People use mouthwash to reduce tendencies of bad breath. Moreover, mouthwash has some properties which kill known bacteria residing in the mouth. It is one effective way to rinse the mouth and therefore, it promotes good oral hygiene. Twenty five percent of the Americans have halitosis, a chronic bad breath. About seventy percent suffers from periodontal disease which includes periodontitis and gingivitis. Therefore majority of the population found the release of mouthwash in the market very helpful. Aside from the mouthwash’s chief task to cleanse the mouth off any accumulating bacteria, it helps with their social activities. There are times bad breath tends to stop people from talking to others. But with the help of mouthwash, people tend to be more confident while interacting with others.

Mouthwash ingredients include thymol, eucalyptol, hexetidine, methyl salicylate, menthol, chlorhexedine gluconate, benzalkolnium chloride, cetylpyridinium chloride, methylparaben, hydrogen peroxide, domiphen bromide, fluoride, enzymes and calcium. There are also water sweeteners such as sorbitol, sucralose, sodium saccharine and xylitol. Some mouthwash has alcohol which takes up to 27% vol. The alcohol content gives an antibacterial effect. According to research, alcohol causes mouth to be dry. It also aggravates the condition of chronic bad breath. It decreases saliva, which naturally makes breath fresh.

A researcher from the Dental Journal of Australia published a report linking mouthwash to oral cancer. It concludes that there is enough proof that alcohol-based mouthwash increases the chance of having an oral cancer. Alcohol based mouthwash has acetaldehyde as its by-product. As Acetaldehyde is produced, it builds up in the oral cavity. The researcher believes it is carcinogenic, thus causing cancer. Continue reading ‘Mouthwash May Lead to Oral Cancer’ »

I wonder why some doctors seem to pronounce the dreaded “you have cancer” on victims of the condition with some degree of “finality” as if that’s the end of the road for them. While certainly most will disagree that doctors seem to enjoy it, who knows – they just might. But whether they enjoy pronouncing it or not, you shouldn’t let the pronouncement be the end of the world for you.

This is because everything the doctors say can’t be guaranteed. If they say you are going to live for only 2 more years, there’s no guarantee of that. They are only supposing. So, don’t let their pronouncement make you lose all hopes of life. If you still have any bit of life in you, then you can still do all you can to fight the condition to a standstill and – wait for it – WIN!

Yes, you read that right. There are lots of prostate cancer survivors and conquerors out there who have successfully defeated the condition. The point is – if they could, you CAN as well. All you have to do is find out what they did to survive the cancer and do the exact same things. You just might get the same results. Don’t just sit alone and wait for death. Stand up and FIGHT and you will be surprised at the results you will get! Continue reading ‘You Have Prostate Cancer, Yes, But That is NOT the End of the World’ »

Age: Everyone can have colon cancer, fifty year old people and older are more vulnerable. Why? As people age, the cells don’t repair damages as well as younger people, and genetic mutations within the colon tissue may cause cells to have excessive growth activity.

Gender: Men and women can develop cancer of the colon, but men are a little more likely to get colorectal cancer.

Ethnicity: In the U.S., cancer rates are higher among Japanese-Americans, African-Americans, and non-Hispanic whites compared to other ethnic groups. Continue reading ‘Risks of Colon Cancer’ »

With almost tens of millions of candles being sold yearly and is believed to be worth Pounds125 millions, it can be said that candles are still very popular nowadays. With this huge number of candles bring sold and being burned and used, scientists and researchers ventured on the effects on health of candle smoke.

A recent study at the South Carolina State University found out that candle fumes, especially in closed and unventilated spaces, can cause health problems like asthma, allergies and even cancer. According to Amid Hamidi, the co-author of the research, candles made from paraffin wax emit fumes that pose health threats to individuals. However, he clarified that lighting candles in unventilated and closed spaces for a longer time can be the cause of these problems. He also stressed that occasional paraffin-made candles’ emissions can cause you no harm. Continue reading ‘Now It's Cancer and Candles’ »

Cancer of any kind is very dangerous to the human body. For that matter, its very mention brings down shivers in a person’s body, and people start to feel worried and tensed. There are some kinds of cancers that are general, such as lung cancer, liver cancer etc. However, there are certain gender specific types of cancers too such as the Breast Cancer which is common in women. In men, one of the most common kinds of cancer is the Prostrate Cancer. Prostrate is actually a male gland which is situated right under the bladder. According to statistics, 1 out of every 6 men in the United States suffers from this kind of cancer.

Like all diseases and illnesses, early detection in Prostate Cancer also helps to prevent the situation from worsening. Most of the times, people do not have full knowledge about the symptoms of the cancer, and thus, they are not even aware of the fact that they are suffering from a particular kind of cancer, and for that matter, any kind of disease. Some of the most common symptoms of prostrate cancer include problem in urination, which includes trouble in its passing or experiencing any kind of pain; blood in the urine or a very weak flow of the urine; pain in lower back, hips, thighs, abdominal area or near the penis. Sometimes, even some kind of unexpected sudden weight loss is also considered to be one of the symptoms of prostrate cancer. Continue reading ‘What Are the Common Symptoms of Prostate Cancer?’ »

Fecal Occult Blood Testing (FOBT)

These laboratory kits cost about $10 and they are the most common colon cancer screening tests, although their effectiveness is being questioned. This test involves taking samples from two different parts of your stool, for three days, and spreading the samples on the testing paper. A recent study found a 33 percent reduction in death (in average-risk people) from colorectal cancer in the group having an annual FOBT test. Some of this reduction in risk could be due to colonoscopies that were performed due to false positive FOBT results. If you are opting for an FOBT as part of your annual physical exam, there are a few things you might want to know:

* Of all the different FOBT tests available, HemeSelect (an immunochemical test) has been shown to perform better than the others.
* The test is more accurate (avoiding false-negative and false-positive test results) when you abstain from taking aspirin and eating certain foods (red meat, some raw fruits and vegetables, and vitamin C supplements). Be sure to ask your doctor if there are any food guidelines he/she wants you to follow before taking the samples.
* It can still miss a cancer that wasn’t bleeding at the time or it can pick up bleeding for which no source can be found. Continue reading ‘Colon Cancer Tests’ »

It is devastating for someone to be told that medicine has run out of options and there is no more treatment that can be offered. Some patients adapt to what they consider the inevitable. However some people fight tooth and nail to have a longer period of time before they die. They want to explore every option. Is this realistic? Are there any cancer remedies or natural cancer treatments that have been shown to work?

The official medical answer to that is, no, or medicine would be using them. However it has to be acknowledged that there are some people who, despite their medical prognosis, do much better than expected, and most medical people have no idea why that is. Much research has been done but few doctors know of it and even fewer believe that it is their role to tell patients about it. On Oct. 15, CBC Radio’s program “The Current,” featured author Barbara Ehrenreich’s latest book, Bright-sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America

In her book, Ehrenreich takes a trenchant look into America’s obsession with presenting a “positive” image at all times and at all costs. Spurred by her own reaction to a bout of breast cancer, Ehrenreich came face-to-face with the near obsessive culture of positivity, which led to her questioning not only what purpose it serves, but how it came to exist. A significantly higher number of African Americans die from cancer than Caucasians – a recent study corroborates statistical figures that seem to remain almost unchanged from as early as 1981.

While the death rate for cancer has drastically decreased in the recent past, the gap between the death rate in Caucasians and African Americans still remains the same. African Americans seem to be at more risk to die from cancer than Caucasians.

African American women have a higher death rate than Caucasians women, compared to the percentage in 1981. For African American men, the higher death rate as compared to Caucasians men remains almost the same as before. Continue reading ‘Cancer Mortality and Racial Implications’ »

Achieving a green tea and prostate cancer treatment would be a great breakthrough in providing a solution to a condition that had 186000 new cases in the United States in 2008. However, while this is a clear possibility in the future, it is still a work in progress at present.

Studies in the laboratory have shown that the active ingredients of green tea (mainly polyphenols and catechins) take part in reactions against the start, growth and spread of cancers. Thus green tea (GT) polyphenols can prevent the formation of the same type of carcinogens as found in tobacco.

They have also been found to inhibit the same type of toxic molecules found in some cooked fish and meats that damage DNA and have been associated with pancreatic, colon and breast cancers.

One of the major catechins found in GT known as EGCG shows a strong effect against mutations and DNA damage and also inhibits the enzymes that lead to tumor promotion. This EGCG has also been found to inhibit the growth of malignant cells and can induce the death of unwanted cells (a process known as apoptosis).
