Health officials said the bacteria is being

transmitted to humans through pigs. The
increased use of antibiotics in agriculture may
be behind the spread of the resistant strain.

What are ESBLs?

Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs) are
actually enzymes produced by certain types of
bacteria, which renders the bacteria resistant
to the antibiotics commonly used to treat them.

ESBLs were first discovered in the mid-1980s. At
the time they were mostly found in the
Klebsiella species of bacteria, in hospital
intensive care units. Until recently, few people
were affected by these mutated bacteria and it
didn’t appear to be a major growing concern.

That has changed, however. According to the
British Health Protection Agency (HPA), a new
class of ESBL (called CTX-M enzymes) has emerged,
which are now being widely detected among E.Coli
bacteria. These ESBL-producing E. Coli are
resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins, and
are becoming more frequent in urinary tract
infections. Continue reading ‘Antibiotic-Resistant Disease Killing Humans and Swine’ »

Mesothelioma can be caused if a person got exposed to asbestos. And when a patient got diagnosed, he was likely in contact with asbestos for months or years. Furthermore, the asbestos concentration is another factor that plays a major role as to whether or not an individual is at risk of developing a related sickness.
One reason why alternative cancer treatment options have become more popular lately, is the fact that traditional methods have failed to cure cancer. Even though, millions of dollars have been invested into research and science, President Nixon’s war on cancer is still not won. The rates for new diagnoses and fatalities is still on the rise.

No doubt, there are still a lot of disputes going on around alternative cancer treatments. Some people automatically associate the term with snake oil doctors. On the other side, there are more and more cancer survivors contributing their success to alternative or complimentary cancer treatment methods.
Historical traces of asbestos use go back to the Roman Empire. However, evidence of the use of asbestos in pottery and chinking of log homes dating back 3000 BC has been found archeological digs in Scandinavia. The third school of thought believes that the substance was actually used for the first time in an island off of Greece.

A sexually transmitted disease (STD) is the last thing you want and disturb the balance of a healthy life. An STD virus can be inside your body without you even knowing it and eventually when you come to know about it, it might be all too late. That is why the maxim ‘Prevention is better than cure’ is probably well suited when it comes to STDs. There are many types of sexually transmitted diseases prevalent in the UK and elsewhere in the world, the most common ones being HIV/AIDS, genital herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis B.

Continue reading ‘Sexually Transmitted Diseases Comprehensive Overview’ »

The cases of sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, are ever increasing due to uncontrolled sexual contacts, and because many do not know the basic knowledge of such diseases. Asymptomatic sexually transmitted diseases appear silently, and the unaware people become easy victims to such diseases. On contracting some sexually transmitted diseases, people can usually notice that something is going wrong, and seek medical advice accordingly. However, in some cases, they become infected but fail to notice any troubling symptoms, and can live years with such diseases, unknowing passing the infections to others during sexual contacts.

It is not untrue to say that such kinds of sexually transmitted diseases work as a hidden epidemic. You can imagine how fast it can infect countless people, as one passes to another, then the other to some other, and so on, the spreading grows rapidly in number. In fact, asymptomatic sexually transmitted diseases are more dangerous than those that erupt with apparent symptoms.

One of the risks that people take during sexual intercourse is the possibility of contracting a sexually transmitted disease or STD. The consequences of acquiring one are even greater during pregnancy because the condition can severely affect the health of both the mother and her baby. Moreover, contracting such diseases during pregnancy may result to long-term effects on the health of the baby.

Sexually transmitted diseases are one of the leading complications during pregnancy. The infection affects approximately two million women during their pregnancy. This is because getting pregnant offers no fail-safe protection from acquiring the disease, and a woman who is pregnant is as vulnerable as any other woman active in sexual activities. If sexually transmitted diseases are dangerous enough for a woman who is not pregnant, the risks multiply even more for a pregnant woman.

When a baby is born and the umbilical cord is cut, the blood left in the umbilical cord and placenta is usually discarded as medical waste. Not any more, as such blood has been found to be a very important and rich source of stem cells, and stem cells is mankind’s latest hope in its battle against age-old fatal diseases.

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that eventually become the different types of blood cells. And as of today, about 70 medical disorders have been treated with such cells, specifically those taken from the umbilical cord. Such cells are very important in the treatment of, say, leukemia, or cancer of the blood. When patients undergo radiation therapy or chemotherapy, their stock stem cells are destroyed, leaving them in a very vulnerable, almost deadly condition. Traditionally, they receive transplant from a donor via bone marrow transplant or direct normal blood transfusion. These two sources of stem cells are fraught with pain and side-effects, and it is tricky to find a donor match.
