“Summer is the time when one sheds one’s tensions with one’s clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.”

Now that is a quote from Ada Louise Huxtable and it sure is true. For many people, summer is the time to go back to their childhood, to relieve themselves of the stress that they have gone through for the past seasons, and to just bask in what nature has to offer. This is the time when all cares are usually set aside and it is the season to enjoy. After all, this is the best part of the year when you can do pretty much everything and it is the time when you can spend a lot of time with loved ones and family. That is the beauty of summer.

This is the time that people usually get out of their houses and just take in the rays of the sun. But if you just do not know, having too much sun on your skin can not be that good. See, it can lead to skin cancer and this is why you should know just what to do to protect your skin against such a condition.

Experts suggest that if you really want to take advantage of the sun this summer, you should know what to avoid. For example, you can try to stay out of the hot rays during the hot hours of each day. The hot hours start at ten in the morning to around four in the afternoon. The rest of the day, you can enjoy the sun. Now if you cannot help but be out there, then make sure that you put on sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you venture outside. Make sure to put on additional sunscreen after around two to three hours. If you are doing activities that make you sweat or maybe you are swimming, then reapply after every hour.

The stronger the SPF that you find on your sunblock, the better that it would be for your skin. Make sure that you cover every inch of your body that will be exposed to the sun. You do not want to waste all that facial lotion and the facial creams you put on your face to keep it youthful just because you wanted to take advantage of the outdoors this summer.

Gerald Shaw is a voracious reader. Maybe that’s why he writes so well.

The odds (to use a wagering term) of developing prostate cancer are fairly high for men in the United States of America. One man in thirty five will die of cancer of the prostate. One out of every six men will be affected by cancer of the prostate during their life time. You can improve those odds.

Scientific studies have shown that increasing the intake of Omega 3 fatty acids can change these odds dramatically. This is even so for men who are genetically more likely to develop prostate cancer.

The studies conducted correlated the consumption of food types to the occurrence of prostate cancer and the conclusions were that men who ate more fish than meat were less likely to develop cancer of the prostate. Men who ate fish rich in Omega 3 fats between one and three times a month were more than thirty percent less likely to develop cancer of the prostate. This percentage was increased to over fifty percent when Omega 3 rich fish were eaten at least once a week.

Men who have a variant of the COX-2 gene are known to be more likely to develop prostate cancer. The studies showed that men who ate fish rich in Omega 3 fats were five times less likely to develop cancer of the prostate than men who ate no such fish. Those are dramatic changes to the odds.

For men who have already been diagnosed with cancer of the prostate increasing the intake of Omega 3 fats can help fight the cancer and extend the life expectancy. Now that’s changing the odds in your favor.

Other studies have shown that the Omega 3 fats DHA and EPA can stop the growth of cancer cells. The balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids affects the growth of cancer cells. Reducing or eliminating foods containing Omega 6 fatty acids and increasing the intake of Omega 3 fats can slow or stop the continued development of cancer of the prostate.

Dark oily fish are one of the richest sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. Fish such as tuna, salmon and mackerel are among the most common sources of these fatty acids. Flax oil and walnuts are an alternative vegetarian source.

Omega 3 fish oil capsules are a convenient and safe way of increasing your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids. They are pure and concentrated and easy to take.

These capsules are manufactured from raw fish oil using a process known as stripping or micro distillation. This process eliminates impurities such as methyl mercury. The end product is pure and rich in the essential Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA.

By taking Omega 3 fish oil capsules you can reduce your chances of developing prostate cancer.

Change the odds in your favor today.

Once called a silent killer of women, ovarian cancer was considered to be symptom free up to the point that the cancerous growths had reach critical mass and most likely already spread to other organs. Diagnosis would then be made because of symptoms the other organ manifests, in turn leading doctors to the source of the problem, often times too late for many sufferers to undergo successful treatment.

Nevertheless, in recent years experts and researchers have determined that when comparing case studies of various patients presenting with ovarian cancer, across the board there appeared to be a general agreement about similar feelings of discomfort that took place well before the diagnosis. This has caused the medical industry to rectify its opinion of ovarian cancer and it is no longer considered a symptom free illness, but instead one that has symptoms so subtle that unless the patient knows what to look for, they are likely missed or attributed to other problems.

1. There is frequent or recurring pain in the abdomen. Initially many respondents of the studies had suggested that it felt a bit like constipation, bloating, or gas pains, but because the pains lasted so much longer than the average bout of constipation, it soon became obvious that there was more going on than indigestion.

2. It could be ovarian cancer if you feel abdominal bloating. Sure, it might be the food you ate or the period that is just around the corner, but if it continues for more than a week, something might be amiss.

3. Frequent urination is another symptom but sadly is frequently missed since many a woman is religiously precise in drinking her water and frequent urination is considered par for the course.

So, Could it be irritable bowel syndrome? Could it be ovarian cancer? Could it be the onset of another disease or condition that imitates the same symptoms? The “what if” questions may continue non stop, yet unless a woman is willing to acknowledge the warning signs her body is giving off, precious little will answer her health related worries and questions. Too often she may think them to be too minor to mention to her doctor or – what makes this disease so dangerous – she will learn to live with them.

Although adaptability is a sought after trait in the theory of evolution, when it comes to detecting the early warning signs of ovarian cancer, it may be a contributing factor to death. Physicians involved in the studies have declared that any of the symptoms individually or in combination with one or both of the others should be grounds for concern and if the symptom persists for one week, heightened attention must be paid. If two weeks go by and the symptoms persist, a doctor’s appointment must be scheduled for the first available time slot and if three weeks pass and the symptoms continue, it is time to set up an appointment with a specialist.

Could it be ovarian cancer? Maybe; either way, you owe it to yourself and those who love you to find out for sure.

My name is Juliet Taylor, and I decided to create the website http://www.bodytalk1on1.com when I discovered the many problems that I have developed in my body, that many other people themselves are faced with, but become so trouble because of lack of knowledge about that condition. So, I decide to create this website to inform people on different types of conditions that affects our body. People say what you don’t know won’t hurt you, but I beg to differ, because know that you have a condition in the development of it’s early stage will make a ton of difference.

Skin is the final layer and largest organ of our human system. Skin is made up of multiple layers of mesoderm tissues which protect our muscles, ligaments, bones and other internal organs lying underneath. Human skin is a thin layer which acts as a protecting agent from infections and pathogens, excessive water loss, and insulation. It regulates and maintains the human body temperature without any fluctuations.

Skin helps in sensation, synthesis, storage of vitamin D and vitamin B which helps in cell growth and reproduction, secretion of sweat. For breathing it absorbs small amount of oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. There are various skin types like oily, dry, normal, combination skin.

Skin is primarily composed of three layers. Namely epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. Epidermis is the outer layer which consists of basal and squamous cells. Melanocyte is a cell in the basal layer of epidermis. This produces melanin under the control of the melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It gives pigmentation to the skin which causes skin tanning. It also protects the deeper layer of the skin from exposure to UV light rays. The dermis which lies below the epidermis consists of blood vessels, connective tissues, hair follicles and the sweat glands.

The subcutaneous layer which is the deepest layer of the skin contains fat cells. Uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells in any layer of the skin ultimately leads to skin cancer. There are 3 common forms of skin cancer and these 3 are classified according to the types of cells affected. The most common form of skin cancer is called as basal cell carcinoma.

This is not a serious one but it requires treatment. This is quite common in the areas which are exposed to sunlight. However this doesn’t spread to other cells. Second form is Squamous cell carcinoma which develops in the middle layer of the epidermis. This is quite dangerous and it may lead to death if it is not treated properly. Third one is malignant melanoma which spreads quickly to other cells and causes quick damage. This type of skin cancer is dangerous if not detected and treated early. People with fair skin are at an increased risk for developing this form of cancer.

To prevent skin cancer better avoid exposing your skin to the sunlight between 10.00am to 4.00pm when the rays are at high intensity. In unavoidable conditions apply sunscreen lotions, Comfortable dressings to cover your hands, neck, face and head.

Surgery is the common treatment to overcome skin cancer diseases. However treatment depends on the patient’s age factor, overall health and medical history. Cancer stages also play a vital role in treatment. It takes about 28 to 35 days for the process of producing a new healthy skin.

Prostate cancer is a killer. Cancer of the prostate will kill about three percent of men in the United States of America annually. During their life time sixteen percent of men will experience the effects of cancer of the prostate. It is the second most common cancer, second only to skin cancer. It is also the second deadliest cancer, being second to lung cancer.

Men most prone to prostate cancer are

* Men who carry a variant of the COX-2 gene
* Men with a life style that makes them susceptible to cancer of the prostate.

Genetically affected males can be tested and being aware that they are carrying this gene. They can then take the precautions that will decrease their chances of developing prostate cancer and increasing their life expectancy should they develop cancer of the prostate.

Males who are not genetically prone but who are at risk of cancer of the prostate are those who are overweight, smoke or abuse alcohol. Other lifestyle factors also affect the possibility of developing cancer of the prostate.

Precautions that can be taken by both groups include life style changes such as:

* Reducing weight if overweight.
* Reducing or avoiding alcohol consumption.
* Stopping or reducing smoking.
* Dietary changes are an important precaution

You can and should take action to prevent and reduce the effects of prostate cancer.

Dietary changes have been shown to have a very positive outcome in the fight to prevent cancer of the prostate. These changes can also increase your chances of survival and life expectancy if you have been diagnosed with cancer of the prostate.

Studies into the dietary frequency of men have shown that increasing the amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet can dramatically improve the outlook for avoiding or reducing the effects of prostate cancer. Men who ate fish containing these Omega 3 fats one to three times a month reduced the risk of prostate cancer by thirty six percent over those who ate no fish. Similarly men who ate these fish once a week reduced their risk rate by a whopping fifty seven percent.

In other studies it was found that increased consumption of Omega 3 fats and reducing the consumption of Omega 6 fats could halt the growth of cancer cells in the prostate.

The conclusion then is that men must include oily fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel as a regular part of their diet while also making the other life style changes mentioned above. Where fish are not regularly available or there is a resistance to eating fish Omega 3 fish oil capsules are an excellent alternative.

Omega 3 fish oil capsules are one of the supplements that have been shown to have a positive effect in preventing prostate cancer and extending the life expectancy of those diagnosed with the disease. Manufactured from raw fish oil which is then purified and concentrated using a process called micro distillation, these capsules are free of contaminants such as mercury and rich in the beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. They are convenient to take and cost effective.

Using Omega 3 fish oil capsules is not a quick fix against prostate cancer. Rather it is a long term strategy to avoid and reduce the effects of cancer of the prostate.

Take action today to improve you health and avoid prostate cancer by starting a daily routine of Omega 3 fish oil capsules.

According to the Mayo Clinic, all three types of skin cancer are on the rise. These include squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and the most serious form – melanoma. The good news is that almost all forms are preventable by avoiding sun exposure or other forms for ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It is also true that early detection can result in successful treatment of even the most aggressive types of skin cancers.

So what exactly causes skin cancer?

Cancerous cells are most likely to form on parts of your body that have the most exposure to sun. The most vulnerable areas include your face, lips, scalp, chest, neck, arms, hands and women’ s legs. You might be surprised to learn that cell malignant cells can also develop in areas of your body that are rarely (or never) exposed directly to sunlight. These areas include between your toes, under your toenails or fingernails, the palms of your hands, and the genital area.

The risk of skin cancer is not limited simply to people with light complexions. But when dark skinned people do develop melanoma, they are more likely to experience it in parts of the body not usually considered to be sun-exposed.

There is also no standard time table for cancerous lesions to develop. Depending on the type of cancer, a skin lesion can develop slowly over many years or appear very suddenly.

Warning signs of skin cancer are usually visual. For basal cell carcinoma, you may notice a waxy bump on your face, neck or ears, or a flat brown scar-like lesion on your back or chest. Squamous cell carcinoma usually appears as a firm red nodule, or a flat scaly lesion, on the face, neck, ear, hands or arms.

Melanoma, which is the most deadly form of skin cancer, can develop anywhere on the body – although it is found most frequently on the trunk, head or neck of men and the arms or legs of women. Melanoma can appear as a large brown spot with darker speckles, or a mole that suddenly changes color or size or bleeds. Melanoma can also appears as a small lesion with an irregular border and blue, red, black or white spots. Shiny, firm dome-shaped bumps can also be a warning sign of melanoma, as well as dark lesions on the soles of the feet, palms of the hands, or on the mucous linings of the nose, mouth, anus or vagina.

While not all changes in your skin are malignant, it is best to have your doctor examine any changes that you notice. With early detection, most skin cancer can treated. And with proper sun protection, it can often be avoided altogether.

Barb is an online author who writes on many topics. She is a big believer in keeping a portable sun shade in the car and never leaves home without her EZ Up Sun Shelter

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers that affect men. Just like Breast Cancer is a gender specific cancer affecting women, prostrate is limited to men. However, it is not limited in terms of the number of affected people it has as of now. Statistics show that one man out of every six in the United States is affected by Prostate Cancer. The beginnings of this cancer in men bring with it a variety of problems. Men suffer from various kinds of urination problems. There is excessive urination at night, and sometimes the urine is accompanied with blood. There is also pain during urination. Even sexual performance gets affected and there are problems during ejaculation.

While the detection of the cancer with the help of the symptoms during the initial stages is very useful, delay can cause a lot of problem. If the tumour is allowed to spread in the body for a long time, men can suffer from permanent bone pain in the pelvic area and the spine. The entire lymphatic system too gets damaged and can have severe effects. Therefore, the first and the foremost thing to be kept in mind for prostate cancer is to combat it as early as possible.

Treatments, irrespective of whatever kind they are, will obviously be more effective in the initial stages for the simple fact that the situation is still under control and has not worsened. However beyond that, treatments too at times can fail.

One of the most common treatments of Prostate Cancer is that of Androgen Deprivation, also known as ADT. Therapy under this is done with surgical castration. With the help of this treatment, the body stops producing testosterone. This helps a lot as testosterone gets converted to DHT, which is a cancer stimulant. And since there is reduced testosterone, there is reduction in the spread of the cancer too to its further stages.

Another famous treatment is that of Cryotherapy. This technique is based on the principle of killing cancer cells in the affected areas. There have initially been a lot of debates over the effectiveness of this technique. However it has come back to limelight in the recent times. But then there are risks involved too. With the use of this therapy, life saving chances can be good, but at the cost of sexual dysfunction, and some other complications.

Radical Prostatectomy is another popular treatment. This one is based on the removal of the root cause of the problem itself. Yes, this treatment removes the prostrate gland itself. However, it needs skilled surgeons and professionals. If this treatment is carried out in an improper manner, it can lead to impotence. Therefore, while the chances of ending the cancer with this treatment are high, the risks involved too are very high.

Certain other therapies and treatments such as those of the Radiation are also growing in popularity. The best kind of treatment that suits you will depend on the severity of your case, for which you need to consult a doctor.

When ovarian cancer patients undergo chemotherapy, nausea and vomiting are the most commonly made complaints. Even as the delivery methods of the chemotherapy drugs may vary, by and large nausea is the universally experienced side effect, closely followed by vomiting. What makes this side effect so miserable for patients is the fact that even on an empty stomach the feelings do not subside, and more than one chemotherapy patient may find herself dry heaving repeatedly during and after her chemotherapy treatment.

Since ovarian cancer treatment quite frequently includes chemotherapy, patients and their physicians have been working hard to figure out ways around this side effect.

* On the day of your chemotherapy, physicians recommend that you have an easy to digest breakfast. Dry toast, Jell-o, saltines, or slices of white bread are recommended. Stay away from eggs and anything else that may be considered a full breakfast. Especially of note is that you should avoid anything with a heightened acidity, such as grapefruit or orange juice.
* Bring along some plain crackers and a bottle of water. Listen to your body and its signals! You may be surprised to find that you are craving food in the midst of chemotherapy. Eat one cracker and see how you feel.
* Once you arrive at home, plan on avoiding the smells of spicy foods. In the same way, avoid the smell of drinks as well. Some ovarian cancer patients have reported that the smell of their children’s hot chocolate or their husband’s coffee suddenly brought on a wave of nausea. To this end it is best to spend the first 24 hour period after chemotherapy without strong scents and odors.
* Keep cool when you feel nauseous. Patients have found that having the car window rolled down is essential in keeping actual vomiting at bay and may actually help to relieve nausea. Physicians suggest that the intake of fresh, cool air is instrumental.
* Come prepared for vomiting. This might sound like an odd piece of advise, but ovarian cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and subsequently suffering from severe nausea have reported that the stress over not having a bag readily available should the sick feeling turn into actual vomiting is so stressful that in the end the vomiting appeared to have been induced by the stress and fear of vomiting.

Some patients have experimented with anti emetic drugs and found that they yielded great results. Of course, any time you ingest any kind of medication, vitamin, herbal remedy, or anything else you must discuss it with your physician first! Some over the counter supplements have been known to alter the way chemotherapy drugs work and there is little benefit in undergoing the treatment if the results are not what you have hoped for due to the use of other substances. As a matter of fact, your doctor should be able to provide you with a list of acceptable and not recommended medications and over the counter remedies for the weeks that you are undergoing chemotherapy!

When it comes to reducing your risk of developing colon cancer, there is a lot of good news. This is a type of cancer that usually develops slowly, which means that there is time to take steps to prevent it or at least to detect it before it becomes serious.

One of the best ways to prevent colon cancer is through a healthy diet.

Eat more vegetable and fruits

If you eat three or more servings of vegetables a day, you can lower you risk of developing colon cancer. It is not clear why, but it appears that the folic acid in vegetables helps keep ceels healthy. Generally speaking, a serving is about half a cup of chopped vegetables or a cup of leafy greens.

Fruits and veggies supply a variety of essential vitamins and minerals, and also contain cancer-fighting substances known as phytochemicals.

After convening an expert panel that reviewed hundreds of epidemiological studies on dietary intake of fruits and vegetables, the American Institute of Cancer Research found overwhelming evidence that fruit and vegetable consumption reduces the risk of cancer.

Eat more bread, beans and bananas

Experts recommend eating more of the types of foods that will fill you up, while at the same time, providing a variety of vitamins, minerals, protein, complex carbohydrates and fiber. Such foods include whole grains found in breads, cereals, pasta, and rice; legumes, such as beans and peas; plantains, such as bananas; and roots and tubers, such as sweet potatoes.

Look for foods that have been minimally processed and that contain few refined sugars; such foods are generally the best sources of nutrients and other beneficial substances. For example, whole-grains wheat breadis better than white, and bran cereal is better than cerals with frosting or that taste like cereal.

Eat less red meat

If you have more than one serving of red meat(beef, pork, lamb or venison) per day, you are at increased risk of colon cancer. Meat appears to contain substances that can turn normal cell cancerous. The best way to eat less meat per week is to find substitutes: chicken, fish, pasta or vegetables.

Cook meats safely

The way that meats are cooked is also important. Known or suspected carcinogens are formed when meat or fish is exposed directly to flame or intense heat, as typically happens when food is broiled, roasted, fried or grilled. High temperatures and flames induce chemical reactions as oil and fat drip down, forming new compounds that splatter back up and stick to the surface of the meat. Epidemiological studies have reported that people who frequently eat meats cooked at high temperatures may increase their risk for stomach and colorectal cancers.

Fortunately, this particular cancer risk can be controlled and should be kept in perspective. It is important that foods, and especially meats, be cooked thoroughly to kill any bacterial for people trying to reduce their risk of heart disease, eating broiled or grilled food is often recommended. To reduce your risk of cancer, don’t regularly eat meat that has been overcooked or charred. Eating such foods on an occasional basis won’t greatly increase your risk for stomach and colorectal cancers.

There are other strategies as well. Grill vegetables instead of meat. (Because the vegetables don’t drip fat, cooking them doesn’t create the compounds discussed above.) Choose lean cuts of meat or trim off the fat and skin before cooking. Turn the meat often while cooking, and use tongs or a spatula, which does not puncture the meat.

Choose broiling or grilling, where drippings fall away from the meat and may not splatter up as much, over pan frying-where the meat is in direct contact with both high heat and fat drippings, resulting in the formation of more carcinogens on the meat surface. Or precooked meats by boiling, steaming or microwaving to lessen the amount of time spent grilling.

Limit your intake of cured meats

Processed cold cuts, hams and hotdogs contain nitrites and nitrates as preservatives. Some studies report that diets high in cured meats may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, but others disagree.

So what should you do? The strategy best calculated to reduce your risk of cancer would be to eat cured meats only in moderation. It is unlikely that the occasional hotdog or ham sandwich will materially affect your cancer risk.

Limit your alcohol intake

Alcohol consumption moderately increases the chance of developing colorectal cancer.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia have discovered that the HPV vaccine may be effective in preventing breast cancer, which affects over a million women a year worldwide.

In a new article published in the British Journal of Cancer, the experts reveal that they conducted studies of breast cells and found that there were several strains of HPV present which are known to have a high risk of initiating cancer of the cervix.

A team from UNSW School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, led by visiting professor James Lawson, declared that there was a presence of high-risk HPV in the nuclei of breast cancer epithelial cells in 21 per cent of 14 invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) breast cancer specimens.

IDCs are invasive cancers responsible for up to 80 per cent of all breast cancers and professor Lawson told cancer insurance customers that the results may lead to further large-scale studies being conducted.

UNSW researcher Dr Noel Whitaker, a co-author of the new report, commented: “The finding that high-risk HPV is present in a significant number of breast cancers indicates they may have a causal role in many breast cancers.

“Confirming a cancer-causing role for HPV in some breast cancers establishes the possibility of preventing some breast cancers by vaccination against HPV.”

The new link may also help to clear up confusion about the role which HPV plays in the development of breast cancer.

In order to establish a more accurate result, the healthcare specialists used a technique that avoids cross-contamination which may have affected outcomes and announced that they are working on a new simpler method which will provide faster results.
