Nearly every woman has contemplated the possibility of breast cancer and what she would do if she was ever diagnosed. When I find myself wondering what I would do if I discovered I had cancer in my breast, I realize I should educate myself on the matter so that if a diagnosis ever comes, like it does with many unsuspecting women every year, I will be ready to face the necessary. With knowledge comes the power of awareness and the ability to stop cancer in its tracks if it is every detected.

The first thing that might make me concerned is if the doctor finds a suspicious lump in my breast from the results of a mammogram. What usually will happen at that point is the doctor will run another test on me to confirm the findings. I could also receive a painless ultrasound which would determine the malignancy of the lump. If it is beginning, as most irregular lumps are, there is nothing to worry about and I can rest at ease again. If the doctor determines I may have cancer in my breast, he may recommend a biopsy. This is when a small piece of the infected tissue is examined under a microscope. It is by this process that the determination of whether or not the cells are cancerous is made.

While it can certainly be a nuisance to go through the required procedures to recognize the presence of cancer in my breast, the fact that it can be lifesaving makes it worth the trouble. It is recommended that women age 40 to about 50 should have a mammogram every two years or so to catch anything irregular before it becomes severe. Also, women age 50 and above should have a yearly mammogram as risk factors increase with age. Women under 40, unless they have breast cancer risk factors, need not get a mammogram. Regular physicals and doctor checkups can be sufficient for younger women unless there is a specific risk like history of breast cancer in the family.

Almost all cancer victims will have surgery to remove the cancerous tissues before they spread. This is a scary fact, one that every woman who finds herself at risk for breast cancer should understand. I realize the importance of being self informed about how cancer identification procedures work so if I ever learn I have cancer in my breast, I will be prepared to face what I need to in order to recover.

The breasts sit on the chest muscles that cover the ribs. Each breast is made of 15 to 20 lobes. Lobes contain many smaller lobules. Lobules contain groups of tiny glands that can produce milk. Milk flows from the lobules through thin tubes called ducts to the nipple. The nipple is in the center of a dark area of skin called the areola. Fat fills the spaces between the lobules and ducts.

Breast cancer incidence is much higher in industrialised Western countries, whether in Europe or North America, than in developing countries. North American women have the highest incidence of breast cancer in the world. Among women in the U.S., breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second-most common cause of cancer death (after lung cancer). Women in the U.S. have a 1 in 8 (12.5%) lifetime chance of developing invasive breast cancer and a 1 in 35 (3%) chance of breast cancer causing their death. In 2007, breast cancer was expected to cause 40,910 deaths in the U.S. (7% of cancer deaths; almost 2% of all deaths)

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women and the second most common cause of cancer death in women in the U.S. While the majority of new breast cancers are diagnosed as a result of an abnormality seen on a mammogram, a lump or change in consistency of the breast tissue can also be a warning sign of the disease. Heightened awareness of breast cancer risk in the past decades has led to an increase in the number of women undergoing mammography for screening, leading to detection of cancers in earlier stages and a resultant improvement in survival rates.

Breast cancer is the number one disease that women in the United States fear the most, and for compelling reasons. It is the leading cause of death among women between 40 and 55 years of age and is the second overall cause of death among women (exceeded only by lung cancer). Unfortunately, it is also on the rise worldwide. According to the American Cancer Society, this year about 175,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer and about 43,300 deaths from breast cancer will occur among women in the USA.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy affecting women in North America and Europe. Close to 200,000 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in the United States in 2001. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American women behind lung cancer. The lifetime risk of any particular woman getting breast cancer is about 1 in 8 although the lifetime risk of dying from breast cancer is much lower at 1 in 28. Men are also at risk for development of breast cancer, although this risk is much lower than it is for women.

Breast cancer is more easily treated and often curable if it is found early. Monthly breast self-examinations should begin at age 20. Recommended screening methods include breast self-examination and mammography.

The most serious cancers are metastatic cancers. Metastasis means that the cancer has spread from the place where it started into other tissues distant from the original tumor site. The most common place for breast cancer to metastasize is into the lymph nodes under the arm or above the collarbone on the same side as the cancer. Other common sites of breast cancer metastasis are the brain, the bones, and the liver.

Death rates from breast cancer have been gradually declining and continue to decline. These decreases are likely due both to increased awareness and screening and improved treatment methods.

Breast cancer is a dreadfully alarming illness that is why taking cautious steps to breast cancer prevention is very important. Worldwide 1 woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 29 seconds and every 75 seconds 1 woman in the world dies from breast cancer. Breast cancer is the condition the majority of women fear more than any other disease. This is mainly because they think there is nothing they can do about it; they feel and do not realize the power of today’s breast cancer prevention strategies.

Most women know if they want to reduce their possibility of osteoporosis they can get enough calcium in their diet they can get some exercise or get enough vitamin D; if they want to reduce the risk of a heart attack they can make sure their cholesterol is not too high and they can also get some exercise. However many women do not think there is anything at all that they can do to help prevent breast cancer but the great news is that is there heaps they can do in efforts to breast cancer prevention. For instance make sure that you get sufficient vitamin D in your body. Vitamins can help reduce the risk of multiple types of cancers, such as Breast cancer, Prostate cancer, Colon cancer, Lung cancer.

Every time our skin is exposed to sunlight the cholesterol in our skin is converted into vitamin D, but for the regular person who works inside they do not construct enough vitamin D in their body. You can ask your doctor to do a blood test on you to find the amount of vitamin D and most people are actually missing.

If you have dark skin you are going to need to spend more time outdoors than a fair-skinned person will to aquire enough sunlight to make an efficient amount of vitamin D. if you use sun screen this will inhibit your body from being able to manufacture vitamin D. It is imperative not to get sun burned, however please remember that some sunlight is vitally important for good health because of vitamin D.

Women who are vitamin D deficient at the time of being diagnosed with breast cancer are 94% more likely to have their cancer multiply and they are 73% more likely to die from breast cancer in the next 10 years than women who are not vitamin D deficient. So vitamin D is a vital instrument when it comes to breast cancer prevention.
Facinatingly, overweight people are commonly vitamin D deficient because it is a fat soluble vitamin; this means the vitamin ends up being stored in their body fat and not their bloodstream where they need it.

Environmental chemicals are a known potential cause of breast cancer. According to the Silent Spring Institute, in the USA a total number of 216 unlike chemicals and radiation sources are internationally recognized as causing breast cancer. Have a look at the kind of chemicals you have around your home and chemicals you put on your body; moisturizers, perfumes, shampoo, cosmetics, toiletries, personal care products, insecticides, and cleaning chemicals. Some of these things hold chemicals called endocrine disrupters or oestrogen mimics. They actually perform like oestrogen in your body; they have a very dominant outcome. Oestrogen in excess can stimulate the growth of breast tumors.

When it comes to breast cancer prevention you have to stay on top of your game. Not knowing can how to reduce the risk is no excuse because the information is widely available. Read part 2 for further breast cancer prevention tips.
