When diagnosed with something as deadly as cancer, fertility may not be the immediate concern. However, once cancer is cured and life goes on, the harmful effects of the treatment undergone may show up in the form of impaired fertility.

Ironically, fertility enhancing treatments also seem to have the same effect on cancer, by increasing the risk of cancer in women who undergo fertility treatment.

Treatment for infertility almost always involves intake of fertility drugs, but it appears by improving fertility and the chances of a woman to conceive, the fertility drugs may simultaneously be increasing the risk of cancer. The risk of uterine cancer in particular is seen to increase.

Ovulation-inducing drugs are common in treatment of infertility. The effects of these drugs on the health of the women who use them have not been verified yet. Continue reading ‘Cancer Risk Increased by Intake of Fertility Drugs’ »

Most people think about sexually transmitted diseases whenever they assess the risks of oral sex, but new studies show that there may be much more to fear than that. Scientists in the United States have recently determined that there may be a possible link between oral sex and cancer risk in the oral cavity, providing a whole new reason to promote sexual education and awareness. The studies indicate that this risk mainly rises for white men, but there are possibilities of issues across the board. This is a serious problem that is currently under serious investigation.

Oral cancer cases have grown 225% from 1974 to 2007, and the main factor that scientists could link to the new victims is the number of sex partners involved in oral practices they had prior to developing cancer. Oral sex allows for the passing of the human papillomavirus, or HPV. This can lead to the onset of many common STDs, as well as many forms of vaginal, penile, anal, or oral cancers. 40 of the 150 different types of HPV can be passed through sexual intercourse in one way or another, so the spreading of oral ractices and cancel risk go hand in hand. Colorectal cancer or colon cancer affects both men and women and is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Colorectal cancer is one of the most treatable and curable forms of cancer there is. Early detection saves lives. Sadly, information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cite 40% of adults in the target age range (50 years or older) have never had appropriate screening tests. The American Cancer Society (ACS) lists several strategies* for reducing your risk of cancer. Having regular check-ups and cancer-screening tests is one of the suggested ways to take more control of your health.

Regular screenings are recommended for men and women age 50 years or older. That age benchmark may be lower if there’s a family history of colon cancer or you have risk factors. Also the frequency of screenings is dependent on your personal history and/or screening results. Check for colorectal cancer risk factors on the CDC or ACS website (links below).

Early detection saves lives. Screening for colorectal cancer may require more preparation and can be more invasive than say a mammogram, but if found early and treated, there’s a 90% five-year survival rate. Be proactive by doing all you can to minimize your chance of developing cancer and add more anti-cancer insurance by having the appropriate check-ups and screening tests.
