Doctors and researchers believe there are certain factors that raise your chances of getting the disease. These are called risk factors for prostate cancer. Doctors cannot explain why one man gets prostate cancer and another does not, but they do know that no one can “catch” prostate cancer from another person.

Dietary factors likely play a role in fatal cases, while hormones are also important in regulating its growth. Diet and lifestyle are also believed to influence men’s development of the disease. Men who eat more red meat are believed to be more likely to develop the condition, while those who have more vegetables and fruits in their regular diet have a lower chance rate. Dietary amounts of certain foods, vitamins, and dietary minerals can contribute to prostate cancer risk. Men with higher serum levels of the short-chain omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid have higher rates of prostate cancer.

Research has shown a link between high saturated-fat diets and prostate cancer. Some experts argue that a lack of fruit and vegetables is the problem, and that people with high-fat diets get more cancer because they tend to eat fewer vegetables. Researchers speculate that this might be due to the difference between the diet and lifestyle of Western and Asian men. Westerners usually take in more red meat while Asians are more likely to eat vegetables and fruits.

Zinc supplementation over long periods , may also lead to an increased risk of developing the condition. Zinc deficiency causes the prostate to enlarge. This may be due to aging or uncontrolled diet with excessive alcohol drinking.

Genetics also plays a role in the risk of this disease. For example, black American men have a higher risk of getting prostate cancer than do Japanese or white American men. Genetic testing for most of these genes is not yet available.

Treatment cannot fully cure men of this disease, but can enhance their life with several years. However, if diagnosed early, prostate cancer can be treated successfully through any of the following.

1. In a procedure called orchiectomy, the patient’s testicles are removed to reduce the amount of testosterone, thereby controlling the growth of cancer cells.

2. Treatment of aggressive tumors and of men with more than 10 years of life expectancy can include radiation therapy, surgical removal of the gland, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy if spread of the cancer is suspected.

Studies have found that there is a connection with the use of medications. Research has shown that daily use of anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen may decrease prostate cancer risk. Studies suggest that dietary fiber reduces cancer risk, and omega-3 fatty acids also have shown a protective benefit against cancer. Flaxseed is also a rich source of lignan, a specific family of fiber-related compounds that appear to play a key role in influencing both estrogen and androgen metabolism.

Diets that are rich in raw foods and vegetables are known to help prevent prostate cancer. Antioxidant foods help reduce “free radicals” in the body, which damage cell structure and may be a trigger for cancer development. A low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables can greatly reduce the likelihood of disease.

Prostate cancer brings with it symptoms that can alert you to its beginning and progression. If you can catch prostate cancer in the earliest stages, you may not even experience any symptoms. This speaks to the importance of regular screening by your physician. Prostate cancer is very survivable if it is caught and treated during the earliest stages. If you experience any of the symptoms below, set up an appointment with your chosen health care provider.

Some of the symptoms that men might experience, if they have not been yet diagnosed and begun treatment, include a need to frequently urinate, most especially during the night. You may need to get up several times or more over a sleep period, which can require you to sleep longer in order to get the minimum number of restful hours that your body needs to function.

Another of the prostate cancer symptoms to look for is a difficulty in starting to urinate when you do get to the bathroom, or, conversely, a difficulty holding back urine. This is understandably embarrassing to victims who are business men, because it interrupts the natural flow of your business day, with its many meetings, business lunches, etc. It is also yet another symptom that makes your nights less restful and more interrupted.

Interrupted flow of urine, or a weaker than usual flow of urine are symptoms of prostate cancer, as well. You may rush to the bathroom feeling a strong urge to void, and then only have a low flow, or sometimes a stop-and-go flow. This leads to many visits to the bathroom during your business day, and some of them may take longer than they normally would, which interrupts your work day. You may also have a burning sensation when you urinate, or pain when you urinate. This symptom alone will often lead men to seek a visit to their physician, because it is more painful and more of a nuisance even than the other symptoms may be.

It should be stated here that many of these symptoms may also point to prostatitis or BPH, which are less serious health issues. When you are checked by your health care professional, they will be able to determine whether your symptoms are due to prostate cancer or one of the less serious prostate issues.

Other prostate cancer symptoms that you might experience include a difficulty in having an erection during sexual intercourse, or painful ejaculation. This will create mental discomfort for the patient, and a lack of interest in sex, due to the sometimes embarrassing lack of erection, and, possibly worse, the pain you experience.

You might also have blood in your semen or your urine, or frequent stiffness or pain in the upper thighs, hips or lower back. The stiffness would not often lead you to your physician on their own, but if you are experiencing any of the other symptoms as well, you need to find the cause.

There is no specific cause for prostrate cancer. But the most commonly observed are old age, inheritance, hormonal effects, infections due to toxins and chemicals. People who are below 40 are less prone to prostrate cancer, but those who are above 80 are more prone. Almost 70-80% of the population in this age group are known to be affected by prostrate cancer.

Inheritance plays a major role in causing prostrate cancer. The type of food consumed or the environment are also equally responsible for causing prostrate cancer. Prostrate cancer is more common in people who already have members infected in the family. Therefore, a person whose grandfather or uncle or father is already having prostrate cancer has a risk of developing prostrate cancer as compared to a person whose family is not affected. Inheritance is majorly caused due to genes that are located on chromosomes and which determine some qualities in individuals.

Talking about hormones, the male hormone which is called as testosterone, is responsible for the abnormal growth of the prostrate tissue and prostrate cancer cells. It is believed to be directly involved in causing and spreading of prostrate cancer.

Talking about the diet or the environment, people who regularly smoke or consume tobacco or who eat food which is high in fats have a greater risk of having prostrate cancer. Other reasons which are responsible for causing cancer are exposure to sunlight, radiations, viruses, bacteria, consumption of alcohol, lack of physical activity and obesity.

One of the most recent study reveals that eating a specific type of food helps in prevention of prostrate cancer. Consumption of oily fish like salmon, tune or mackerel can help to prevent cancer. This is because the omega-3 and the omega-6 fats which are present in oily fish help to control the spreading of cancer to the other organs of the body. Vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds also contain omega-6 fatty acids which help to control the spreading of prostrate cancer.

Diabetes is also known to reduce the risk of having prostrate cancer. This is because diabetes causes the insulin in the human body to decrease to a large extent and increased levels of insulin are known to cause prostrate cancer.

Selenium is also known to inhibit the growth of prostrate cancer. Selenium is known to kill the cells in the human body whose DNA is infected and thereafter, it slows down the growth of cancerous cells.

With respect to diet, eating of food which is low in fat, meat or dairy products or consumption of less fried, smoked, charred, salty, pickled or grilled food, an increased fiber intake can also help in preventing prostrate cancer. Avoiding consumption of tobacco, exercising regularly, avoiding obesity or even consuming less alcohol and sweets can help to prevent prostrate cancer. Also, consuming soya bean, soya milk, tofu, tomato products like tomato sauce, retinal palmitate, gamma tocopherol, lycopene, vitamin D, parathyroid hormone or vitamin E is known to have reduced the risks of prostrate cancer.

The prostate is a gland that is part of the male reproductive system and is located in front of the rectum just below the bladder. The primary role of the prostate gland is to squeeze fluid into the urethra when sperm spurts out through the penis during sexual climax.

As a man ages

The prostate gets bigger as a man gets older. This is an inevitable sign of aging, just as similar to having gray hair or wrinkles. This condition is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). When the prostate gets larger, the surrounding layer of tissue stops it from expanding. This causes the prostate gland to press against the urethra. This in turn causes the bladder wall to become thicker resulting in the frequent urge to urinate even when there is a small amount of urine.

Symptoms of prostate cancer

The most common prostate cancer early symptoms are difficulty in urinating are difficulty in urinating and the urgency to leak. The bladder retains the urine while creating frequent sensations to urinate, usually at night. The urine flow is slow, weak and intermittent.

Treatment

There are a wide range of drugs for the treatment of BPH depending on the symptoms and severity of the condition. While some sufferers respond to drug treatment, others may require surgical methods. It is important to consult your medical specialist for advice before resorting to self-medication.

Caution

Urine retention causes strain on the bladder which will ultimately lead to urinary tract infection and the inability to control urination. It may also cause damage to the kidney and bladder, and if permanently damaged, BPH treatment will be ineffective.

Hence it is imperative that medical attention is required at the first sign of difficulty in urinating. Remember that early diagnosis saves you surgery costs not to mention the sufferings you may undergo if the symptoms are left untreated.
