Cancer of any kind is very dangerous to the human body. For that matter, its very mention brings down shivers in a person’s body, and people start to feel worried and tensed. There are some kinds of cancers that are general, such as lung cancer, liver cancer etc. However, there are certain gender specific types of cancers too such as the Breast Cancer which is common in women. In men, one of the most common kinds of cancer is the Prostrate Cancer. Prostrate is actually a male gland which is situated right under the bladder. According to statistics, 1 out of every 6 men in the United States suffers from this kind of cancer.

Like all diseases and illnesses, early detection in Prostate Cancer also helps to prevent the situation from worsening. Most of the times, people do not have full knowledge about the symptoms of the cancer, and thus, they are not even aware of the fact that they are suffering from a particular kind of cancer, and for that matter, any kind of disease. Some of the most common symptoms of prostrate cancer include problem in urination, which includes trouble in its passing or experiencing any kind of pain; blood in the urine or a very weak flow of the urine; pain in lower back, hips, thighs, abdominal area or near the penis. Sometimes, even some kind of unexpected sudden weight loss is also considered to be one of the symptoms of prostrate cancer.

Many prostate cancer patients have also said that they experience more urination during night time as compared to the rest of the day. The sexual performance also gets affected, and men also suffer from problems in ejaculation.

Routine checkups under all these circumstances are very important. While prostate cancer is at its initial stages, doctors may not be able to diagnose it, because the symptoms are such that they really don’t indicate towards one particular disease. This is why early detection via regular checkups becomes important so that the doctor can effectively judge the progressing state of the cancer.

Also, prostate cancer when worsens tends to spread to other parts of the body, and at times to the whole lymphatic system. Obviously, the spread of this kind of a tumor brings with it added problems and symptoms which again need a lot of care and attention. One of the most common problems that occur in such situations is that of bone pain. The entire spine and pelvic bone experience problems which become worse with time.

As soon as you experience any such symptoms, you should neglect or ignore them and should get a check up done immediately. Doctors will then be able to judge the severity of the situation in a proper manner to see what kind of treatment suits best. It is best to avoid the situation from worsening as the effectiveness of treatments fails to work when the situation has become very worse. Early stages can still be worked upon.

Cancer is one of the most common fatal diseases known to man, and living with cancer can be really stressful. Cancer sufferers have to go through bouts of chemotherapy or other types of treatment to remove their cancer. Cancer treatments usually result in side effects such as fatigue, deficiency of immune system, and hair loss. All these can increase the stress level of cancer sufferers as well as survivors, which in turn will slow down their recovery process.

There are ways to counter the adverse effects of cancer treatment, and one of them is by practicing Laughter Yoga. Laughter Yoga is a technique developed by Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor from Mumbai, India. This unique exercise technique combines laughter exercises, created and developed by Dr. Kataria himself, and the ancient art of yogic breathing.

It is said that laughter is the best medicine, and it is not just some nonsense. Studies and researches indicate that laughter helps boost our immune system, therefore maintaining our health and well being. Dr. Kataria claims that laughter helps our lungs take in more O2 and expel more CO2 as well as other impurities than when we breathe normally. This leads to a better distribution of O2 in our blood system thus improving our blood circulation. Laughter also increases the production of endorphins – hormones that make us feel good or happy – in our body.

So how does this kind of Yoga benefit cancer sufferers? Regular Laughter Yoga can help boost their immune system of cancer sufferers and survivors and also decrease their stress level. The combination of Laughter Yoga and conventional cancer treatment can help fight cancer more efficiently. Laughter Yoga can also help cancer survivors regain their energy and improve their recovery process.

Laughter Yoga can also help cancer prevention for non-cancer sufferers. Cancer is caused by – among many contributing factors – lack of exercise and stress. Conventional exercise routines can take up some time and nowadays people are too busy and just don’t have much spare time. Dr. Kataria claims that 15 minutes of laughter exercises is equivalent to 30 minutes of cardio exercise. So why waste 30 minutes in the gym when you can laugh as much as you like for 15 minutes inside the comforts of your own house? Regular laughter exercises can help ward off stress hence preventing the cancer from occurring. Most importantly, Laughter Yoga is free of charge! You don’t have to invest in any sporting equipments, and you don’t have to pay a membership fee.

So what are you waiting for? Get to know Laughter Yoga now!

Cancer is one of the deadliest sicknesses everyone fears. Not only will the person experience a painful death but also a tragic ending to all your savings. That is why it is very important to have knowledge about the different signs and symptoms of certain cancers so that at an early stage you can still be able to overcome it and no longer have to go through painful medications and treatments. I have listed below some of the common signs and symptoms to help curious people like you.

1. Fever – This is on of the common signs but mostly occurs after the cancer has spread from its origin. The majority of cancer patients will experience fever at some point of time and makes it more difficult for the immune system to fight the infection. Fever is one of the early signs of certain cancers like blood cancer.

2. Strange weight loss – Those who have cancer will experience a sudden loss in weight for no reason. This is called “unexplained weight loss”. This is usually the first sign of cancer and mostly happens with cancers of the lung, stomach or pancreas.

3. Permanent Sores – This is visible to certain cancers like skin cancer wherein your sores keep on bleeding. This should be treated immediately, especially with smokers and drinkers.

4. Abnormal Discharge – Unusual bleeding on certain parts of the body may also be signs of early cancer. This may affect the different parts of the body like blood in the phlegm that constitutes to lung cancer or blood in the stool that may be a symptom of colon cancer.

5. Thickening of Certain Body Parts – Majority of cancers can be seen through the skin. The thickening of the skin commonly happens in the breasts, lymph nodes, testicles and body tissues.

6. Swallowing Difficulties – This is where the person undergoes troubles in swallowing and digesting the food that they eat. This may possibly lead to cancer of esophagus.

It is very hard to battle against cancer because it does not only affect your body but also your mind and emotions. That’s why presence of mind is indeed needed to be able to surpass this sickness. There are also a lot of precautionary methods you can do to avoid having cancer like having a regular check up with your doctor so that you can monitor your health. Another best thing to do is to have insurance. There are many of health insurance companies in the neighbourhood today who are willing to offer and help us get the best benefits that we will need in order to have a more economical way of treating our medications and health benefits.

There was a wealthy lady who came to us for help. For her diet, we advised that she took large amounts of natural fruit juices and vegetables. She reasoned cleaning the juice maker and utensils would involve too much work; thus she would prefer to take fruit juice concentrates instead – that would make life easier. Indeed, this is an unfortunate attitude. For a wealthy person, money comes rolling into the bank account rather easily without the person having to think or do much. This is line with money. But this is not going to be true with health. If you are not prepared to invest your time and effort into building your health, nobody else can do that for you. There is no short cut or easy way to good health. You owe it to yourself to eat rightly and build a healthy body.

We fully understand many people have an opinion similar to this wealthy lady’s. Progress and commercialization give birth to an instant noodles society. Everyone wants the easy. Everything is pre-packed, pre-washed, pre-cut, pre-cooked etc. What you need to do these days is just bite, chew and swallow. There is not much else to do nor a need to think too much! Is this the ultimate goal of a modern lifestyle?

In this world, there are numerous kinds of pills and supplements that are supposed to promote health. They are convenient to take. Just pop them into the mouth – but, do you think you feel great and healthy?

Americans are good at taking pills. They spend approximately $3 billion each year on vitamins and supplements. Perhaps Americans will realize that taking a tablet, be it an old-fashioned vitamin or a fancy new photochemical, instead of fruits and vegetables, is nutritional madness. In this country, selling them is also good business.

Cancer patients often ask if they should take these supplements. We prefer that they take natural food products rather than synthetic pills and supplements. Of course, in a situation where there is no natural food source, these supplements may be the better of bad choices.

The following are reasons why synthetic supplements are no substitutes for natural food:

• Natural food contains live, vital organic elements. What is sold in the can or container is dead food because it has been subjected to various processing procedures.

• The processing of pills and supplements entails addition of chemicals – preservatives, binding agents, sugars, starch, coloring, etc. These include, for example, sodium benzoate, benzoic acid, sodium nitrate, BHA and BHT.

• Many people have the impression that by popping in pills, they are supplying the body with the equivalent nutrients.

It is not as simple as that! Take for example, calcium pills. The calcium needs to be in the organic or protein-bound form as well as in correct balance with other minerals before the body can utilize this mineral.

• Pills and supplements are man-made. What goes into their production is limited by the human mind. You only put in the ingredients to the extent that you know them. Unfortunately, there are thousands more substances in plants that are unknown to science and are yet to be discovered.

• Taking pills may not only be ineffective but can also be dangerous at times. For example, if you take five times more Vitamin D than the recommended daily allowance, liver damage can result. In 1984, the US National Academy of Science published a study that showed that elderly Californians who took mega closes of Vitamin E died two to three times faster than those who took no supplements. Iron is a double-edged sword. Taken in moderate amounts and in a form that is leashed to proteins, it is an essential element for metabolism and growth, hut. it is toxic when taken in the unleashed form. Studies even show that high amounts of iron stored in the body increase its susceptibility to cancers and heart attacks.

On the other hand, food from plant sources is nutritious because of the following reasons:

• It can balance the body, regulating and helping the glands to function normally Good health can only be achieved if there is balance and harmony of the in and pang energies in the body. Taking correct plant food can help the body achieve and maintain this balance and harmony. On the other hand, purified chemicals, although derived from plant resources, diminish its ability to do so.

• It has a cleansing effect The body naturally accumulates toxins from the by-products of food that we eat, from chemicals in food, etc. If these are not cleansed periodically, they can have detrimental effects on the cells, tissues and organs. Plant food allows the body to rid itself of such harmful toxins.

• it is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals Studies have shown that nutrients derived from wholesome food are far superior to the isolated and concentrated nutrients said to derive from plant materials.

Wholesome plant food contains an abundant supply of phytochemicals – this was unknown to scientists earlier on. For example, sulforaphane, which is found in broccoli, inhibits laboratory animals from contracting cancer. It works by promoting enzymes that detoxify carcinogens. Genistein, found in soybeans, is shown to help prevent cancer from spreading throughout the body.

• It nourishes the immune system Environmental pollutants, the rampant use of antibiotics, consumption of food containing preservative and chemicals, poor nutrition, etc. can suppress the immune system. This makes us prone to disease attacks. The immune system depends on the diet for strength and proper functioning.

Cancer brings many challenges into the lives of your patients…

Treatment options…

Disruption of normal activities…

Fear, anxiety and depression…

When treating your cancer and post chemotherapy peripheral neuropathy patients, it’s easy to become focused on just the disease itself and the symptoms. But don’t overlook their emotional and psychological issues. These can be as debilitating as the disease itself and seriously affect treatment outcomes if not addressed.

Depression caused by chronic pain and frustration can derail an otherwise successful course of treatment.

When treating your cancer patients, strive to become a one stop shop for addressing not only their post chemotherapy peripheral neuropathy and other physical side effects from treatment, but also a great resource for supportive services and information that can provide a tremendous benefit to your cancer patients.

Help them address some of the serious obstacles to successful treatment that most health care professionals don’t think about.

Patient Information Resources

Make your office the one place your cancer patients know they can go to for current patient information and education about cancer treatment options, specific types of cancer, long and short term side effects of their chosen course of treatment. When preparing your patient information materials, include education on cancer diagnosis, treatment, clinical trials, treatment side effects from chemotherapy or radiation and questions they should ask their doctors. Provide them with a list of local resources that are available to assist them with the challenges they face as a cancer patient.

Support for Lifestyle Changes

A cancer diagnosis can mean serious lifestyle changes for your cancer patients. Smokers will probably have to quit smoking; athletes will have to curtail some of their physical activity; patients who live alone may have to stay with family members while undergoing treatment. All of these changes can lead to serious emotional issues. Provide counseling to your cancer and post chemotherapy neuropathy patients on dealing with these lifestyle changes proactively. Provide tips on what they should expect and the best ways to handle these short term challenges.

Don’t Be Afraid to Talk About Money

For cancer patients with no insurance or even less than adequate insurance, a cancer diagnosis can be especially devastating. They may forego necessary prescriptions or even skip appointments. When trying to pay for their cancer treatment, they may find it difficult to even pay for the most basic necessities of life. Become familiar with programs in your area that can assist your cancer patients with paying for medications, providing home health assistance, or even services that can help them with transportation to and from their health care providers.

Any assistance will help. Fighting cancer is hard enough without the added worry of financial issues. Just knowing that there are resources available to help might ward off the serious depression that can make recovery that much more difficult.

Keeping Track of Medical Information2

When a patient is undergoing chemotherapy, radiation or other treatment for cancer, they have mountains of information to keep track of. They need to monitor when to take their medication, how to take it, keep up with medical appointments, monitor their symptoms, and make note of any and all side effects their experience. They need to keep a written record of everything. Provide them with a record book or specific forms to make it easier for them to write everything down and keep it in one place. It will not only make it easier for your cancer patient to manage their medical information, it will make it much easier for you just having all their notes together in one place.

By providing all these additional support services to your cancer and post chemotherapy peripheral neuropathy patients, your practice will become their go to health care provider for information and support. Two things that they desperately need and will greatly appreciate.

When you are ready to provide these services, let them know you’re there to help them.

THURSDAY, Jan. 20 (HealthDay News) — The rate of depression among cancer patients may be lower than previously believed, a new study indicates.

An international team of researchers analyzed 94 studies involving more than 14,000 patients and found that about one-sixth of cancer patients suffer depression and about one-third have a more widely defined mood disorder.

Only modest rates of depression and anxiety occurred in cancer patients in the first five years after diagnosis, which suggests that depression is not inevitable in these patients, the researchers said.

Only when it was combined with other mood disorders was depression common, occurring in 30 percent of hospitalized cancer patients.

The study is published online Jan. 19 in The Lancet Oncology.

Rates of depression and anxiety were not significantly different between patients receiving palliative care (care designed to ease pain and increase comfort in patients with terminal cancer) or non-palliative care (care designed to fight the cancer while easing symptoms). This suggests that the effects that differences in cancer care settings and possibly cancer stage have on depression may have been previously overemphasized, the researchers said in a journal news release.

They also concluded that cancer patients’ age and sex do not influence their risk of depression.

“Although these rates (of depression) are modest, this group of patients should not be overlooked. Improvements in survival and high prevalence of most cancers actually increase rates of depression, amounting to what we estimate to be 340,000 people in the UK and 2 million in the USA with major depression and cancer at any time,” noted the researchers in the release.

“Our study shows that depression alone is not as common as previously thought in cancer settings, occurring in one in six patients, about the same as the rate seen in primary care settings. Although depression remains an important and overlooked complication of cancer, clinicians must also be vigilant for other related emotional problems such as anxiety, adjustment disorder or simply any form of significant distress,” concluded the researchers, who stressed that “there is still an urgent need” for screening programs to detect depression, anxiety and mood disorders among cancer patients.

THURSDAY, Jan. 20 (HealthDay News) — Having both breast cancer and diabetes greatly increases the chances of dying, new research shows.

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis, or pooled analysis, of previously published studies that looked at how breast cancer patients with diabetes fared.

Six of seven studies found pre-existing diabetes was associated with significantly higher long-term, all-cause mortality. Specifically, the studies showed breast cancer patients with diabetes were nearly 50 percent more likely to die than those who didn’t have diabetes.

But much remains unknown, the study authors said, noting that it was premature to conclude that diabetes prevention or improved blood glucose control would lead to a better prognosis. The data didn’t look at the specific causes of death, nor does the research establish whether having diabetes actually caused more breast cancer deaths.

“It’s basically a signal that there may be a stronger association between diabetes and breast cancer mortality than we have appreciated,” said lead study author Dr. Kimberly Peairs, an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. “The next step is to determine if there is causality between diabetes and breast cancer mortality.”

The study, supported by grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, is published in the January issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The reason why breast cancer patients with diabetes are more likely to do poorly isn’t known, but several studies in the meta-analysis offer some clues.

One study, for example, found that women with type 2 diabetes tended to have their breast cancer diagnosed later than those without diabetes.

Women with pre-existing diabetes may also be sicker overall than women without diabetes. That may make them less able to handle the harsh chemotherapy drugs, or may prompt doctors to treat their cancer less aggressively because of concerns about their overall health, Peairs said.

One study the team reviewed showed that women with diabetes had more adverse events from chemotherapy, while another demonstrated that women with diabetes tended to receive less aggressive treatment, Peairs said.

There could also be a biological cause for the increased mortality risk. High levels of insulin may stimulate tumor growth, said Dr. Julia Smith, director of the breast cancer screening and prevention program at NYU Cancer Institute.

In people with type 2 diabetes, the cells become resistant to insulin, leading to rising blood sugar levels as well as more insulin circulating throughout the body.

“Insulin regulation, obesity and diabetes [are] critical in general health,” Smith said. “I can’t conclude that controlling insulin will modify anything about breast cancer, but it tells us we should be looking in those areas and there may be something very important.”

About 24 million U.S. residents, or 8 percent of the adult population, had diabetes in 2007, according to background information in the article. Prior research also shows that diabetics are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Women should seek to maintain a body mass index of about 25, limit consumption of animal fats, and exercise to prevent diabetes and reduce cancer risk, Smith said.

And women who already have diabetes should make sure they are controlling it, while oncologists and physicians treating patients with diabetes should make sure they are coordinating care, Peairs noted.

For most cancer patients radiation therapy is their last chance to beat cancer. Unfortunately a number of people will attempt killing themselves during or just after their radiation therapy. For some this is due to the pain they have to endure during the radiation therapy regimen…and for others it’s due to radiation therapy long term effects like sterility that is caused by the radiation treatment (mostly affects those who have cancer in parts of the body near their reproductive organs). But the biggest risk group for suicide attempts, are those who go through radiation therapy and fail to get cured, since they are the most hopeless group.

People who have a severe medical condition like cancer are a major risk group for suicide. In fact cancer patients are 2x more likely to commit suicide compared to the general population. However it is important to note that by all factors, this number is most likely underestimated due to the fact that a high number of cancer related suicides go unreported. Pay extra attention to those who have oral, pharyngeal and lung cancers, since these groups are the most at risk. Suicide in cancer patients is mostly due to the fact that those suffering from cancer are usually dealing with massive depression.

Some may think that suicide is a rare occurrence, but it’s quite the opposite. In United States alone, there are more than 1.1 million suicide attempts every year. In fact, 1 out of 14 people in America will know someone who’ll commit suicide this year. Worldwide the numbers can reach as high as 20 million suicide attempts per year. To put this in terms that are easier to comprehend, that is more or less the entire population of Australia attempting suicide every year. So as you can see, suicide is a serious threat and should be watched out for.

If you know someone going through radiation therapy or someone who has cancer…it’s important to learn all the possible suicide warning signs, so that you can help save the life of the person when they start feeling suicidal. If you are the person with cancer, it’s important to provide a suicide warning signs guide to someone with whom you interact on a daily basis, so that they can help save your life when you start feeling hopeless. Remember advancement in cancer research happens every day, killing yourself when the cure might be around the corner, is the last thing you should do.

February 15 is celebrated as the International Child Cancer Day, to remind us to the increasing cases of child cancer. It is estimated that 2-4% of all cancer attacking children. Although this number seems small, but cancer contribute 10% of deaths in children. According to data in 2007, in Indonesia it was found about 4100 new child cancer patients each year
Not yet known exactly what causes cancer in children. Cancer that attacks the baby since birth, is thought that the cause is cell growth aberration due to the genetic defects in uteri. In older children, it is thought the cause is environmental factors and unhealthy children food and it may be due to radiation or viral infection or a combination of genetic, environmental, radiation, and infections.
The most common cancer found in children is blood cancer or leukemia (25-30%), followed by retinoblastoma (cancer of the retina of the eye), lymphoma (lymph node cancer), neuroblastoma (nerve cancer), kidney cancer (Wilms tumor), rabdomiosarcoma (striated muscle cancer), and osteosarcoma (bone cancer).
Like cancer attacking adults, cancer in children can be cured if found in early stages. But early cancer detection is not easy in children, because children cannot understand and tell the symptoms felt. Therefore the role of the people around them is very important in detecting the cancer symptoms.
According to some sources, cancer symptoms in children include:
a. Blood Cancer (Leukemia)
The Symptoms often found in leukemia among others are, pale face, listless, weak, uncertain fever and not cured by antibiotics, bleeding with unclear why the surface of the skin looks blue-black bruises but did not knock, limb pain (bone), swollen stomach, enlarged lymph nodes.

b. Brain Cancer
The Symptoms are headache, more and more severe, accompanied with nausea to vomiting, which are sprayed under the pressure of the increases in the head. Can also be accompanied with talk disturbances, vision disturbances, balance disturbances, seizures, decreased consciousness, and even behavioral changes can occur. The special feature on the baby is top of his head is protruding.
c. Retina Eye Cancer (Retinoblastoma)
This cancer most attacks baby aged six months – two years. The Symptom is a white speck in the middle of the eye that seemed to shine when in light (like a cat’s eye). Other symptoms are vision impaired, suddenly crossed, and protruding eyeballs on next stage.

d. Lymph node cancer (malignant lymphoma)
This cancer most attacks children aged 5-7 years. The Symptoms are progressive swelling of lymph-nodes in the neck, armpit, and intestines, without inflammation and pain. When the swelling arises in the lymph nodes in the intestines, it can cause blockage of the intestine with an abdominal pain, vomiting, unable to defecate, and fever. When grows in the chest area, can encourage or suppress the airways, so that the patient feel shortness of breath and blue face. In addition, children become weak, listless, and decreased appetite.
e. Nerve cancer (Neuroblastoma)
Sympathetic nerve cancer can occur in various parts of the body. In children, most often occurs near the kidneys, in the waist area, in the neck or chest cavity, and eyes. When the cancer is in eye, can make eyeballs protruding and the eyelids swollen and blue, or down eyelids, and pupils dilated. When in the spine, it can suppress spinal cord and results rapid paralysis. Its spread of the bone can cause fractures without reason, without pain, so people suddenly limp. Another symptom is lumps appear on head, or abdomen becomes enlarge and hard.
f. Kidney Cancer (Nefroblastoma)
Nefroblastoma often called Wilms’ tumor is the most attacking children aged 3-4 years, but can also attack the newborn. The symptoms showed by bloody urine, discomfort in the stomach, and when old enough stomach is enlarged and palpable hard.
g. Muscle Cancer (Rabdomiosarcoma)
This cancer can attack any muscles. In children, it usually attack head, neck, bladder, prostate, and vagina. The Symptoms depend on location generated. In the eye socket, may causes eyes protruding and a lump in eyes. In the ear, it causes pain or bleeding from the ear hole. In the urinary tract, causes urinary disorders. If attacks the limb striated muscle, can cause swelling.
h. Bone cancer (Osteosarcoma)
Osteosarcoma usually attacks children aged 10-20 years. It can attack any part of the bone, but the most found is in the legs, arms, and hips. Usually marked with pain and swelling of the bone. Sometimes preceded with crunch, like fall with unclear cause.
If you find symptoms as mentioned above in your infants and children, consult your doctor immediately. The treatment is basically the same with adults, the combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and bone marrow transplant.
Meanwhile, prevention efforts that can be done is, pregnant mothers should avoid radiation, pollution and cigarette smoke, always eat healthy foods and avoid foods that contain chemical ingredients added, reduce the consumption of fat, and get the children to live healthy, healthy eating, protected from pollution.
