Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers that affect men. Just like Breast Cancer is a gender specific cancer affecting women, prostrate is limited to men. However, it is not limited in terms of the number of affected people it has as of now. Statistics show that one man out of every six in the United States is affected by Prostate Cancer. The beginnings of this cancer in men bring with it a variety of problems. Men suffer from various kinds of urination problems. There is excessive urination at night, and sometimes the urine is accompanied with blood. There is also pain during urination. Even sexual performance gets affected and there are problems during ejaculation.

While the detection of the cancer with the help of the symptoms during the initial stages is very useful, delay can cause a lot of problem. If the tumour is allowed to spread in the body for a long time, men can suffer from permanent bone pain in the pelvic area and the spine. The entire lymphatic system too gets damaged and can have severe effects. Therefore, the first and the foremost thing to be kept in mind for prostate cancer is to combat it as early as possible.

Treatments, irrespective of whatever kind they are, will obviously be more effective in the initial stages for the simple fact that the situation is still under control and has not worsened. However beyond that, treatments too at times can fail.

One of the most common treatments of Prostate Cancer is that of Androgen Deprivation, also known as ADT. Therapy under this is done with surgical castration. With the help of this treatment, the body stops producing testosterone. This helps a lot as testosterone gets converted to DHT, which is a cancer stimulant. And since there is reduced testosterone, there is reduction in the spread of the cancer too to its further stages.

Another famous treatment is that of Cryotherapy. This technique is based on the principle of killing cancer cells in the affected areas. There have initially been a lot of debates over the effectiveness of this technique. However it has come back to limelight in the recent times. But then there are risks involved too. With the use of this therapy, life saving chances can be good, but at the cost of sexual dysfunction, and some other complications.

Radical Prostatectomy is another popular treatment. This one is based on the removal of the root cause of the problem itself. Yes, this treatment removes the prostrate gland itself. However, it needs skilled surgeons and professionals. If this treatment is carried out in an improper manner, it can lead to impotence. Therefore, while the chances of ending the cancer with this treatment are high, the risks involved too are very high.

Certain other therapies and treatments such as those of the Radiation are also growing in popularity. The best kind of treatment that suits you will depend on the severity of your case, for which you need to consult a doctor.

Acute myelogenous leukemia is the most common leukemia and is a fast growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Blood cells in the body are made up of platelets known as white and red blood cells. Those who have AML don’t have enough white or red blood cells and instead posses abnormal cells that grow quickly as the illness progresses.

AML is not genetic nor is it infectious however it is mostly caused by being exposed to benzene.

What is Benzene?

Benzene is an organic chemical compound. Benzene is used in production of oil, rubber, dyes and plastic. Benzene is commonly used as an additive in other chemicals. There are small amounts of benzene used in manufacturing processes for instance, detergents, pesticides and drugs.

Benzene is linked to various forms of cancer, as well as other physical issues such as dizziness and mental confusion; anemia; and depressed functioning of the immune system.. People are often not aware that they have been exposed to benzene.

Symptoms of AML

Benzene exposure may occur when people breathe or ingest it through any number of common products used in daily life and at work. Being exposed can lead to a fatal illness such as acute myelogenous leukemia. There are signs you can look for.

Some symptoms of AML include:

* Abdominal swelling

* Infections that continue or repeat

* Difficulty breathing and lack of energy

* Pain in the joints or bones

Treatments

Age and disease subtype are factors that doctors will take into consideration in planning the right treatment for the person living with AML. Some treatments that are considered are:

* Chemotherapy

* Transplants from bone marrow or cord blood

* If the subtype is promyelocytic leukemia, then all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) may be used.

If you think you may have been exposed to benzene and have any of the symptoms listed above, please, contact an experienced attorney to get legal support and the direction you need.

The report, in the September 2009 edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute estimates 1.3 million additional men have been diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer since 1987. Authors claim most of this group are likely to have been overdiagnosed.

“Given the considerable time that has passed since PSA screening began, most of this excess incidence must represent overdiagnosis,” the authors write. “All overdiagnosed patients are needlessly exposed to the hassle factors of obtaining treatment, the financial implications of the diagnosis, and the anxieties associated with becoming a cancer patient…”

The increased diagnosis has been most dramatic among younger men: more than tripling since 1986 in men aged 50-59 (from 58.4 to 212.7 per 100, 000) and more than a sevenfold increase in men under age 50 (from 1.3 to 9.4 per 100,000).

In an accompanying editorial, Otis W. Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, writes, “We desperately need the ability to predict which patient has a localized cancer that is going to metastasize and cause suffering and death and which patient has a cancer that is destined to stay in the patient’s prostate for the remainder of his life.”

Specialists in prostate cancer have recognised for a long time that they diagnose and treat more men with prostate cancer than actually benefit and, at the same time, many men with significant prostate cancer are diagnosed too late.

Almost 10,000 men die from prostate cancer in the UK each year, having received either inadequate treatment or were beyond curative intervention at the time of diagnosis. Furthermore, a massive European study has shown that testing a man’s PSA can reduce the chance of dying from prostate cancer by around 20 per cent or more.

So what strategies should we follow? As it turns out, more specialists try to direct men with prostate cancer to active monitoring, which is intense observation, when there is enough doubt that surgery or radiotherapy is needed.

This tactic avoids “overtreatment” but hopefully keeps the window still open for successful surgery or radiotherapy if the need becomes obvious. Furthermore, the treatments themselves have become less toxic. Big incisions have been replaced with keyhole incisions, and, computers assist surgeons in the most difficult steps – so called “robotic prostatectomy” or “da Vinci Prostatectomy.”

Small incisions and computer assistance have reduced the time in hospital and allowed men to return to work, leisure and other activities in much shorter periods. Thus, technical and strategic innovations in both diagnosis and treatment have meant that the number of men overtreated or suffering from the problems associated with treatment is probably much less than before.

Being diagnosed with cancer is devastating, there’s nothing like the impact of those three little words, “you have cancer.” I know this only too well as a 10-year survivor and as someone whose Mom, Dad, Aunts and Grandpa have battled with the disease.

At the time of my diagnosis I was shell shocked, as most of us are. I was even more confused by the variety of treatment choices offered me. Decisions about a lumpectomy or mastectomy, a TRAM flap or silicone or saline implants were all part of this challenging time.

While I’m a big proponent of having choice, after all, it is our body, it was one of the few times in my life where I would have loved to have passed off the decisions to someone else. But that wasn’t an option and so I made my own decision, after lots of reading and interviewing.

While no one had an issue with my choices, this isn’t always the case. I had a friend who chose alternative cancer treatments, to many of her friends dismay. My own Mom, after two brutual rounds of chemotherapy announced that she was done regardless of what her oncologist said. Her decision was incredibly upsetting to me, but as someone who had just gone through her own cancer journey, I felt strongly that the decision around her cancer treatment was hers to make.

In situations like these, what are the steps you should take to help the cancer patient through their treatment journey? The following nine tips will help you navigate this challenging time.

1. Realize that it’s not your treatment decision, no matter how invested you may be. The responsibility for their cancer treatment is theirs and only theirs to make.

2. Be open to expressing but not determined to have your opinion heard. It’s the cancer patient’s right to ask you for your opinion if they want it, not your right to offer unsolicited advice. Remember how you feel when people give you unsolicited advice when you don’t ask for it.

3. Acknowledge your own fears. It’s hard to be impartial if you’re fearful yourself. Determine whether the cancer patient is open to hearing your fears, or whether you need to go somewhere else to talk with someone who’s less involved and removed a degree or two.

4. Don’t feel bad if you’re not up to being the patient’s sounding board. It’s not uncommon for patients’ families and loved ones to be triggered by the cancer diagnosis and consequently emotionally unavailable to help. If you can’t provide the support needed, get the name of a therapist who can and refer your loved one to her.

5. If you feel like you can handle discussing their treatment options, ask if they would like help with the decision-making process. Alternatively, ask what other information they need and if you can get it for them.

6. If they are open to it and you’re available emotionally, review the pros and cons of the treatments being considered. Treatments are like medication, they have pros and cons, and side effects.

7. Trust their judgment. The patient is a better expert on their body and on themselves than others will ever be. Although you might not understand their reasoning, remember the old saying about not being able to judge someone until you walk a mile in their shoes.

8. Know that there’s power in having a patient choose their treatment. Studies on placebos prove that by choosing a treatment, the efficacy of the treatment increases in the patient’s mind, which is the place where all true healing really begins.

9. Whatever their choice, support them to the max. Your opposing their choices will undermine their chances of recovery by instilling doubts or fears about their plan of attack.

Letting the patient decide how much input you have into their cancer treatment is a supreme act of love, and often challenging to do. But by doing so you acknowledge their competence and a true understanding that these decisions are the cancer survivor’s to make. And some day others might do the same for you when you’re facing a major decision.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of death from cancer amongst men in the USA. The most common being lung cancer. Over twenty seven thousand men are estimated to die from cancer of the prostate annually.

The good news is that research has shown that a diet which has a high Omega 3 fatty acid content can reduce the potential for getting prostate cancer and reduce the effects of cancer of the prostate. The research focused on the amount of oily or fatty fish in the diet of the men studied. The conclusion of the studies was that men who ate more fatty fish were less likely to be affected by prostate cancer. It was also concluded that where cancer of the prostate was diagnosed the growth rate of the prostate tumor could be reduced by increasing the amount of Omega 3 fats in the diet.

Diet is all important when it comes to preventing or treating prostate cancer. Increasing the amount of Omega 3 fats in the diet can reduce the risk of death by cancer of the prostate and allow a man diagnosed with prostate cancer to live with the tumor to a normal life span.

Omega 3 fatty acids are known as essential fatty acids because they are required for healthy body functioning. However they must be provided in the diet because the human body cannot manufacture them itself. Cold water oily fish are the most common source of Omega 3 fats. These include fish such as sardines, tuna and salmon which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

It is important to balance the ratio of Omega 3 fatty acids against Omega 6 fatty acids. This ratio should be as near to one to one as possible. The diet of most western men is in excess of twenty to one as a result of the large amount of meat and low amount of fish eaten. This is one of the important factors affecting the statistics for prostate cancer and cancer of the prostate deaths in western and eastern men. Western men being more likely to be affected by prostate cancer and die of this disease.

Genetics also plays an important role in the tendency to develop cancer of the prostate. Men with a variant of the COX-2 gene are known to have a higher likelihood of developing cancer of the prostate than other men. This variant of the COX-2 gene is passed from generation to generation among men. This susceptibility to cancer of the prostate caused by genetics can be positively affected by diet. An improved diet can have a positive outcome for these men.

By increasing the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet the genetic cancer risk can be reduced. Men with the COX-2 variant can change their prostate outlook by changing their diet. They have a choice of eating more fatty fish or adding an Omega 3 fish oil supplement to their diet.

Men prone to prostate cancer would be those who benefit most by changing or improving their diet by increasing their consumption of Omega 3 fatty acids. However all men should consider the importance of Omega 3 fats in their diet.

Men over the age of sixty are also more likely to develop cancer of the prostate and should consider dietary changes. Changing their diet to increase the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids can prevent the development of prostate tumors and has been shown to slow the development of existing prostate tumors. Men diagnosed with prostate tumors have been able to control the further growth of the tumor and live out a normal life span.

Fatty fish or Omega 3 fish oil supplements can be used to increase the Omega 3 fats in the diet and thus have a positive benefit for the prostate.

Omega 3 fish oil supplements are rich in the required Omega 3 fatty acids and are an excellent alternative to fish. Produced from raw fish oil using a process called molecular distillation Omega 3 fish oil capsules are not only rich in the essential Omega 3 fatty acids but also free of the contaminants such as mercury and heavy metals that are often present in fish.

Omega 3 fish oil capsules are concentrated, pure and an easy to take alternative for fish.

Take action today to prevent or reduce your risk from prostate cancer by increasing your daily intake of Omega 3 fats. Use an Omega 3 fish oil supplement to boost your bodies ability to fight this deadly cancer and live a longer happier life.

Squamous cell carcinoma is now occupying the second most common type of skin cancer. And because many people are afflicted with this disease, there is a need for more options on treatment for squamous cell carcinoma.

In the United States alone, there are already 250,000 people afflicted with this disease. It can affect virtually anyone, but this is especially common to fair skinned people and those who are always exposed to the sun. It can affect middle aged people to elderly people.

The cancer starts at the epithelium or the outer layer of the skin. In some cases, the bad cells can develop from lesions commonly called solar, clinically known as actinic keratosis. These cells can spread to the rest of the body so an early treatment is of utmost importance.

It usually starts as a scaly patch in the skin that is reddish and elevated in appearance. They can be found in the areas commonly exposed to the sun such as the face, arms, scalp, hands and ears. You should get suspicious when a lesion that suddenly erupts is difficult to heal.

The ultraviolet rays of the sun can trigger the development of these cancer components. Those who sunburn easily are more prone to this disease. Other factors that can contribute to this disease are smoking, chronic ulcer of the skin, ingestion of chemicals such as arsenic, and exposure to toxic oils.

If this disease is not treated immediately, it can destroy pretty much every tissue that surrounds the part of the tumor and can lead to the loss of nose and ear tissues. Those that appear on the lips can spread even to the lymph nodes and other vital organs which can then lead to death.

If lesions suddenly appear after a prolonged exposure to sun and this lesion do not heal and it grows considerably, you should go to your dermatologist to have it examined. The medical treatment for squamous cell carcinoma depends on the size and location of the tumor.

Surgical procedures can be utilized to remove the part that causes the cancer. It can also be treated using laser surgery, radiation therapy or cryosurgery which is a method that uses liquid nitrogen.

Alternative treatment for squamous cell carcinoma can also be utilized. Vitamins E and C can be taken to protect our dermis from the harmful effects of the sun. These are natural antioxidants that can be a preventive measure to this disease.

There are also particular herbal remedies that can help. Hawthorn, bilberry, ginkgo biloba and turmeric contain hefty amounts of antioxidants and nutrients such as beta carotene, zinc and selenium. Experts have studied that use of these herbal remedies and the reports are positive.

Benign means non-cancerous. Many things, including prostate cancer and prostatitis can cause an enlarged prostate. This factsheet is just about enlarged prostate caused by BPH.
The prostate is a gland that produces the liquid part of semen (the fluid produced when you ejaculate). It’s about the size of a walnut and lies at the base of your bladder.

The front of your prostate surrounds your urethra – the tube that carries urine from your bladder and out through your penis. Any change in the size or shape of your prostate can narrow this tube, making it difficult for you to pass urine.

If you have BPH, a rapid growth in the cells in your prostate can lead to growth of your prostate gland. Not all men with BPH will develop an enlarged prostate.

Symptoms of enlarged prostate can include:
1. A weak or slow urinary stream
2. A feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
3. Difficulty starting urination
4. Frequent urination
5. Urgency to urinate
6. Getting up frequently at night to urinate
7. A urinary stream that starts and stops
8. Straining to urinate
9. Continued dribbling of urine
10. Returning to urinate again minutes after finishing

Complications of benign enlarged prostate
In some men, enlarged prostate can lead to more serious problems, such as the following.

Urinary retention. This means you are unable to urinate at all. If this develops suddenly (acute urinary retention) and you have pain in your lower abdomen (tummy), seek urgent medical attention. If it develops gradually (chronic urinary retention), you may start to develop symptoms such as a swollen abdomen and passing urine involuntarily, for example in your sleep. Urinary retention can be treated in hospital by inserting a thin tube (catheter) into your bladder to drain the urine.

Recurrent urinary tract infections. You may develop frequent urinary tract infections because you are unable to empty your bladder properly. See your GP if you have symptoms such as pain when passing urine, needing to urinate more often than usual, pain in your lower abdomen or cloudy urine.

Bladder stones. Bladder stones may form if you are unable to empty your bladder. You may have pain in your lower abdomen or find it painful to urinate. Bladder stones sometimes pass on their own, or you may need surgery to remove them.

Treatment
The choice of a treatment is based on the severity of your symptoms, the extent to which they affect your daily life, and the presence of any other medical conditions. Treatment options include “watchful waiting,” lifestyle changes, medication, or surgery.

//-->

If you are over 60, you are more likely to have symptoms. But many men with an enlarged prostate have only minor symptoms. Self-care steps are often enough to make you feel better.
If you have BPH, you should have a yearly exam to monitor the progression of your symptoms and determine if any changes in treatment are necessary.

SELF-CARE
For mild symptoms:
1. Urinate when you first get the urge. Also, go to the bathroom when you have the chance, even if you don’t feel a need to urinate.
2. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, especially after dinner.
3. Don’t drink a lot of fluid all at once. Spread out fluids throughout the day. Avoid drinking fluids within 2 hours of bedtime.
4. Try NOT to take over-the-counter cold and sinus medications that contain decongestants or antihistamines. These medications can increase BPH symptoms.
5. Keep warm and exercise regularly. Cold weather and lack of physical activity may worsen symptoms.
6. Learn and perform Kegel exercises (pelvic strengthening exercises).
7. Reduce stress. Nervousness and tension can lead to more frequent urination.

Breast cancer metastasis causes nearly 90% of the lethality among breast cancer patients. In clinical, the progress of the disease for most patients with breast cancer will appear spread or metastasis of cancer. Main metastatic sites, including lung, pleura, liver, brain and bones. Prevention and control treatment of breast cancer metastasis is very important.

Breast cancer metastasis is a complicated process driven by multiple genes and follows multiple steps. The regulation of metastasis-associated genes is the molecular basis for metastasis. Combined with immune therapy and traditional Chinese medicine can effectively treat breast cancer, and also prevent of cancer metastasis.

Breast cancer often metastasis to the lung or pleura. There is No obvious symptoms of early. Appears obvious symptoms such as chest pain, dry cough, hemoptysis, and pleural effusion in advanced. When the tumor cells metastasis to the bone. Damage periosteum or form pathological fracture can produce severe pain. Breast cancer bone shifts the formation rate is 65%~75% zuo comes the phosphoric acid is one of main treatment medicines, on clinical obtained the widespread application. Bone metastasis is the most frequently in breast cancer. To diagnose and treat bone metastasis in time, is very important to improve quality of life and prolong the survival time of patients. The widespread use of adjuvant systemic therapy by Chinese medicine and immune therapy, to some extent, contributes to the steady fall in the mortality of early breast cancer patients over recent years. The combined treatment for immune therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, chemotherapy and radiotherapy has a strong compensatory. it can effectively treat breast cancer. This treatment not only kill the residual cancer cells but also to prevent metastasis and recurrence. at the sametime chinese medicine can enhance the body’s immune system, Inhibit and kill cancer cells. With the development of immunologic techniques and molecular biology, biological treatment especially the active immune treatment offers a new way to prevent and to cure breast cancer.

A pathology report may state that the cancer of the breast cells examined negative for oestrogen receptors (ER-), progesterone receptors (PR-), and HER2 (HER2-). Testing negative for those three means cancer is triple-negative.

These negative results imply that the development from the cancer isn’t based on the the body’s hormones oestrogen and progesterone, nor by the existence of a lot of HER2 receptors. Therefore, triple-negative cancer of the breast doesn’t react to hormonal therapy (for example tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors) or treatments that concentrate on HER2 receptors, for example Herceptin (chemical title: trastuzumab). However, other medications may be used to treat triple-negative cancer of the breast.

About 10-20% of breast cancer ?a several from every 10 ?a are discovered to be triple-negative. For doctors and scientists, there’s intense curiosity about finding new medicines that may treat this type of cancer of the breast. Early studies want to discover whether certain medicines can hinder the processes that create triple-negative cancer of the breast to develop.

Patients with triple-negative cancer of the breast, among the toughest subtypes to deal with, could have a unique biomarker that will make them receive more specific therapy, based on data presented in the 4th AACR Worldwide Conference on Molecular Diagnostics in Cancer Therapeutic Development.

Triple-negative breast cancer are breast cancer which have examined negative for oestrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and HER2. Due to this biology, these cancer don’t react to endocrine treatments or trastuzumab.

“In other subsets of cancer of the breast, you should use these drugs with a few success. However, triple-negative breast cancer presently lack therapeutic targets and therefore are handled with conventional chemotherapy,” stated Agnieszka K. Witkiewicz, M.D., an connect professor of pathology at Thomas Jefferson College Hospital in Philadelphia.

Witkiewicz examined 97 patients with triple-negative cancer of the breast, who 73 were whitened and 24 were African-American. Blood insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) protein expression was examined by immunohistochemistry and IGF-1R gene copy number was evaluated by chromogenic in situ hybridization.

They discovered that IGF-1R was overexpressed in a quarter of the instances. The IGF-1R protein overexpression correlated with gene amplification.

Furthermore, low expression from the receptor was connected with and the higher chances of lymph node metastasis and high expression demonstrated borderline connection to lower tumor size. Among patients more youthful than 55 years, IGF-1R overexpression was connected with longer survival.

Since IGF-1R blockade is a effective therapeutic approach in sarcomas, Witkiewicz recommended there might be possibility to target this receptor within this cancer of the breast subtype too.

“For the time being, we all know that it’s there and that we know it’s a marker of better prognosis,” stated Witkiewicz. “The next thing is to understand if triple-negative cancer of the breast patients take advantage of focusing on IGF-1R.” More about breast cancer rehabilitation information, women breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer treatment.
