Reduce Your Risk

cells

Consider this number: 10 million. That’s how many cases of cancer are diagnosed worldwide each year. Now consider this number: 15 million. That’s how many cases of cancer the World Health Organization estimates will be diagnosed in the year 2020 — a 50 percent increase — if we don’t get our act together.

Most cancers don’t develop overnight or out of nowhere. Cancer is largely predictable, the end result of a decades-long process, but just a few simple changes in your daily life can significantly reduce your risk. Here are 31 great tips.

1. Serve sauerkraut at your next picnic. A Finnish study found that the fermentation process involved in making sauerkraut produces several other cancer-fighting compounds, including ITCs, indoles, and sulforaphane. To reduce the sodium content, rinse canned or jarred sauerkraut before eating. 2. Eat your fill of broccoli, but steam it rather than microwaving it. Broccoli is a cancer-preventing superfood, one you should eat frequently. But take note: A Spanish study found that microwaving broccoli destroys 97 percent of the vegetable’s cancer-protective flavonoids. So steam it, eat it raw as a snack, or add it to soups and salads.

Skin, the most visible and largest organ of the body, is under constant stress by environmental toxins and ultraviolet rays. How can we protect our delicate shield from premature aging and skin cancer? The market is saturated with expensive topical lotions that promise eternal beauty and youthfulness but how much good do they really do and can they really protect us? Modern science and research has discovered that antioxidants have a powerful and protective impact on our bodies and offer prevention from many diseases and cancers. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which are molecules that damage cells. By damaging skin cells free radicals contribute to wrinkles, other signs of aging, and possibly skin cancer. A major source of these unwelcome free radicals is sunlight, especially UVA, which penetrates deeper than UVB. By neutralizing the free radicals from sunlight and other sources, antioxidants help keep your skin cells healthy and your skin looking and feeling youthful.

Antioxidants stop chain reactions and minimize the damage to cells, hopefully before they cause irreparable damage like groups of cancerous cells or damaged DNA. Often the antioxidant is self-sacrificing and gets oxidized to stop the reaction. The antioxidant will have a stable end product which means the chain reaction stops. It does mean however that we need a constant intake of antioxidants to replace the ones that have succumbed to oxidation each day. Continue reading ‘Broccoli – the new sunscreen?’ »

Cancer is still one of the most prevalent killers in our society.  The medical field has made giant strides in fighting this disease, but there are things that we can do as individuals to help our bodies fight off cancer.

  1. Eat colorful foods.  Basically you should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables of all colors—red, green, yellow and orange. A colorful variety of fruits and vegetables contain anti-oxidants that fight cancer.  You should try to eat at least five servings per day.
  2. Have fewer/safer x-rays.  If you have to have an x-ray in your dentist’s office, ask if they have the capability to do digital x-rays which contain 75% less radiation than traditional x-rays.  Also, try not to have an excessive number of MRI’s or CAT scans, which have also been linked to cancer.
  3. Avoid cigarette smoke.  If you don’t smoke, then don’t start.  Also, stay away from second-hand smoke as much as you can.  Cigarette smoke contains more than 60 toxins which put you at risk for a variety of cancers, including lungs, mouth, throat, pancreas and breast. The physical exam starts with the pelvis in which a sample of cells is taken directly from the vagina and then subjected to laboratory tests.
