Doctors and researchers believe there are certain factors that raise your chances of getting the disease. These are called risk factors for prostate cancer. Doctors cannot explain why one man gets prostate cancer and another does not, but they do know that no one can “catch” prostate cancer from another person.

Dietary factors likely play a role in fatal cases, while hormones are also important in regulating its growth. Diet and lifestyle are also believed to influence men’s development of the disease. Men who eat more red meat are believed to be more likely to develop the condition, while those who have more vegetables and fruits in their regular diet have a lower chance rate. Dietary amounts of certain foods, vitamins, and dietary minerals can contribute to prostate cancer risk. Men with higher serum levels of the short-chain omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid have higher rates of prostate cancer. Continue reading ‘Prostate Cancer Help – How to Deal With It’ »

Cancer that arises in the prostate gland is referred to as prostate cancer. The prostate gland is one of the organs of the body that is found at the neck of the canal that passes the urine i.e. just below the bladder. A part of urethra is surrounded by the prostate gland.

Prostate gland helps in controlling the flow of urine by pressing the area with which it surrounds. Another function of the prostate gland is to produce some of the semen agents like sugars and minerals that transport sperm. The prostate gland will be in a size of a wall nut in young people and it grows larger as the age progresses.

The primary source for this tumor is the prostate cells. The tumor slowly develops and hides for a very long time before it can produce any symptoms. These small tumors can also escape the physical examinations. Continue reading ‘Quick Description of Prostate Cancer – What You Need to Know’ »

I have a chronic problem with kidney stones. It was because of this problem that I received a blessing in disguise. While I was seeing my urologist for a scan on pain from a kidney stone, he found some abnormalities. He first noticed that I had a double hernia and also an enlarged prostate. After the hernia surgery, I went back to the urologist to get a psa test.

PSA stands for Prostate specific antigen. Although I’m not a doctor, I learned that it can detect different issues with the prostate. The first is prostatitus. This is some type of infection or inflammation in the pelvic region. The second is an enlarged prostate or BPH which causes difficult urination. Lastly, psa can detect prostate cancer. I have had difficulty urinating for a few years, so I thought for sure that I simply had BPH. Continue reading ‘My Battle With Prostate Cancer’ »

Prostate cancer is serious and the second most common form of cancer death in males in America. Is genetic testing for this cancer possible?

Certain cancers have well established genetic components, the best known being breast cancer and the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. The first prostate cancer gene was discovered way back in 1996 by a team of Swedish and US scientists. Genetic research and techniques have enormously expanded since then, and although other genes involved have been identified, their exact roles have not been uncovered.

In studies of men, their genetic profiles, and prostate cancer, statistically significant relationships have been discovered. However, some prostate cancers are slow growing and even harmless while others are very aggressive and deadly. The tests have not been able to distinguish these. Also there are concerns of privacy. What if companies and health care providers used these test results to help determine whether to offer employment or insurance. Even if illegal, these types of crimes have occurred in the past. And other concern is worry: a man who, with current testing technology, was shown to be at a high risk could worry needlessly.
