February 15 is celebrated as the International Child Cancer Day, to remind us to the increasing cases of child cancer. It is estimated that 2-4% of all cancer attacking children. Although this number seems small, but cancer contribute 10% of deaths in children. According to data in 2007, in Indonesia it was found about 4100 new child cancer patients each year
Not yet known exactly what causes cancer in children. Cancer that attacks the baby since birth, is thought that the cause is cell growth aberration due to the genetic defects in uteri. In older children, it is thought the cause is environmental factors and unhealthy children food and it may be due to radiation or viral infection or a combination of genetic, environmental, radiation, and infections.
The most common cancer found in children is blood cancer or leukemia (25-30%), followed by retinoblastoma (cancer of the retina of the eye), lymphoma (lymph node cancer), neuroblastoma (nerve cancer), kidney cancer (Wilms tumor), rabdomiosarcoma (striated muscle cancer), and osteosarcoma (bone cancer).
Like cancer attacking adults, cancer in children can be cured if found in early stages. But early cancer detection is not easy in children, because children cannot understand and tell the symptoms felt. Therefore the role of the people around them is very important in detecting the cancer symptoms. (more…)

Colon cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in the colon and the formation of tumors from these cells. Despite the presence of polyps in the human large intestine, presentation of colon cancer symptoms at an early stage is very low. In some cases, it may not even manifest symptoms. Today, colon cancer is the second leading malignancy in the United States and the fourth worldwide. The combination of these facts gives rise to the importance of colon screening methods aimed at determining early stages of colon cancer.
There are a number of screening methods available for colon cancer detection. These tests are done alone or in combination with other tests in order to distinguish colon cancer from other intestinal diseases. Hereunder is a list of these screening and detection procedures. (more…)
Routine tests like pap smears and mammograms are important, but don’t rely on tests alone to protect you from cancer. It’s just as important to listen to your body and notice anything that’s different, odd, or unexplainable. You don’t want to join the ranks of cancer patients who realize too late that symptoms they’d noticed for a long time could have sounded the alarm earlier, when cancer was easier to cure.
1. Wheezing or shortness of breath One of the first signs lung cancer patients remember noticing when they look back is the inability to catch their breath. “I couldn’t even walk across the yard without wheezing; I thought I had asthma, but how come I didn’t have it before?” is how one woman described it.
2. Chronic cough or chest pain Several types of cancer, including leukemia and lung tumors, can cause symptoms that mimic a bad cough or bronchitis. One way to tell the difference: The problems persist, or go away and come back again in a repeating cycle. Some lung cancer patients report chest pain that extends up into the shoulder or down the arm. (more…)
