Prostate Cancer Help – How to Deal With It
Doctors and researchers believe there are certain factors that raise your chances of getting the disease. These are called risk factors for prostate cancer. Doctors cannot explain why one man gets prostate cancer and another does not, but they do know that no one can “catch” prostate cancer from another person.
Dietary factors likely play a role in fatal cases, while hormones are also important in regulating its growth. Diet and lifestyle are also believed to influence men’s development of the disease. Men who eat more red meat are believed to be more likely to develop the condition, while those who have more vegetables and fruits in their regular diet have a lower chance rate. Men with higher serum levels of the short-chain omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid have higher rates of prostate cancer.
Research has shown a link between high saturated-fat diets and prostate cancer. Some experts argue that a lack of fruit and vegetables is the problem, and that people with high-fat diets get more cancer because they tend to eat fewer vegetables. Researchers speculate that this might be due to the difference between the diet and lifestyle of Western and Asian men. Westerners usually take in more red meat while Asians are more likely to eat vegetables and fruits.
Zinc supplementation over long periods , may also lead to an increased risk of developing the condition. Zinc deficiency causes the prostate to enlarge. This may be due to aging or uncontrolled diet with excessive alcohol drinking.
Genetics also plays a role in the risk of this disease. For example, black American men have a higher risk of getting prostate cancer than do Japanese or white American men. Genetic testing for most of these genes is not yet available.
Treatment cannot fully cure men of this disease, but can enhance their life with several years. However, if diagnosed early, prostate cancer can be treated successfully through any of the following.
1. In a procedure called orchiectomy, the patient’s testicles are removed to reduce the amount of testosterone, thereby controlling the growth of cancer cells.
2. Treatment of aggressive tumors and of men with more than 10 years of life expectancy can include radiation therapy, surgical removal of the gland, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy if spread of the cancer is suspected.
Studies have found that there is a connection with the use of medications. Research has shown that daily use of anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen may decrease prostate cancer risk. Studies suggest that dietary fiber reduces cancer risk, and omega-3 fatty acids also have shown a protective benefit against cancer. Flaxseed is also a rich source of lignan, a specific family of fiber-related compounds that appear to play a key role in influencing both estrogen and androgen metabolism.
Diets that are rich in raw foods and vegetables are known to help prevent prostate cancer. Antioxidant foods help reduce “free radicals” in the body, which damage cell structure and may be a trigger for cancer development. A low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables can greatly reduce the likelihood of disease.
