When ovarian cancer patients undergo chemotherapy, nausea and vomiting are the most commonly made complaints. Even as the delivery methods of the chemotherapy drugs may vary, by and large nausea is the universally experienced side effect, closely followed by vomiting. What makes this side effect so miserable for patients is the fact that even on an empty stomach the feelings do not subside, and more than one chemotherapy patient may find herself dry heaving repeatedly during and after her chemotherapy treatment.

Since ovarian cancer treatment quite frequently includes chemotherapy, patients and their physicians have been working hard to figure out ways around this side effect.

* On the day of your chemotherapy, physicians recommend that you have an easy to digest breakfast. Dry toast, Jell-o, saltines, or slices of white bread are recommended. Stay away from eggs and anything else that may be considered a full breakfast. Especially of note is that you should avoid anything with a heightened acidity, such as grapefruit or orange juice.
* Bring along some plain crackers and a bottle of water. Listen to your body and its signals! You may be surprised to find that you are craving food in the midst of chemotherapy. Eat one cracker and see how you feel.
* Once you arrive at home, plan on avoiding the smells of spicy foods. In the same way, avoid the smell of drinks as well. Some ovarian cancer patients have reported that the smell of their children’s hot chocolate or their husband’s coffee suddenly brought on a wave of nausea. To this end it is best to spend the first 24 hour period after chemotherapy without strong scents and odors.
* Keep cool when you feel nauseous. Patients have found that having the car window rolled down is essential in keeping actual vomiting at bay and may actually help to relieve nausea. Physicians suggest that the intake of fresh, cool air is instrumental.
* Come prepared for vomiting. This might sound like an odd piece of advise, but ovarian cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and subsequently suffering from severe nausea have reported that the stress over not having a bag readily available should the sick feeling turn into actual vomiting is so stressful that in the end the vomiting appeared to have been induced by the stress and fear of vomiting.

Some patients have experimented with anti emetic drugs and found that they yielded great results. Of course, any time you ingest any kind of medication, vitamin, herbal remedy, or anything else you must discuss it with your physician first! Some over the counter supplements have been known to alter the way chemotherapy drugs work and there is little benefit in undergoing the treatment if the results are not what you have hoped for due to the use of other substances. As a matter of fact, your doctor should be able to provide you with a list of acceptable and not recommended medications and over the counter remedies for the weeks that you are undergoing chemotherapy!

For more interesting reading on Ovarian Cancer, go to http://www.bodytalk1on1.com

My name is Juliet Taylor, and I decided to create the website http://www.bodytalk1on1.com when I discovered the many problems that I have developed in my body, that many other people themselves are faced with, but become so trouble because of lack of knowledge about that condition. So, I decide to create this website to inform people on different types of conditions that affects our body. People say what you don’t know won’t hurt you, but I beg to differ, because know that you have a condition in the development of it’s early stage will make a ton of difference.

The treatment through which different kinds of cancer are treated by destroying the cancer cells is known as Chemotherapy. The medicines that are used during the treatment are known as anticancer drugs. When there is uncontrollable growth of cells it leads to cancer. Though chemotherapy is associated with cancer, it is also used to treat conditions that are non-cancerous. There are about 200 types of cancer and it is treated with the help of over 50 types of chemotherapy medicines.

It’s a normal phenomenon to have growth and death of cells in a body, but when a person is affected by cancer the normal cells grow uncontrollably. In order to kill the cancer cells the anti cancer medicines are helpful. When the medicines directly reach the blood it helps to kill the cancerous cells fast .As each medicine that is used has different effects it is at times used in combinations.

Apart from the chemotherapy medicines there are other medicines also that are used for cancer treatment as these medicines directly block the effect of the hormones of the body. In order to boost the immune system of the body and treat the substances that are present in our body, biological therapy is used. These substances that are found in our body are in very less quantity and they are effective in fighting against the cancer cells and other such diseases. The substances that can kill the cancer cells or change the ways in which the body reacts to a tumor can be made in the laboratory.

Though chemotherapy may lead to lots of side effects it’s seen that if the treatment is successful then the cancer cells vanish permanently .During the treatment of cancer healthy parts of the body are also get affected which are the digestive system, the hair follicles, the lining in the mouth, and the bone marrow

Chemotherapy treatment is always done in several sessions as in each session some of the cancer cells get destroyed and after each session a rest period of some days is given so that the normal cells and tissues recover properly.

The treatment that is given for cancer depends on the type of cancer, the part of the body that is affected, the health of the patient as well as effects of cancer on other parts and functions of the body.

Chemotherapy treatment is given in cycles which may continue from days to several weeks depending on the condition of the disease. The medicines are given in different forms according to the type of cancer and this is decided by the doctor. The different chemotherapy forms are :

1)Intravenous (IV) -
2)Oral-
3)Injection -
4)Topical-

The chemotherapy medicines are administered into the body through:

A portable catheter -
A central line-
A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line-
An infusion pump.

Side effects of Chemotherapy are many but they are all temporary and go off as the treatment gets over

Change in sense of taste of mouth as well as sores of mouth
Nausea, Diarrhea & Vomiting
Swelling with pain
Loss of appetite
Constipation
Fatigue, tiredness
Bleeding
Infertility.
Numbness in your feet and hands
Damage of heart, nerve, lung, liver
Skin gets dry and discolored
Get infection easily
Hair fall

When a person goes through chemotherapy treatment he faces fear as well as anxiety and depression over come him. Thus it is advisable for the patients and his relatives to get a very clear picture about the disease and the treatment that is being given from the doctor and get all the queries answered before going for the treatment as it’s very important to feel mentally as well as physically well before the treatment starts

These days people spend more money then ever for prescription drugs and it seems for every health problem doctors suggest some kind of a drug. So if doctors suggest drugs for most health problems, then certainly these drugs should be very effective, right? Well, if you think about how many people are using chemotherapy to treat cancer and how many people beat cancer with it, then it is clear that drugs do not work very well.

Money and power are the main driving forces behind the production of drugs. The goal for drug companies is to make as much profits as possible, because it is all a business. The more people are ill, the more potential customers there are. Treating cancer with chemotherapy is a great way to make money.

Big drug companies make the rules and break the rules. What ever they decide is the best way to treat cancer stays that way and other cancer treatment options, that are a lot of safer and much more effective are neglected. The reason why natural and alternative treatments for cancer are not in the mainstream, is not because they are not working, but because you can not patent nature.

When you can not patent something, then you also can not make money. But you can make huge amount of profits selling drugs, that are patented, the problem is getting worse all the time. Most Americans use some kind of a prescription drug and therefore drug companies make a lot of money with it.

If you want to find other ways to treat cancer, besides chemotherapy, then you got to do your own research. People have to stand up for their rights and use treatments that are the most effective and safe, not what is forced upon them.

Over 350 gentle and non-toxic natural and alternative cancer treatments. Over 2,000 testimonials from people who used these treatments to beat their cancer. If cancer has touched your life ” please, download these ebooks NOW. http://www.natural-cancer-treatments.info

There are many facts known about leukemia and if someone is dealing with the problem it’s these facts they need to know. Like all cancers, leukemia happens for a reason as its not some mysterious illness that science can’t fathom. For instance it’s exceptionally rare in S.E. Asia but is prevalent in all western developed countries.

Some of the facts that have been linked to leukemia are high voltage power lines and people living close to these have a much higher risk factor. The chemical formaldehyde that is commonly found in our homes has also been linked to it. Food items associated with leukemia are aspartame, the artificial sweetener in many soft drinks and chewing gum. Sodium nitrite is another; the additive is used in luncheon meats. Other meats that contain sodium nitrite are sausages, hot dogs, hamburgers, bacon, ham, and any meats that have been processed.

Foods that are known to help leukemia patients are turmeric, the root vegetable that is the yellow colouring used in curry powder, bananas, oranges as well as grape seed extract. Also vitamin A which is most abundant in carrots, broccoli, squash and spinach. As with most nutrients it is always best to get them from natural sources and not in supplement form. In other words eat grapes, that is grapes with seed in them and buy turmeric fresh, grate it and use it in cooking.

There are many facts known about all cancers but unfortunately today our medical system is more interested in treating these different cancers instead of providing us with these known facts so we can avoid the problem in the first place. We don’t have cancer prevention today; we only have expensive toxic treatments that are not very effective. Remember there is nothing in our 3 main treatments that will stop the return of cancer.

All cancers including leukemia have many known causes and these are; nutritional deficiencies, our sedentary lifestyle and the chemicals we encounter everyday. Leukemia is cancer of the blood; the body has lost control and makes too many white blood cells so why would it be any different to any other cancer. Anyone with leukemia needs to address all these issues, that is eat food in its natural state, get some exercise and be wary of all chemicals we use in our homes these days.

There is no such thing as a single cause for cancer, all cancers have multiple causes so the way to successfully overcome leukemia is to address the underlying causes and a change of diet is a great start. A strict natural diet is of paramount importance.

Alan Wighton is an independent health researcher, having spent many years specialising in cancer. For more information on effective ways to restore your health and why we only have chemotherapy to treat leukemia; please visit Cancer Facts & Information

Cells are the basic building blocks of the human body. Cells grow in our body within limits. If a sudden fast and improper growth of cells take place in a particular part or completely in the body is what we name as cancer. Chemotherapy is a special method of treating the cancer patients. With a help of some kind of drugs inserted into the body, the cancer cells are completely removed or controlled.

Several types of drugs are used in chemotherapy for curing the cancer. The chemotherapy drug usage depends on the type of cancer and stage of it. Also depending upon the age, health of the patients they vary from patient to patient. There are so many drugs available for this purpose.

Let us see some of the drugs used commonly for the chemotherapy are; Cisplatin, Carboplatin, vinorelbine, metheotrexrate, paclitaxel are the widely used. They are used in combinations most of the times.

But there lies a serious possibility of side effects emerging due to the chemotherapy. Most of the side effects happen at the time of undergoing the treatment. General side effects are abdominal pain, headache, vomiting, neck and breathing problems.

Sometimes there may be difference in blood count are seen. This occurs as result of drug used destroys the healthier cells in the body. The platelets in the body may be reduced too. It produces unstopped bleeding.

Hair loss is found to be an inevitable setback while performing this treatment. Loss of weight associated with depression may be a dangerous side effect. Most of the side effects are present at the time of performing chemotherapy and don’t appear after the treatment is over.

Anand prabhakar is an author living in India. He is an expert in chemotherapy drug information and you can learn a lot about it from his website list of chemotherapy drugs

The method of killing the cancer cells present the whole body or in particular part by passing anti-cancer drugs into the blood stream is called chemotherapy. It is also employed to prevent the spreading of cancer from part to another. It proves to be more efficient when it is used in the metastasis condition. In this condition the cancer spreads to all parts from where it has originated.

Each every chemotherapy agent has specific role depending upon the treatment and characteristics of the drug used. Most of them intervene with the DNA synthesis. Based on their features and treatment they are classified as alkylating agents, anti-metabolits, anthracyclines, antitumor antibiotics, monoclonal antibodies, platinums, or plant alkaloids.

Alkylating agents are the widely used drugs in the chemotherapy treatment. These drugs are effective through all phases of cell cycle. The alkylate agent acts directly on the DNA strands, breaks the strands and forms abnormal pairing, thus prevents the cell division taking place, and cells die off as a result of it.

Anti-metabolits are found to be useful in treating chronic problems and some cases of leukemia and for various tumors.

Anthracyclines drugs are obtained from natural resources. They work by producing free oxygen radicals which acts with the DNA strands and prevents the cell division.

Antitumor antibiotics are obtained from soil fungus streptomyces. It employs the free oxygen radicals for breaking the DNA strands and preventing cell division. Bleomycin is a commonly used antitumor antibiotic

Monoclonal antibodies, they are attach themselves with the tumor specific antigens and thus block the growth of the cell.

Platinums, they are also used to provide the DNA impairing and to stop the cell growth. But the setback is they can injure the kidneys as they are toxic.

Plant alkaloids, according to the name they are derived from plants. And they are used in cell specific cycles.

Anand prabhakar is an author living in India. He is an expert in list of chemotherapy drugs and you can learn a lot about it from his website how is chemotherapy made

It goes without saying that “chances” and percentages should be taken for what they are – an estimate. If something happens 9 out of 10 times, there is still a decent chance that you might be that 1 out of ten times. The survival rate of any cancer should be taken only as a guideline, not anything more than that. Patients beat cancer all the time and there is no reason that you can’t either.

The survival rate with Mesothelioma is done on a five year projection. This simply means that the number of patients surviving the cancer are compared through each of the five years after diagnosis. For instance, 39 percent of patients diagnosed with Mesothelioma survive for more than a year. Unfortunately, the numbers go down from there with 20 percent surviving 2 years, 11 surviving three years, 10 percent surviving four years and 9 percent surviving 5 years. All and all, these are not great numbers.

So, let’s ask the obvious question. Are you doomed if diagnosed with Mesothelioma? No! Mesothelioma has been studied significantly and a wide range of treatments have been tried over the years. As a result, there is no a fairly clear course of treatment – aggressive. Doctors know that they need to go for broke and Mesothelioma survival rates are actually going up compared to years ago. The key is to be positive and be ready to undergo aggressive surgery, radio therapy and chemotherapy.

It should also be noted that there are a host of new treatments going through FDA clinical trials. These treatments attack Mesothelioma in many different ways. As a person diagnosed with the disease, you can participate in the trials. You can contact the National Cancer Institute to get a list of trials being conducted.

If you have to get cancer, Mesothelioma is not really the one you want. That being said, it is no longer an automatic death sentence. Be positive and demand aggressive treatment. Get a referral to a Mesothelioma specialist to ensure you are getting the latest treatments possible. People survive and you can as well.

Breast Cancer – Aside from October being one of the cooler months of the year, and a special month for kids to go trick or treating dressed up as an eerie ghoul to scare people witless, it is however on a more serious note Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For some women being greeted at the door by a vampire, devil or witch, the fright at that moment is nothing in comparison to the fear they feel inside after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time when women and young girls are alerted to the importance of early detection. This doesn’t mean that women are not made aware of what’s involved with breast cancer treatments, self breast examination and recovery issues all year round; it is just strongly more focused upon in October through Breast Awareness Campaigns. These types of campaigns have great pulling power where we see more and more women coming forward to get themselves checked out, and their questions answered.

As it is with most organizations and support groups they need financial help to keep up the good work. Breast cancer groups will include people who care, and are compassionate towards your feelings. It is also most likely that them who run the groups are, or, have been patients themselves. Cancer care workers will help you the best they can to come to terms with having breast cancer, be there for you when undergoing treatment for breast cancer

If you would like to help these people who work tirelessly tending to the sick, then you can. Some people will run a marathon to raise funds for breast cancer while others may put on a show and sell tickets to make money for their breast cancer charity. Why not take advantage of Halloween night and get a few friends together and dress up, and instead of holding a lighted pumpkin, hold up a placard with a message saying all monetary donations will be donated to the breast cancer campaign.

It is likely that a great deal of women reading this will know how to do a self breast examination regular, but for those oblivious more details on this below.

Let’s direct our attention to women who are recovering and survived the disease and want their life back to normal. In most cases of breast cancer it is not only the patient affected and included with all the heartache, your partner, close relatives and friends, and more heart rendering if there’s children. The numbers are high for women suffering from breast cancer who get to see their kids grow up, all because they detected a lump early in their breast before it could further reach a dangerous stage (life threatening.)

Some helpful advice

No matter how much some tells you not to be scared and everything is going to be fine, you’ll always debate this in thought due the fear of knowing you have the Big C. Getting over the initial shock of having you’re your GP tell you – you have breast cancer, you may benefit and feel more content reading up on the disease. This will help you understand more clearly about breast cancer, of which in the past you might never had given much thought too, until receiving the news you had it. As long as the advice is got from a reputable source like “breastcancer.org” then take heed because the information they provide is right and safe.

Having chemotherapy treatment can drain you of much energy so get someone in to help you with household chores. Don’t try and overdo things around the home, remember you are recovering and your body needs time to heal.

Join a support group for mental strength. You might find talking about your cancer, your family, your fears, your hopes and much more to other patients who are willing to reciprocate in this manner will help greatly, and you can also learn a lot from others ailing, and how they overcame them.

Talking about your breast cancer or any other type of cancer is known to help, but only when you want to. Some days you may feel that talking is what you need, while at other times you don’t. There’s always going to be them awkward moments when friends and family will try to avoid having to talk to you, or sadly come face to face with you if you’re out and about. This usually happens because they don’t know what to say. If you’re up to it then break the barrier that’s making it difficult for them to communicate. Let them know you’re not upset if they bring up the subject, and for them not to tread on eggshells when around you. This is when normality comes back into your life. The longer you keep quiet so will the others.

If you can speak openly about your condition you get to evade those dreaded silent moments. Only talk about your condition when you’re good and ready, and don’t be bullied into it.

You have to be positive about your condition if you can, and avoid being around folks with a somber look. They may well be saddened for you, but explain to them that their feeling down is not helping.

No matter how strong of a person you are, and positive about the whole thing, there will be bad days and weakness, that’s fine and perfectly natural. There will be crying days of which is expected, so bawl your eyes out if it makes you feel any better. Undergoing chemotherapy and radiation is hard, and crying promotes healing.

Comforting Quotes

Live in the present the best you can – the past can’t be undone and the future is unknown; many of our fears might not happen.

Live your life as fully as possible and carry out the activities that give you the most joy and meaning.”

Recognise that you have control over how you react to situations, even if you can’t control what happens to you.”

Learn to accept your negative feelings such as anger, sadness and hatred – this may help them to pass.”

Concentrate on relaxing with a relaxation tape.”

Keep a diary about what you go through to help you understand and express your feelings.”

Take part in breast cancer networks – this may help you feel that, through your experiences, you’re helping other women in a similar situation.”

Try to keep your sense of humour – even though it can be difficult at times!”

The positive thing to do starting now is to do regular self breast examinations to help prevent having to go through any of the above mentioned ups and downs, pains and treatments for Breast Cancer.

How to Perform a Self Breast Examination

The ideal time to examine the breasts is right after menstruation because they are not as sensitive tender or swollen.

Lie down and put a cushion under your right shoulder.

Place your right arm behind your head.

Using the tip pads of your 3 middle fingers on your left hand press gently and feel for lumps or thickening in your right breast.

Get a feel of how your breast feels first. If you’re uncertain of how much pressure to use ask your GP.

Learn what your breast feels like most of the time. A firm ridge in the lower curve of each breast is normal.

Move around the breast in a circular motion or the up and down movement. Do it the same way regular at an allotted like (1 month or sooner.)

Now examine your left breast doing exactly the same.

Repeat the examination of both breasts while standing, with one arm behind your head. The upright position makes it easier to check the upper and outer parts of the breasts.

Other signs and symptoms of abnormality are dimpling of the skin, changes in the nipple, redness, or swelling and nipple discharge being another.

Come on girls get cracking on making those Halloween costumes and go make money for Breast Cancer. You will be saving lives by doing this, and who knows may be your own, or someone close to you.

Halloween Costume Tip: Go dressed up as nurses and doctors with fully painted up zombie style faces. Without early detection of breast cancer then in the future there may be no need for face paint, it’s your call.

…right through the recovery period and after care.

Mesothelioma is a notoriously difficult asbestos related cancer to treat. Most chemotherapy drugs that have been used to treat this type of asbestos cancer have not had appreciable success in the treatment of this deadly cancer.

Among recently approved medications, Alimta stands out as having the most promise in prolonging the life of mesothelioma patients, as well as improving their quality of life.

Alimta, also known as Pemetrexed is a newer chemotherapy medication that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2005. Most times it used in combination with Cisplatin ,and Alimta is the first medication that is specifically approved for the treatment of mesothelioma and is considered to be the most effective chemotherapy treatment for pleural mesothelioma patients especially those that have advanced cancer that are not candidates for surgery.

Alimta is a multi-targeted anti-folate medication that works by blocking the enzymes required for DNA replication and cell division. During clinical trials, Alimta (used in tandem with Cisplatin) added an average of three months to the lives of malignant mesothelioma patients and also helped to reduce symptoms.

As with most cancer medications, it is imperative for patients to discuss the use of Alimta and Cisplatin with their doctor before beginning cancer treatment. An oncologist will provide facts about the effectiveness of Alimta, the administration of the medication, and the side effects patients encounter.

Cancer specialists doctors usually recommend the complimentary use of B12 supplements given intramuscularly{injection}and folic acid supplements given orally on a daily dosage (supplementation will continue for 21 days after the last dosage cycle of Alimta).

Patients are also placed on adjuvant oral steroids to help minimize side effects. Patients should inform their doctor of all other medications being taken to avoid dangerous interactions.

Alimta is given to mesothelioma patients every 21 days on an outpatient basis. Treatment consists of a 10-minute IV infusion, followed by two hours of Cisplatin. The number of cycles patients are required to receive will depend on their response to the medications and intensity of resulting side effects.

Side Effects

The side effects of Alimta are usually mild to moderate for most patients with pleural mesothelioma. Some patients may experience extreme side effects and a doctor should be informed immediately if a reaction becomes a serious problem. Side effects typically include:

?Nausea

?Vomiting

?Fatigue

?Constipation

?Diarrhea

?Loss of appetite

?Weight loss

?Tiredness

?Weakness

?Pale skin

?Headache

?Dizziness

?Confusion

?Fast heartbeat

?Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep

?Changes in mood

?Depression

?Joint or muscle pain

?Low red blood cells count(anemia)

?Low white blood cells count(neutropenia)

?Low platelets count(thrombocytopenia)

Patients experiencing any of the following symptoms should immediately call their doctor:

?Diarrhea

?Sores in the mouth, throat, or on the lips

?Unusual bleeding or bruising

?Sore throat, fever, chills, cough, or other signs of infection

?Chest pain

?Difficulty breathing or swallowing

?Slow or difficult speech

?Weakness or numbness of an arm or leg

?Pain, burning, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet

?Hives

?Rash

?Itching

?Decreased urination

Mesothelioma patients should avoid being near people who have colds, the flu, or other signs of illness because during chemotherapy the immune system is weakened by the chemo drugs thus making the patient very prone to “catching” infections.

Make sure to contact your doctor at once if you develop signs of an infection. Before you receive Alimta, tell your doctor if you are taking an NASAID, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, indometacin, ketoprofen, and others, these drugs tend to interact negatively with Alimta. Also before receiving Alimta, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, immune deficiency or the presence of excessive fluid in your lungs or in any organ in your body.
