The statistics for the various number of health related disease has been rising in the recent years, ranging from heart attack to diabetes. Colon cancer is among the high ranking killer that is of major concern to many.

What is colon and colon cancer, how can you protect yourself against that.

Colon refers to the lower part of the intestine. For colon cancer to develop from early stage to last stage “malignant”, usually it would take up to 10 years. Early stages detection, would enabled the problem to be effectively treated and preventing it from developing into full blown cancer. Unfortunately, no or minimal symptoms is shown during that early stages.

In order to safeguard yourself, there are different steps you can adopt.

1. Lifestyle and diet pattern adjustment

Studies have shown obese individuals diet that consists of high energy or high in calories, is more vulnerable to colon cancer. Just in Canada, statistics shows that 10 per cent of colon cancer patients were obese.

Advice: Eat a healthy, low fat diet. More fruits and vegetables; drink enough water especially. Fibres are found to have a protective effect (likes cereal and grain).

Avoid: Smoking and alcohol

2. Go for regular screening; either “faecal Occult Blood Test” or “Colonoscopy”

The recommended age to go for regular test is 45 to 50 years. However if you have a positive family history, then it is best to go for more thorough screening.

3. Take up regular exercise

Exercise regularly at least 2 – 3 times a week, will kept one fit and healthy against developing any chronic degenerative diseases, not just colon cancer. Try cycling, kickboxing, yoga or gym etc…

While we cannot predict what is going to happen to us, we can however do things to prevent it from happen. There is a saying “Prevention is better than Cure”. Be aware of our own body and you can certainly protect your colon.
