Men who have a variant of the COX-2 gene are more prone to develop prostate cancer than other men. Men with this gene variant can be as high as five times more likely to develop cancer of the prostate than other men. One of the deciding factors is the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids they obtain in their diet.
Research was conducted on over four hundred and sixty men diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. This research was reported in the Clinical Cancer Research Journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. It was found that men with the variant of the COX-2 gene who had low intakes of Omega 3 fatty acids were five times more likely to develop advanced cancer of the prostate. Prostate cancer is the male equivalent of breast cancer, which plagues millions of women. In the US, men have slightly less than a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of developing cancer. Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. In about 6 men, 1 of them will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. Thankfully medical technology has come along way and only about 1 out of 34 men will die from it.
There are two main stages of prostate cancer that are found when diagnosed. One is called the local stage and that means that its still confined to the prostate at the time of diagnosis. The second is called regional and this means that it has spread to other nearby areas.
