Radical Prostatectomy is another popular treatment. This one is based on the removal of the root cause of the problem itself. Yes, this treatment removes the prostrate gland itself. However, it needs skilled surgeons and professionals. If this treatment is carried out in an improper manner, it can lead to impotence. Therefore, while the chances of ending the cancer with this treatment are high, the risks involved too are very high.

Certain other therapies and treatments such as those of the Radiation are also growing in popularity. The best kind of treatment that suits you will depend on the severity of your case, for which you need to consult a doctor.

When ovarian cancer patients undergo chemotherapy, nausea and vomiting are the most commonly made complaints. Even as the delivery methods of the chemotherapy drugs may vary, by and large nausea is the universally experienced side effect, closely followed by vomiting. What makes this side effect so miserable for patients is the fact that even on an empty stomach the feelings do not subside, and more than one chemotherapy patient may find herself dry heaving repeatedly during and after her chemotherapy treatment.

Since ovarian cancer treatment quite frequently includes chemotherapy, patients and their physicians have been working hard to figure out ways around this side effect.

* On the day of your chemotherapy, physicians recommend that you have an easy to digest breakfast. Dry toast, Jell-o, saltines, or slices of white bread are recommended. Stay away from eggs and anything else that may be considered a full breakfast. Especially of note is that you should avoid anything with a heightened acidity, such as grapefruit or orange juice.
* Bring along some plain crackers and a bottle of water. Listen to your body and its signals! You may be surprised to find that you are craving food in the midst of chemotherapy. Eat one cracker and see how you feel.
* Once you arrive at home, plan on avoiding the smells of spicy foods. In the same way, avoid the smell of drinks as well. Some ovarian cancer patients have reported that the smell of their children’s hot chocolate or their husband’s coffee suddenly brought on a wave of nausea. To this end it is best to spend the first 24 hour period after chemotherapy without strong scents and odors.
* Keep cool when you feel nauseous. Patients have found that having the car window rolled down is essential in keeping actual vomiting at bay and may actually help to relieve nausea. Physicians suggest that the intake of fresh, cool air is instrumental.
* Come prepared for vomiting. This might sound like an odd piece of advise, but ovarian cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and subsequently suffering from severe nausea have reported that the stress over not having a bag readily available should the sick feeling turn into actual vomiting is so stressful that in the end the vomiting appeared to have been induced by the stress and fear of vomiting.

Some patients have experimented with anti emetic drugs and found that they yielded great results. Of course, any time you ingest any kind of medication, vitamin, herbal remedy, or anything else you must discuss it with your physician first! Some over the counter supplements have been known to alter the way chemotherapy drugs work and there is little benefit in undergoing the treatment if the results are not what you have hoped for due to the use of other substances. As a matter of fact, your doctor should be able to provide you with a list of acceptable and not recommended medications and over the counter remedies for the weeks that you are undergoing chemotherapy!

My name is Juliet Taylor, and I decided to create the website http://www.bodytalk1on1.com when I discovered the many problems that I have developed in my body, that many other people themselves are faced with, but become so trouble because of lack of knowledge about that condition. So, I decide to create this website to inform people on different types of conditions that affects our body. People say what you don’t know won’t hurt you, but I beg to differ, because know that you have a condition in the development of it’s early stage will make a ton of difference.

The question often asked these days is whether asbestos is still a hazard to people. As many ads as we see on TV talking about Mesothelioma, one would think that asbestos is still a real threat to our home air quality. Research seems to indicate it is not.

Asbestos was used in many building materials in the 19th century because is was found to have some great properties. It actually is a naturally occurring silicate mineral. It has long fibrous crystals and can withstand very high heat.. It is the long fibrous crystals that cause the problems in our lungs. Asbestos was used in buildings in the US through the 1970s. It was used to fireproof roofing and flooring, for heat insulation, and for a host of other purposes.

Asbestos actually becomes a health concern when high concentrations of the fibers are inhaled over a long period of time. This can occur when the fibers are broken loose as they are very light and remain airborne easily. It is hard to imagine, but there are many particles of dust and other matter floating in the air you are breathing right now. When he inhale asbestos fibers they can get trapped in our lungs and eventually cause very small irritation sites that lead to breathing problems and other health issues. It is believed that short high exposures to asbestos is not harmful and even long term, very low level exposures is not that harmful. It is the long term, high exposures that cause the problems.

So what can be done? Since most respirable asbestos fibers are totally invisible to the human eye because their size, the only thing you can do is make sure there is none in your home or you can filter these particles with a good air purifier. It is always best to remove the source of any contaminate than to filter it, but home air filters, such a Blueair filter system can remove these particles if they exist. You must make sure you get a HEPA filter system as the size of these particles is about 3.0-20.0 microns long and can be as thin as 0.01 micron. Human hair ranges in size from 17 to 181 microns in width, so you can understand how very small the asbestos fiber is.

The bottom line in all this is that asbestos is really not much of a threat to our home air quality for most of the population. Older homes may need to be inspected if asbestos is suspected, and a good home air purifier can significantly reduce this hazard.

Acute myelogenous leukemia is the most common leukemia and is a fast growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Blood cells in the body are made up of platelets known as white and red blood cells. Those who have AML don’t have enough white or red blood cells and instead posses abnormal cells that grow quickly as the illness progresses.

AML is not genetic nor is it infectious however it is mostly caused by being exposed to benzene.

What is Benzene?

Benzene is an organic chemical compound. Benzene is used in production of oil, rubber, dyes and plastic. Benzene is commonly used as an additive in other chemicals. There are small amounts of benzene used in manufacturing processes for instance, detergents, pesticides and drugs.

Benzene is linked to various forms of cancer, as well as other physical issues such as dizziness and mental confusion; anemia; and depressed functioning of the immune system.. People are often not aware that they have been exposed to benzene.

Symptoms of AML

Benzene exposure may occur when people breathe or ingest it through any number of common products used in daily life and at work. Being exposed can lead to a fatal illness such as acute myelogenous leukemia. There are signs you can look for.

Some symptoms of AML include:

* Abdominal swelling

* Infections that continue or repeat

* Difficulty breathing and lack of energy

* Pain in the joints or bones

Treatments

Age and disease subtype are factors that doctors will take into consideration in planning the right treatment for the person living with AML. Some treatments that are considered are:

* Chemotherapy

* Transplants from bone marrow or cord blood

* If the subtype is promyelocytic leukemia, then all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) may be used.

If you think you may have been exposed to benzene and have any of the symptoms listed above, please, contact an experienced attorney to get legal support and the direction you need.

When it comes to reducing your risk of developing colon cancer, there is a lot of good news. This is a type of cancer that usually develops slowly, which means that there is time to take steps to prevent it or at least to detect it before it becomes serious.

One of the best ways to prevent colon cancer is through a healthy diet.

Eat more vegetable and fruits

If you eat three or more servings of vegetables a day, you can lower you risk of developing colon cancer. It is not clear why, but it appears that the folic acid in vegetables helps keep ceels healthy. Generally speaking, a serving is about half a cup of chopped vegetables or a cup of leafy greens.

Fruits and veggies supply a variety of essential vitamins and minerals, and also contain cancer-fighting substances known as phytochemicals.

After convening an expert panel that reviewed hundreds of epidemiological studies on dietary intake of fruits and vegetables, the American Institute of Cancer Research found overwhelming evidence that fruit and vegetable consumption reduces the risk of cancer.

Eat more bread, beans and bananas

Experts recommend eating more of the types of foods that will fill you up, while at the same time, providing a variety of vitamins, minerals, protein, complex carbohydrates and fiber. Such foods include whole grains found in breads, cereals, pasta, and rice; legumes, such as beans and peas; plantains, such as bananas; and roots and tubers, such as sweet potatoes.

Look for foods that have been minimally processed and that contain few refined sugars; such foods are generally the best sources of nutrients and other beneficial substances. For example, whole-grains wheat breadis better than white, and bran cereal is better than cerals with frosting or that taste like cereal.

Eat less red meat

If you have more than one serving of red meat(beef, pork, lamb or venison) per day, you are at increased risk of colon cancer. Meat appears to contain substances that can turn normal cell cancerous. The best way to eat less meat per week is to find substitutes: chicken, fish, pasta or vegetables.

Cook meats safely

The way that meats are cooked is also important. Known or suspected carcinogens are formed when meat or fish is exposed directly to flame or intense heat, as typically happens when food is broiled, roasted, fried or grilled. High temperatures and flames induce chemical reactions as oil and fat drip down, forming new compounds that splatter back up and stick to the surface of the meat. Epidemiological studies have reported that people who frequently eat meats cooked at high temperatures may increase their risk for stomach and colorectal cancers.

Fortunately, this particular cancer risk can be controlled and should be kept in perspective. It is important that foods, and especially meats, be cooked thoroughly to kill any bacterial for people trying to reduce their risk of heart disease, eating broiled or grilled food is often recommended. To reduce your risk of cancer, don’t regularly eat meat that has been overcooked or charred. Eating such foods on an occasional basis won’t greatly increase your risk for stomach and colorectal cancers.

There are other strategies as well. Grill vegetables instead of meat. (Because the vegetables don’t drip fat, cooking them doesn’t create the compounds discussed above.) Choose lean cuts of meat or trim off the fat and skin before cooking. Turn the meat often while cooking, and use tongs or a spatula, which does not puncture the meat.

Choose broiling or grilling, where drippings fall away from the meat and may not splatter up as much, over pan frying-where the meat is in direct contact with both high heat and fat drippings, resulting in the formation of more carcinogens on the meat surface. Or precooked meats by boiling, steaming or microwaving to lessen the amount of time spent grilling.

Limit your intake of cured meats

Processed cold cuts, hams and hotdogs contain nitrites and nitrates as preservatives. Some studies report that diets high in cured meats may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, but others disagree.

So what should you do? The strategy best calculated to reduce your risk of cancer would be to eat cured meats only in moderation. It is unlikely that the occasional hotdog or ham sandwich will materially affect your cancer risk.

Limit your alcohol intake

Alcohol consumption moderately increases the chance of developing colorectal cancer.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia have discovered that the HPV vaccine may be effective in preventing breast cancer, which affects over a million women a year worldwide.

In a new article published in the British Journal of Cancer, the experts reveal that they conducted studies of breast cells and found that there were several strains of HPV present which are known to have a high risk of initiating cancer of the cervix.

A team from UNSW School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, led by visiting professor James Lawson, declared that there was a presence of high-risk HPV in the nuclei of breast cancer epithelial cells in 21 per cent of 14 invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) breast cancer specimens.

IDCs are invasive cancers responsible for up to 80 per cent of all breast cancers and professor Lawson told cancer insurance customers that the results may lead to further large-scale studies being conducted.

UNSW researcher Dr Noel Whitaker, a co-author of the new report, commented: “The finding that high-risk HPV is present in a significant number of breast cancers indicates they may have a causal role in many breast cancers.

People use mouthwash to reduce tendencies of bad breath. Moreover, mouthwash has some properties which kill known bacteria residing in the mouth. It is one effective way to rinse the mouth and therefore, it promotes good oral hygiene. Twenty five percent of the Americans have halitosis, a chronic bad breath. About seventy percent suffers from periodontal disease which includes periodontitis and gingivitis. Therefore majority of the population found the release of mouthwash in the market very helpful. Aside from the mouthwash’s chief task to cleanse the mouth off any accumulating bacteria, it helps with their social activities. There are times bad breath tends to stop people from talking to others. But with the help of mouthwash, people tend to be more confident while interacting with others.

Mouthwash ingredients include thymol, eucalyptol, hexetidine, methyl salicylate, menthol, chlorhexedine gluconate, benzalkolnium chloride, cetylpyridinium chloride, methylparaben, hydrogen peroxide, domiphen bromide, fluoride, enzymes and calcium. There are also water sweeteners such as sorbitol, sucralose, sodium saccharine and xylitol. Some mouthwash has alcohol which takes up to 27% vol. The alcohol content gives an antibacterial effect. According to research, alcohol causes mouth to be dry. It also aggravates the condition of chronic bad breath. It decreases saliva, which naturally makes breath fresh.

A researcher from the Dental Journal of Australia published a report linking mouthwash to oral cancer. It concludes that there is enough proof that alcohol-based mouthwash increases the chance of having an oral cancer. Alcohol based mouthwash has acetaldehyde as its by-product. As Acetaldehyde is produced, it builds up in the oral cavity. The researcher believes it is carcinogenic, thus causing cancer.

However, some dental experts are still firm on their contention that mouthwash reduces mouth infection as it kills bacteria residing in the mouth. That until now, there is no extensive report released evidencing mouthwash as a cause of oral cancer.

Oral cancer happens when a cancerous tissue grows in the oral cavity. Oftentimes, oral cancer is commonly found on the tissues of the lips and the tongue although it may also happen in the floor of the mouth, lining of the cheek, gums and palate.

In 2008, around thirty four thousand Americans were diagnosed with oral cancer. People with oral cancer often experience a burning sensation whenever they eat spicy foods. As their condition worsens, they find difficulty to open their mouth. These are because of the lesions which are present inside the mouth as a result of the cancer. Smoking and alcohol are the recorded top reasons why people at risk of oral cancer. There is an even bigger risk when a person drinks and at the same time smokes heavily. Drinking and smoking have both a collaborative consequence on oral cancer. This is the reason why some recent study closely linked alcohol-based mouthwash to oral cancer. As an alcohol-based mouthwash is gargled, it leaves Acetaldehyde, which enables substances causing cancer (e.g. Nicotine) to get through the linings of the mouth with no trouble. However for now, there are still no extensive evaluations which can show valid proofs that gargling with mouthwash is harmful.

Skin cancer is on a definite rise amongst people all over the world and this is becoming a major cause for concern for those who’re constantly under the glare of the sun. Skin cancer is known to be caused by overexposure to UV radiation which can be direct or indirect. This is particularly harmful for those whose jobs or work entail traveling or those who’re always on the move.

The sun’s rays can be harmful but it is next to impossible to ensure complete isolation from it because then one would have to stay cooped up indoors all the time and that is not what one can afford in these times. The best way is to ensure that the UV rays are prevented from harming your skin. As is usually believed, skin cancer does not always have symptoms like sunburns which means that you could have already been inflicted by the disease and in the first few stages you will be completely unaware of it. Shocking and terrifying, isn’t it? Well you don’t have to go sick with worry because we have a few tips to ensure that you’re well protected from the glare of the sun.

Everyone from doctors and cosmetic surgeons and specialists to skin care professionals will advise you to use a sunscreen and indeed, this is the safest and one of the most important ways to ensure skin protection. Try not to be out of doors for too long when the sun is directly overhead but if this is absolutely unavoidable and you simply have to bear the sun and the heat, make sure you are armed with a good sunscreen. Some of these creams nowadays can actually harm your skin instead of doing any good so make sure that you get one from a well-known and reputed brand. Remember, this is your skin and you don’t a cream that will destroy it, in a bid to keep from spending more money. If spending a little more money gets you the best sunscreen, go for it. Also, see that the sunscreen has an SPF of at least 15 and if you’re a regular sun worker, raise the bar to an SPF 30.

The best way to combat the sun is to wear a straw hat. These hats come with a wide brim that not only covers your head and face but also your neck and shoulders. You must have seen numerous postcards with pretty pictures of people wearing straw hats and enjoying a fine morning out in the garden. Well it is time to adorn one of these hats yourself! You can go for a simple classic straw hat or one that comes with embellishments if it’s a day out in the town for you. They are easily available and very affordable too. If you agree to lighten your pockets, you can get straw hats specialized for controlling moisture and sweat caused by the sun. These hats are most fantastic and stylish to adorn too!

These hats are easy to clean too! Just a bit of soap and water and hang it on a peg to dry in the sun and in no time, your straw hat will be ready to sit on your pretty head and take a walk in the park!

I wonder why some doctors seem to pronounce the dreaded “you have cancer” on victims of the condition with some degree of “finality” as if that’s the end of the road for them. While certainly most will disagree that doctors seem to enjoy it, who knows – they just might. But whether they enjoy pronouncing it or not, you shouldn’t let the pronouncement be the end of the world for you.

This is because everything the doctors say can’t be guaranteed. If they say you are going to live for only 2 more years, there’s no guarantee of that. They are only supposing. So, don’t let their pronouncement make you lose all hopes of life. If you still have any bit of life in you, then you can still do all you can to fight the condition to a standstill and – wait for it – WIN!

Yes, you read that right. There are lots of prostate cancer survivors and conquerors out there who have successfully defeated the condition. The point is – if they could, you CAN as well. All you have to do is find out what they did to survive the cancer and do the exact same things. You just might get the same results. Don’t just sit alone and wait for death. Stand up and FIGHT and you will be surprised at the results you will get!

I personally know people who have survived prostate cancer and one of the most important factors that helped them, according to them, is their WILLINGNESS to survive it. This fueled an invisible force within them that helped them survive. Like I always say – if they could, you CAN as well!

To know why Prostate Cancer Prognosis Shouldn’t Scare, all you have to do is Click Here!
