Cancer. We do our best to avoid talking or even thinking about being a victim. But if something else doesn’t get us first, all of us are likely to develop some form of the disease or, at a minimum, harbor a latent form. Is there anything we can do to stack the cards against this?

Genetic Deck
There is no question that certain forms of cancer are heritable. Whether children of parents with some cancers develop them also depends on a unique arrangement of the nucleotides, the constituents associated with specific genes involved in the disease’s development. In other words, the same genetic mutation has to be passed on, too.

Even for those who have been dealt a “genetic hand” with a significantly higher risk factor, recent studies show there are ways to reshuffle the deck, so to speak.

Common Causes
Researchers from various scientific and medical disciplines are demonstrating the importance of inflammation as causal in the development of a variety of conditions, including heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, type II diabetes, peripheral artery disease and colon, liver and prostate cancer. Scientific, clinical and epidemiological studies suggest that many diseases are also associated with certain lifestyles and, in particular, the types of foods commonly consumed by a population. I have just met up with a long time friend of mine, only to find he had spent time in hospital undergoing surgery after a diagnosis of bowel cancer. My friend Tom, whose knowledge about cancer of the colon was limited, naturally accepted all the treatments recommended by his health professional.

Tom had surgery in which they removed a section of his colon and his surgeon informed him afterwards that he had got it all. What Tom wasn’t told was they had got all the cancer they could see but because individual cancer cells are only visible through a microscope there were possibly thousands of rogue cells left behind. He also wasn’t told the surgical removal of cancer doesn’t address the reasons why the cancer first grew so it won’t stop it growing again in the future or shifting to another location. Four years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The cancerous tumor could not be felt by me or my gynecologist or the surgeon who performed my mastectomy. My film mammogram and my ultra sound were inconclusive, but I had a radiologist that wouldn’t stop. The tumor finally showed up on a diagnostic mammogram. It was difficult to see and impossible to feel because the tumor was in the back of my breast close to the chest wall. I am one of those very fortunate women who have not become a statistic. Over 40,000 women die every year from breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths of women in the United States. (Lung cancer is first.) While there are no guarantees in life, there are measures to take to give you an edge.

There are two types of screening mammograms: digital and film. Get a yearly digital mammogram. They are more definitive than a film mammogram. A digital mammogram takes an electronic image of the breast and stores it on a computer. Images can be enhanced and brightened for a clearer reading by a radiologist. Digital mammograms use less radiation than a film mammogram. A film mammogram takes a picture of the breast on film, like a picture. It can’t be altered, magnified, or brightened. Mesothelioma is a very aggressive cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Approximately 20 percent of cancers caused by asbestos are peritoneal mesothelioma. This form of the cancer manifests itself in the mesothelial cells of the abdomen when the asbestos fibers become embedded in the space between the cells. It can take as many as 20 to 50 years for the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma to appear. Over these years, the asbestos fibers irritate the parietal layer that covers the stomach cavity and they begin to produce cancer cells. Fluid builds up and tumors eventually form.

What are the Symptoms?
Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are swelling and pain in the abdomen, diarrhea or constipation, unexplained weight loss, nausea and vomiting, and the appearance of lumps under the skin in the abdominal area.

How is It Treated?
Since this type of cancer is usually diagnosed very late in its development, a positive mesothelioma prognosis is not likely, and treatment options are limited. Chemotherapy and radiation are typically used to threat the cancer, along with medication to provide pain relief. For many patients, surgery is not an option because at the point of discovery, the cancer has already spread too far and the patient’s poor health may make him or her too weak to recover from the trauma of surgery. Scientists have determined fresh proof that it is conceivable for a mother with malignant neoplastic disease to transfer the disease on to her unborn baby.

A case study establishes that cancer cells in an baby genetically correspond those from her mom; same mom that was diagnosed with cancer of the blood briefly after a regular full-term birth.

Scientists enunciate uncommon examples of mothers’ cancerous cells in babies have been accounted across the last 100 years, which has indicated the hypothesis that malignant neoplastic disease cells possibly transfered from mother to baby. Merely so far it hadn’t been sustained genetically.

The study , brought out in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists applied genetical tracking to establish that the malignant neoplastic disease cells were carried from mom to infant. Continue reading ‘Cancer Discoveries: Cancer could extend From Pregnant Mother to Baby’ »

Determining the breast cancer stages is important since it enables the patient and doctor to identify the treatment necessary for one’s condition. Also, it is essential in assessing the risk of the given condition and what lifestyle changes the patient can do to improve their health.

Identifying A Breast Cancer’s Stage

When talking about breast cancer stages, it is aimed at describing the extent of the cancer in the body. So, if you ask how a breast cancer is staged, doctors often start to classify whether it is invasive or non-invasive. Other factors considered are the tumor size, number of nymph modes involved, and what other parts of the body it has managed to affect.

Determining a cancer’s stage is helpful during prognosis and deciding on a treatment option.

To determine the stage, a few standard procedures are done by the doctor on a patient. They undergo physical exam and biopsy to acquire the data needed by the doctor for the diagnosis.
