Recent studies have now shown that maintaining a quality diet can help in preventing breast cancer among many women. It seems that diet is becoming more and more at the centre of prevention these days and with good reason, you are what you eat.

Perhaps the problem is that most of us maintain only short periods of good diet and it does not become effective until it’s a full time life habit. The speed and pressure of modern lifestyle can make it difficult to avoid the convenience of processed food but if we are worried about long term health the issue is clear – diet is crucial.

We all need to get a little more serious about it.

This diet is being referred to as the prudent diet. It’s made up of whole grains, vegetables of course and fish. The usual suspects are kept to a minimum such as red meats and white bread or any other form of starchy carbohydrates.

Among women who took part in the study, 20 percent of those on prudent daily diets were one third less likely to develop breast cancer in comparison to those on a more ‘western diet’ of fatty and processed foods. As always however these trials are rarely black and white…

One subject which did complicate the study was that of age and weight which are both important points. The exact reasons are still unclear but the studies suggest that the benefits afforded by a prudent diet are mostly for thinner women. Overweight women will still be at high risk despite maintaining a prudent diet.

The overall lesson is once again that diet does so many things for so many diseases and gives each of us a universal insurance policy against a great variety of possible diseases.

Colon cancer surgery is a major medical procedure. After an individual has colon cancer surgery there are several diet options that can prevent the colon cancer from reoccurring. One of the biggest contributing factors to colon cancer is dietary fat. A diet that has a high fat consumption greatly increases the amount of bile acids that are released into the digestive tract. Once bile acids have entered the colon the acids can actually turn into secondary bile acids. These secondary bile acids can promote the growth of a tumor in the colon. It is very important that after colon cancer surgery, to prevent the cancer from reoccurring, to eat a diet that is low in fat.

Another great way to prevent colon cancer is to eat a diet that is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are praised as an important substance in fighting colorectal cancer and other cancers of the body. Antioxidants give the body’s immune system a boost that acts as a defensive line against harmful free radicals.

Foods that are rich in antioxidants are vegetables and fruits. Even some types of tea are rich in antioxidants. Two very important antioxidants are selenium and beta-carotene. These two antioxidants are responsible for helping the body repair the damage caused by dangerous free radicals. Doctors recommend that an individual eat foods that are rich in antioxidants instead of taking a supplement.

Folic acid, calcium and vitamin D are both valuable resources in the fight against rectal cancer. Folic acid helps to form new tissues and cells in the body. Plus folic acid is in charge of keeping the red blood cells healthy. Foods that are rich in folic acid are dark leafy green vegetables and citrus fruits. Recent studies have proven that both calcium and vitamin D play a big part in fighting off colon cancer. It is important to eat foods such as yogurt, cheese, milk, sardines, salmon, mustard and dark green leafy vegetables.

After colorectal cancer surgery an individual should pay attention to their fiber intake. Fiber is believed to improve the health of an individual by moving waste through the digestive tract at a faster speed. There are many foods that are good sources of fiber. Some of these foods are berries, prunes, whole grain cereals, fresh fruits, vegetables, brown rice and beans.

When following a special diet after rectal cancer surgery, make sure to choose foods to eat that come from natural plant sources. Also, limit the intake of high-fat foods. Many high-fat foods come from animal sources. Make sure to exercise on a regular basis in order to maintain a healthy weight. After colon cancer surgery it is in an individual’s best interest to limit the consumption of alcoholic beverages. All of these suggestions can help in the fight against colon cancer.

Leukemia is actually a very tricky disease that may be very hard to diagnose at early stages, but there are certain cautionary measures that can be undertaken to prevent the disease. These measures will also have to do with changes in one’s lifestyle. People are actually advised to avoid exposing themselves to herbicides, insecticides and other chemicals to reduce the risks of contacting the disease.

Medics have also argued that Leukemia, in some cases, may be in the genes of a particular bloodline. If there is a history of Leukemia in one’s lineage, there is a high chance of striking a member of the same lineage. It is also necessary to see a doctor for check-up if one notices exaggerated weight loss. Medics also argue that people who exercise regularly have low chances of developing the leukemia.

Though prevention of Leukemia is hard, diet can contribute greatly to its appearance. Societies where junk and fatty foods are not in common have reduced chances of experiencing Leukemia prevalence. If a person has been experiencing some disorders of blood, chances are higher that he may also be at risk of contracting Leukemia. It is thus necessary that such a person seeks medical advice as early as possible.

Any chronic health condition may be very hard to bear, and most people have a problem when asked to see a doctor quite often, especially when they are not sick. Leukemia is a disease that Prevention from its penetration or adverse effects is possible, only when the condition is detected early.

Anemia is an iron deficiency in the blood resulting in the poor delivery of oxygen throughout the blood stream.

Symptoms of Anemia:

* Pale skin color or tone
* Pale or clear looking eyelids
* Feeling of constantly being tired or weak
* Lack of energy
* Difficulty in focusing or concentrating

It is not always easy to diagnose Anemia straight away. If you have any of the above symptoms you should consult your doctor as soon as possible. Many people make the wrong decision thinking that Anemia is not a serious condition. On the contrary, Anemia can lead to a number of serious conditions such as heart problems and a difficulty in functioning at you optimal ability.

There are several things that cause Anemia. The most common factor is due to a lack of iron intake in ones day to day diet. Ensure that you take in an efficient amount of foods such as red meat, spinach, liver and molasses. Vegetarians need to be especially cautious and make sure that they take enough Vitamin C which promotes the absorption of iron.

Another ways to become Anemic is through the excessive and continual loss of blood. Certain people are more prone to becoming Anemic than others. For example, pregnant women, who need to take twice as much the amount of iron as a normal person. Vegetarians are also more prone as they do not eat red meats. Additionally, people who drink large amounts of tea are more prone since tea is known to prevent iron absorption in the body.

The main way to prevent and treat Anemia is firstly through a balanced and nutritional diet in which you take all the correct amounts of vitamins and nutrients. Secondly, avoid excessive amounts of aspirin and alcohol as this has a negative affect toward iron absorption.

By following these easy guidelines you should be able to either prevent yourself from becoming Anemic or at least be able to treat the Anemia that you already have.

Thoughts on diet and nutrition for cancer generally

In dealing with a diagnosis of cancer, it is generally agreed that diet can be a major influence. Perhaps a simple rule is best, albeit difficult, to follow in a daily routine and that is the rule of consuming only whole foods. Whole foods are those made up of only themselves. No combinations such as in cake, biscuits and bread for example. Single, whole foods such as vegetables, fruits and unprocessed meats. Foods packed with nutrients, vitamins and minerals. We have been after all, (probably) used to a diet of eating pretty much what ever we wanted and when we wanted. Is this then, one of the many reasons, that we have arrived at this sorry place?

To get the best nutrient efficiency now, the rules have to change. Some foods are going to be “in” our daily routine, and some will have to, necessarily, be dropped. The things that we eat vary in their capacity to support our immune systems by being nutrient and mineral and vitamin rich, and some foods, including manufactured foods contain no such benefits (or at least so few that it actually costs the immune system, energy to process them). Many foods today are constructed with natural carcinogens, such as smoked or pickled goods that exacerbate colon cancer and bowel cancer in particular. Others have carcinogens called pro-carcinogens such as saccharin or artificial colors, nitrates and nitrites. Some fats and deep fried foods are particularly unhelpful, but the risk can be augmented through supplementation of such vitamin and minerals as vitamin D and calcium.

Naturally, it goes without saying that cigarette smoke should be avoided and yes, unfortunately for some, alcohol and sugary drinks are out as well. There is enough research available today to make us all aware that cigarette smoke is carcinogenic and certainly will not allow us to heal from cancer

Lifestyle changes required

At first the changes asked for, appear to be overwhelming and it is quite natural for people to say such things as “I can’t possibly go with out my smokes and a drink after work. I’d rather be dead.” Well, they probably will be well on their way towards achieving their wishes unless some changes often drastic changes, are made. Of course it is hard! Of course it’s a push! But what is it that we’re striving for here? We’re not trying to gain a glittering prize. We’re not trying to enhance our fortune or buy a new car – we’re trying to live! This is life! We’re throwing ourselves on the mercy of God’s court and asking for life! Extended life maybe. Fore-shortened a few years, maybe, but life with our family, our wives and husbands and partners. Life extended with our children and their children. Surely we can eat vegetables to achieve that? Surely the fruits we eat now, will taste, just that much better in the knowledge it supports our life’s unity? Why wouldn’t we take responsibility for our extended life when it means so much?

There are many causes of cancer and rarely just a single cause of cancer and these occur internally and externally, but primarily, change occurs to the cell’s DNA. Most would agree, no doubt, that it is a multi faceted occurrence, with poor lifestyle choices, including diet as one of those many layers. It makes sense then, to put into practice, those changes we can immediately effect and diet is one such option. No one is saying that one particular type of food is a cause, and no one particular food is a cure, simply that some help and others hinder.

Among the foods that hinder are hormonally treated meat such as in some poultry, pork and beef. Some foods have been irradiated and other sprayed with carcinogenic sprays, ethalyine dibromide being one. Fresh is best, try to obtain locally grown, fresh fruit and vegetables and avoid bruised or mouldy foods.

Some studies have indicated that high insulin levels may be a factor in poor cancer survival. The growth hormone IGF-1 which is increased due to a high body mass index, lack of exercise or high stress levels and cancer, have been linked in several studies. Most of us recognize those foods that encourage the production of insulin, high starch, high sugar, breads, cakes, biscuits and even potatoes. Yes, even the good old spud in all it’s forms, give it the flick, at least for now.

Diet and supplements

So what can be eaten? In a word, whole foods, but more importantly, foods that are known to active in cancer prevention, such as cabbage, broccoli, eggplant, wheat sprouts lettuce and spinach. Brussels sprouts are particularly good for protection from breast cancer, lung cancer and bowel cancers. Most berries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries and blackberries are perfect foods. Some fruits, such as green apples and pineapple.

It can be seen from this list, which is in no way exhaustive, that the common denominator is a high nutritional content. Supplementation of vitamins such as A, C, and E and bioflavonoid is recommended in many cases, but also the correct combination of certain foods. Take advice from a nutritionist or naturopath here and be guided by their expert opinion. We included ginger, mint leaf and wheat sprouts in our daily diet regime as well as the dietary changes that I have indicated, most are still in my daily routine. For a time, I increased fibre intake through the consumption of old fashioned grains such as oats. I was guided here by my naturopath and biologist friend, Bill Giles who encouraged a diet free from grains entirely.

“Lectin proteins are the only other major chemical group that occurs in all types of grains, and is involved with immune defence. It is probable that our immune system expends resources to inactivate this protein, and when we are chronically ill, we need all the immune resources we can muster to overcome pathogens and/or disruptive chemicals that may be contributing to our illness.” (Giles 2000)

We added garlic and onion to our diet and supplemented with acidophilus fibre and lactobacillus. Some studies I noted, advise that a supplementation of iodine reduces the risk of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers. To this day, we include, cold pressed, organic flax seed oil in our diet. Make sure that the flax seed oil that you purchase, has been refrigerated and stored out of the sunlight.

I still use the marvelous mixture called Swedish Bitters, foul tasting, but in my opinion, good for everything, especially enhancing the body’s ability to manufacture digestive enzymes.

There is terrific discussion surrounding the use of Soy. I have no advice to offer on the subject except to say that we used it and I still do occasionally and have consumed it now for nearly two decades with no apparent side effects. Ask your nutritionist and be guided by them. Increasing the intake of soy products increases the intake of isoflavones.

Curcumin (in Turmeric) enhances the action of isoflavones. Eat button, shitake, Reishe and Maitake mushrooms, Brussell sprouts, broccoli, green apples, apricots and cherries, Roma tomato, pink grapefruit and watermelon which is rich in lycopene which works against breast and prostate cancers. Supplement with pancreatic enzymes.

Consume 1 Table spoon of flax oil combined well with 2 table spoons of cottage cheese (or quark) per (23 kg or)50lb./body weight /day (Allan 2001) This is an recipe known as the Budwig Diet, used in the traditional and alternate treatment of cancer, developed by Doctor Johana Budwig in the early part of last century. Google it and judge for yourself.

These changes were made to assist Donna (http://www.cancercauseandeffect.com) to manage her Liver cancer, but the type of cancer makes little difference in my opinion and I know people who have breast cancer, colon cancer, stomach and prostate cancer and many other types of immune illnesses including heart disease, who have all benefited from making changes to their lifestyle and eating habits. You have a great deal to lose and a tremendous amount to gain.

I am John Allan, until next time, good luck and may your God watch over you.

All cancers are simply a disease of an immune system that’s been weakened by the way we now live with our artificial food, our sedentary lifestyle as well as the toxic chemicals we use. Common sense should tell us that to overcome the problem all one has to do is to strengthen the immune system and the best way to achieve that is naturally.

The root cause of the cancer growths should be the focus of any treatments yet our mainstream way of treating it typically ignores this. Our treatments today attack the symptoms at the surface, not the causes at the roots. They think of any cancer cells as foreign invaders and simply try to annihilate them instead of treating them as normal body cells which have engaged in undisciplined rapid cell division because of an immune system that’s been weakened.

A much more effective way is to treat the body naturally which will strengthen the immune system and that will assist the body to heal itself. Treating cancer naturally means treating the person and not the growths alone and a great way to start is by correcting the diet. Good nutrition is essential for everyone who’s been diagnosed with cancer.

Cancer is not caused by a virus, bacteria or a faulty gene but by a poor lifestyle and there is no such thing as a quick fix treatment to eliminate it permanently. The best way to fight the disease is with a dedicated anti cancer lifestyle and you do that with knowledge about its causes and never go back to the old habits that allowed these growths to appear in the first place.

There are many changes you can make to help boost the immune system and they are;

Change the food you eat to include fresh raw fruit and vegetables because they have a vitally important role in boosting the immune system.
Always choose whole grain versions of rice, pasta and flour.
Avoid refined and preserved processed foods as these have had most of their nutritional potential removed.
Avoid refined sugar as it’s been shown to significantly suppress the immune system.
Taking some regular aerobic exercise is an essential ingredient in any plan to boost the immune system.
Stop smoking and avoid passive smoke which is smoke from other people.
Emotional health can play a key role in weakening the immune system so seek help if this might be part of the problem.
The more you understand the immune system and its complexities and what it does, the more you realize that it’s a miracle that it can keep our body healthy most of our lives.

There is no treatment or no drug that can overcome the effects of a poor diet, a lack of exercise or an unhealthy lifestyle which have all contributed to the problem. True cures means dealing with the causes and the only way to do that is naturally.

We must never forget that our main weapon against cancer is our own bodies defence system, that is the immune system and it alone has the power to heal.

Diet is one of our lifestyle factors that can put us at risk. Generally, eating a healthy and balanced diet can significantly lower your risk of developing cancer. You are lowering your cancer risk if you-

Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables

Eat a diet low in fat particularly saturated fats

Limit the amount of red and processed meats such as ham in your diet.

Limit alcohol consumption

Ensure your diet has plenty of Folate. (Not enough Folate increases the risk of certain cancers). Folate is naturally found in vegetables, fruit and grain products.

Braise, stir fry, steam, poach, stew, casserole meats (this produces fewer chemicals that can often be produced when cooking meat at high temperatures

Avoid char grilled foods and meats and burnt barbequed foods due to the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are carcinogenic

Include foods such as garlic, berries, carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, bok choy, green tea, wholegrains such as barley, brown rice and oatmeal, turmeric, spinach, lettuce, red grapes, pinto and red kidney beans. These foods are linked with having cancer reducing properties.

Limit salt intake and avoid heavily salted foods and foods that have been pickled or smoked as well as highly processed foods

Eat 7 or more serves a day of grains, grain products, legumes, roots and tubers are needed to give protection from cancer.
There are various links between diet and specific cancers. Stomach and bowel cancer has been linked to diets high in refined starch and sugar. Bowel, lung, prostrate and uterine cancers have been linked to high fat, low fibre diets. Processed meat (ham, bacon or any meat that has been preserved) and red meat has been linked to bowel cancer. High fat diets and obesity are linked to cancers of the gallbladder, colon, breast, kidney and oesophagus. Alcohol has been linked to colon, breast and rectal cancers.

There is no evidence to suggest that particular foods cause cancer but rather they increase the risk of developing cancer. Eating a healthy diet is common sense. Supplements containing the same nutrients as cancer preventing foods should not be expected to provide the same benefits. Studies have shown that there has been an increased risk of cancer in people taking supplements in higher doses than would normally be eaten in the food form.

In the western world the pace of daily life is severely impacting our food choices. We are busy, stressed and often do not get enough time to exercise or prepare healthy food. In addition many people work in front of a computer all day and do not get enough sunlight. Making the correct lifestyle decisions, especially in terms of diet, is crucial to our health as research suggests poor eating habits increase the risk of getting cancer.

In 2007 the World Cancer Research Fund created an expert report entitled ‘Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective’. Researchers looked at all evidence concerning the links between cancer and diet, exercise and body fat. The overall results were quite predictable, in that the findings ascertained that people can reduce their risk of cancer through healthy eating, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight. However, the links between body fat and cancer were stronger than previously thought.

The panel created ten recommendations from the research. These are:

1. Body fat: Be as lean as possible within the normal range of body weight

2. Exercise: Be physically active every day

3. Weight-gain promoting food and drink: Limit consumption of food dense in energy; Avoid drinks containing sugar

4. Plant food: Most food intake should be of plant origin

5. Animal Foods: Limit consumption of red meat and avoid processed meat

6. Alcohol: Limit alcoholic drinks

7. Preservation, processing, and preparation: Limit salt consumption; Avoid moldy cereals (grains) or pulses (legumes)

8. Dietary supplements: Aim to meet nutritional needs through food alone

9. Breastfeeding: Mothers to breastfeed; children to be breastfed

10. Cancer survivors: Follow the recommendations for cancer prevention

Looking at these recommendations many of us may be concerned that we are not following the correct diet or exercise program. It is easy to get caught up in nights out drinking and quick takeaway meals as they are so convenient and, unfortunately, tasty. There are three important things to remember when making changes to our lifestyles:

1. Get in touch with how you actually feel when you have had too much to drink, eat unhealthy food or do not exercise. It is likely that you don’t actually feel very good at all.

2. Remember that even small changes can have a positive impact. You do not need to go on a drastic detox, although some people prefer this approach.

3. Your health is important as it allows you to enjoy life to the full. Poor lifestyle choices can increase your chances of getting cancer.

These lifestyle changes are equally important for people who have had a diagnosis of cancer. In fact many are adopting detoxification diets and other methods of reducing the toxins in their bodies. Angeles Health International offers an alternative cancer treatment called functional oncology.

The program consists of many different stages, one of which is cellular nutrition. This includes detox, alkalinization, a hypo allergenic food plan, supplementation, amino acid IV therapy and essential fatty acid IV therapy. Functional oncology is therefore a holistic approach to cancer treatment.

There has been recent research exposing the harm of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup in our daily diets. While too much sugar can contribute to metabolic syndrome, it appears now that not all sugar is created equal. In fact, fructose is much more harmful than previously thought.

The three natural, common types of sugar in the human diet are glucose, sucrose, and fructose. Glucose is the sugar broken down from carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, and potatoes. Sucrose is refined cane sugar, or common table sugar. Fructose is a component of sucrose along with glucose. Fructose is found in many foods. Today, however, we consume large amounts of high-fructose corn syrup, largely from processed foods and sodas due to its low cost and high relative sweetness. It seems now that high amounts of fructose not only wreak havoc on your metabolism, but also on cancer cells.

A study from UCLA showed that pancreatic cancer cells used fructose and glucose in different ways, concluding that the cancer cells better use fructose to multiply. Pancreatic tumor cells seem to prefer the fructose over glucose, eating it up to divide and proliferate. “These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation,” said Anthony Heaney of UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The results of this study obviously have dietary implication for those fighting cancer. By cutting back or eliminating your intake of fructose–be it from fruit, sodas, or processed foods–you may be able to slow cancer cell growth. Limiting the total amount of sugar in your diet also helps to improve your immune system, as sugar suppresses it.

This study also sends shock-waves through the corn industry as well as certain food and soda producers, as these industries have disagreed with negative health claims of high-fructose corn syrup, and claimed that all sugars are metabolized similarly by the body. Hopefully, more government action will be taken to halt the use of high-fructose corn syrup in so many common products. It is also recommended to limit the amount of refined sugars in your diet period, as cancer cells thrive on all refined sugar. Reducing sugar intake will also help to maintain a healthy weight, reducing your risk for many serious diseases and conditions.
