Experts agree – eating a diet rich in fresh, natural, wholesome and minimally processed foods that include a daily selection of vegetables, fruits such as berries, chicken (preferably free range, organic and again, minimally processed), fish, legumes, nuts, limited amounts of fats, oils such as olive and canola and healthy starches (sweet potatoes and whole grains) can prevent cancer.

Here are the top recommended anti-cancer foods:

Greens – Spinach, chard, collard, turnip and a whole family of green leafy vegetables are rich in antioxidants that protect your body’s cell structure from damage caused by ‘free radical’ cells that can cause cellular mutation and lead to cancer. One study gave spinach the top ranking of vegetables for its ability to protect against cancer. Try and eat spinach or any one from the family of green, leafy vegetables daily. They are very versatile. Hate cooked spinach? Kale and chard to bitter? Try adding just a few leaves to a salad, sauté lightly with olive oil and garlic, add to soups and stews…it really is easy to get a healthy helping without being “Popeye” Continue reading ‘Can Eating Certain Foods Prevent Cancer?’ »

There is much passing reference to the need to eat more vegetables in order to avoid cancer, but beyond the urging of some health promotion staff little seems to be written in the lay press in any detail at all. In addition to this, or perhaps because of the simplistic message that is out there, many doctors do not yet recognize the importance of diet in relation both to reducing the chances of the disease occurring but also in the care of patients who have already got cancer. They do not recognize that good nutrition is a natural cancer treatment.

Many doctors are wedded to the fast effects of antibiotics. They really, really want any and every drug to be as effective as antibiotics were when they were first used. And if foods cannot give that sort of effect with the majority of people then a goodly number of them will dismiss the impact of food as being “not really important”. Reduce Your Risk

cells

Consider this number: 10 million. That’s how many cases of cancer are diagnosed worldwide each year. Now consider this number: 15 million. That’s how many cases of cancer the World Health Organization estimates will be diagnosed in the year 2020 — a 50 percent increase — if we don’t get our act together.

Most cancers don’t develop overnight or out of nowhere. Cancer is largely predictable, the end result of a decades-long process, but just a few simple changes in your daily life can significantly reduce your risk. Here are 31 great tips.

1. Serve sauerkraut at your next picnic. A Finnish study found that the fermentation process involved in making sauerkraut produces several other cancer-fighting compounds, including ITCs, indoles, and sulforaphane. To reduce the sodium content, rinse canned or jarred sauerkraut before eating. 2. Eat your fill of broccoli, but steam it rather than microwaving it. Broccoli is a cancer-preventing superfood, one you should eat frequently. But take note: A Spanish study found that microwaving broccoli destroys 97 percent of the vegetable’s cancer-protective flavonoids. So steam it, eat it raw as a snack, or add it to soups and salads.

Yet another reason why eating your veggies, particularly broccoli, is so good for you. Research has identified a compound in broccoli that can block a defective gene that is related to the growth of cancer tumors. In other words one of the benefits of broccoli is it can effectively slow cancer growth.

Earlier work has shown the cancer fighting potential in this crunchy, leafy green as well as its veggie cousins cauliflower and watercress. Experts have known for some time that these foods appear to bring down the risk of some cancers, and that compounds in the veggies can even kill some cancer cells, but how it all worked remained a mystery. Until now.

A new study has identified compounds known as isothiocyanates (ITCs) in the cruciferous vegetable family including broccoli, that appear to block what’s known as mutant p53 genes that are related to cancer growth. This gene is a tumor suppressor and seems to play a big part in helping cells stay healthy and safe from cancer, but when should this gene become damaged (or mutates) it can’t provide this protection. Although science and technology has developed tremendously, the number of victims prone to prostate cancer is on rise. The lack of awareness and knowledge about the disease is the main cause for the increase in number of victims succumbing to this disease in recent time. Even younger men are affected with this stealth killer. There are many causes for the disease such as hereditary, gene alteration, environmental effects and so on, but the main cause of the disease is still unknown.

Early symptoms of the disease include increased frequency of urination, low pressure of urine flow, blood stains in urine or semen, fever etc. There are so many treatment options for the disease, but the treatments bring adverse side effects to the body along with side effects of the disease.
